Scotts Manual Reel Push Mower Unboxing and Review - No Gas or Electric Required!

- We finally bought a manual push mower. With rising gas prices and economic uncertainty, it is important to acquire some "old fashioned" equipment to have around just in case. In this video we will be unboxing, assembling and using our new Scott's brand 18" 5 blade reel mower. It is similar to many other common push mower's available for purchase. We bought ours from Rural King locally, but you can get the same one, but labeled as a slightly larger 20" version from Amazon here amzn.to/3aq5zWg (Paid Link).

Worked better than expected for me. All the kids in the neighborhood wanted to use it to cut my grass
The one I used in the 1960's was cast iron with a wooden handle.
Me too! Made a lot of pocket change cutting Seniors lawns in the neighborhood. Now I’m the Senior.

I actually have years of past experience with one you younger folks would call antique today. Personally, I think the older models are better than the new more modern ones.
One thing not mentioned ... The manual push mower actually 'scissor cuts' the grass where power mowers do more ripping as they cut. Which tends to be much healthier for the grass and will also leave a cleaner look.
Yup. Lots of forward and back push step back a little and push when higher and thicker. In 80 I was 8 years old and made 2.50 a lawn. I'm San Antonio. Mainly fescue weeds in very dry grass. Easy enough. And yes I tried the model under this one called the elite. Omg. The old blue one I had in 80 was an antique then. I wish I kept it. The bearings were really good and I oiled them up. Also had neighbor sharpen the blades for me.
Healthier for the grass? So you all are grass experts and know what’s healthy for grass? Hahaha.
@@sO_RoNerY turns out when you shred something with a dull blade it heals slower than a sharp one.
@@sO_RoNerYSure is. That’s why Major League Baseball fields and golf course fairways are all cut with reel blades.
I found one at the Goodwill for 20 dollars and I love it.
I got the 18" Remington one with a bagger. Highly recommend! Love it!

Canola oil or any cooking oil is better for the environment for spraying down the blades. You can get a spray bottle @ any dollar store. I was raised on these mowers, I’m 65 & that’s what is use. It releases stress & breaks a 😓 😂

Good video but I can assure you if we ever get to the point where there is no gas available to us the last thing I think I would worry about is mowing my lawn

I'm looking to get one as a renter of a house to maintain myself when occasionally without the expense of investing in something more expensive.
You can flip the handle from using to mow to picking up the wheels and push it rather than carry it. From mowing position flip the handle lift the back wheels and push.

No need to walk backwards. At the end of a pass tip the handle over and it will be in transport mode to push anywhere without cutting.
Brings back memories of childhood. BTW. Pulling it backwards is wasted effort.
I love the idea of the lever to adjust height. Good video to demonstrate cutting. I think I will get the Lawn Master however.
I just bought one of these from Amazon, have a bunch of dried up weeds and don't want to mess with the trimmer
You can use 3in one oil and a rag to coat the reels and bed knife.

For a a bunch of college kids this is a cheap option to mow our lawns
While everyone else is out burning the world down when the gas runs out….. my boy gonna have the freshest yard on the block
It only cuts 50 -75 of the grass and leaves it looking very raggedy . This will only work for a perfect lawn with fine textured grass and it will not cut any weeds or coarse textured grass. That was my experience and I tried it many times.i don't know if it's because I needed to adjust the blades but I bought it new
You should be able to just flip the handle over and reverse the blade direction and roll right gravel or driveway???
How did it do on the hill?
I am super interested in seeing how it performs on a steep hill and if it won't slide as badly.
Why bother? Would you take a gas mower down a hill? Will you be safe? Do you think you’ll fall?
It’s best when using a reel mower on a hill to go along the hill sideways or down the hill. If you go up the hill it will stop and be hard to push
That grass was way too high and wet to be cut with a manual reel mower!!! Good call with the leaf blower though.
Wow I was gonna say the exact opposite. Why is cutting a yard that looks like it was just cut.😂
I prefer a Reel Mower. But, it work best on shorter grass.
I used one of the push mowers back in 1966- 69 then moved and we got a gas mower.

No and not even a blade sharpener!
Takes some time to get to know how to use one, gotta put your back into it more and move with purpose! dont walk with it like its gas lawn mower
It’s impossible to walk with it like a gas mower.
If you're in a situation where you cannot get gasoline, you are not going to be needing to mow the lawn.
It only worked for you because you have a perfect lawn without weeds or any coarse textured grasses

The blades. Also after each use wet the blades slightly with wd40!
These mower should only be used on low cut manicured lawns. My grass was cut under 1 inch with my regular mower and I only use these to get the golf course look

Does this work on Tall grass?
Not very well. It would only be good for maintaining a lawn that needs regular trims. Long grass tends to clog it up faster than it can process it
You’d have to go over it several times.

You have to trim it down a bit first with a strimmer, then go over it with the mower.
Problems with Manual Push Mowers, HARD TO PUSH!, A Twig Will Stop Them, Have to Go over Taller Grass 5, 8, 10 times or more in some cases and that is only with 6" Tall Grass..
Only downside to a reel mower is you need to mow every 2 or 3 days.
Rather do this 3 times a week than going to boring gym 😅
I hate going to get gas and oil and all that shit and my yard is small, this should work hopefully

It performs terribly. Will not cut coarse textured grass or weeds in the lawn and leaves a raggedy incomplete look. Will only cut grass in a ideal small lawn under ideal conditions

It is better. Can’t always have a lawn you can be happy about. Unless you want to pay for him to have such thing.
Plenty of people have a lawn just like his and highly appreciate the review on a lawn they have, not a golf course lawn. That way they can see just how it would work on their "not perfect lawn". Get it ?

Yes I bought one and tried it many times and it was a total disappointment and waste of money.i used it to cut my mom's lawn and she complained how bad it looked
