Dave, I do remember Susan Dey! And no, I did not know she did not actually play the keyboard! I would be willing to to teach her to play if she still wants to because i love playing. What an amazing true story you have told today, Dave! Susan is truly an amazing person!
Glad you did this one. She really did captivate me as a young kid in the 70's. Along with Shirley Jones, they brought a generation of fans to appreciate them as beautiful, charismatic and capable of making us believe they could do anything. Susan was a star even beyond tv and movies. Very few make it from teen idol to maturing star and far fewer establish their vast knowledge in city council or civic duties. Really happy for her.
She was a good actress and I think after Cassidy published his screw and tell book, she handled it beautifully by not dealing with him anymore. He probably hurt her very badly.
Back in the day she was right up there in my mind along side Angela Cartwright, Barbara Eden, Barbara Feldon, and Dawn Wells. (I watched a LOT of 60s reruns as a kid.)
When I hear about the Partridge Family, the song I Think I Love You always comes to mind....and with that I recall when the song was new. A school friend bought the 45 record for that hit song right away, and shortly thereafter her family's home was burgled. My friend was outraged: the burglar left the record player behind but he stole the 45. Still makes me laugh today.
What a great show TPF was. I doubt that I missed a single episode as a kid growing up in the early '70's. And like most 8 to 12 year old boys, I had a crush on Susan. How could you not?!
Any memories I have of Susan Dey take me back to The Partridge Family; simply because she makes me think of my childhood/to this day/and forever crush, the one and only, Shirley Jones. Be still my heart. Yeah, I was that one kid who had more the hots for Shirley than Susan. Dave, if you haven't yet profiled Shirley I hope to see your input someday.
I wasn't a huge Partridge Family fan, but my brothers were, so I'd watch whenever they had it on. Anyone remember when Susan was the guest host on Saturday Night Live? They did a skit on the Battle of the bands: Partridge Family versus the Brady Kids. HahA! Hilarious! Thanks for posting, Dave!
Susan Dey and Harry Hamlin are my favorite romantic couple in television history. Her performance on LA Law was phenomenal and unforgettable. She is brilliant, talented, and unique. I have been deeply touched by her emotional reach.
I remember when she did the MTV video awards with David Cassidy. That was major league because Susan had done her best to distance herself from the partridge family at that point and to finally embrace those days was major league to fans
I have to admit that I still listen to Partridge Family songs. Even have an album. One of these days I need to watch the show again. It was one of the big ones of my youth.
Still love the Partridge Family, still have all of their LPs and still listen to their music. Awesome songs.. I grew up watching them every Friday night @8:30pm. Loved watching Susan and David together. One of the first TV movies I saw of her was "Cage Without a Key." I hope she gets a good role where we can all see her again.
I watched the entire run on The Partridge Family. I really liked that show. Seeing her each week was a big motivator. She was so damn cute and wholesome! It was those eyes. I’m glad she is still going strong.
I had a huge crush on Susan Dey from the Partridge Family as a 70s kid. Yes I was a 1970s kid born on December 15th, 1966. I sure love go back to the 70's again at least that era made sense compared to so called today. I miss those Saturday morning cartoons, happy days, drive in theaters, science fiction movies, psychedelic songs/clothes of the early 70s, disco, etc. I can watch it on you tube videos.
After "Partridge Family" ended, Susan had a series called "Loves Me, Loves Me Not." It was really cute- as was she- and I remember being quite saddened when it was cancelled.
Susan Dey played on Terror On the Beach in 1973 as the daughter of the impeccable legendary master of all acting the still untouched perfection of all time best actor Dennis Weaver. Lord of all that was known as the made for television horror suspense movie of the week. No one could capture the fine art of being completely exhausted by traumatic Terror than Dennis Weaver, he was PTSD onscreen before people were calling it PTSD
I always thought she got the part on The Partridge Family because she resembled Michelle Phillips of The Mamas & The Papas. The show itself was based on the real-life family band The Cowsills.
The film something about Mary when Cameron diaz comes off the stairs on her prom dress is very reminiscent and similar with Susan day's movie 1st love...that scene is a scene stealler...from 1st love.
Thanks Dave! Yup! Susan Dey (Along with Maurine McCormick, and Eve Plumb from, "The Brady Bunch") was one of my childhood crushes! She was the quintessential ,"Girl next door"! I was scandalized when she starred in the TV movie, "Cage Without a Key"! Remember that one?
I remember watching The Partridge Family in syndication in the 80's in my childhood. The intro theme, the colorful tour bus, Susan Dey herself, all worth it👍.
Nice tribute to a beautiful woman, inside and out. Thanks, Dave. Btw had never heard the connection between ONJ and Susan (Grease & Patridge Family) That blew my mind and my wife, Sandy's (LOL) mind, too.
I watched Partridge Family but not all that much. I loved the intro the best and would often just watch that. There was a move she did after Partridge that really stuck with me, if she was trying to get out of being typecast from her Laurie Partridge role that was certainly the way to do it playing an abusive mother in Mary Jane Harper Cried Last Night. That movie was really sad but sadly still relevant today (even tho the writing and acting could be better). The shows mentioned in the title and that movie is what I really associate Susan Dey with.
Considering trends in Hollywood over the past ten years, I'd say that "It would have to be a very good role," is another way of saying, "It'll never happen."
Another excellent, but excellent post, Dave. The Partridge Family was really an interesting show. As a kid, I never caught that some of the humor could run more toward the adults in the audience. There were some clever little quips from time to time about sex appeal Danny understood, but the younger kids didn't. Sometimes, there could be a fair amount of drama in an episode without it being melodramatic. I always felt The Partridge Family was a great family show geared toward the adults in the audience. One thing I really thought made the show stand out was that Lori had definite feelings and opinions about the Women's Movement and feminism. Rather than a gimmick that ran a couple of episodes, the writers seemed to keep this mind in more than a few episodes throughout the series' run. I liked that Lori stood for something. She was beautiful (oh my goodness she stole my heart EVERY Friday night when I was a kid!) but she wasn't about to play the helpless lass who was waiting for a hero to save the day. Lori was not about fluff, she came across as a very real person on the show. Susan Dey played the part SO well it made me see her as that person in real life. So happy to see what Susan Dey is doing now. Thanks Dave!
On the drawing at 3.17 what is with the phallic symbol on Susan Dey's shoulder in the fingering action on the other side of the drawing. Didn't they think we would notice.
You're making something out of nothing, MrArcelton. I took a black and white photo and ran it through a "sketch" filter on my image program. Nothing more happened. There was no intentional insertion of a phallic symbol...which, truthfully, I still can't see.
WOW, Someone else seen looker too! I loved the tech on that movie, especially the light gun. Susan was a plus too. The scanner part should be released in 4k.
Though she might not have been as well known as Susan Dey, do you know whatever happened to Lisa Gerritsen (William Windom's character's daughter on "My World and Welcome to It" and Bess Lindstrom on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and "Phyllis")??
I have heard some surprising stories about actors who learned how to play piano in preparation for a part in a movie. According to the comments on the dvd of "La la Land", Ryan Gosling had no prior experience with the piano but he practiced intensely with a coach for 2 hrs a day for 2 months --and he does all his own playing in the movie. Michael Keaton says he learned how to play the piano for the scene in the bar with Linda Cardellini in "The Founder." Today, if Susan wanted to learn piano she wouldn't need a teacher because there are thousands of piano tutorials and lessons on you tube, some of which are given by highly regarded pianists.
The Partridge Family was based on the Cowsills that the show was originally to star. The Cowsills could all professionally play instruments, sing and had hit records. The producers didn't want the Cowsills mother who had a radio face to be in the show. The dad told them to take a hike. So the rest is history. Only Cassidy and Jones could sing. The bands real music was played by the Wrecking Crew, a group of studio musicians. Cassidy's line about Susan being seen as a sister and too wholesome for him was all telling about his tastes.....big boobs and loose. Susan was the girl next door that you marry after test driving all the others.
debora bump lost respect for Cassidy. What he could have said was I’m not worthy of a girl with Susan Dey’s quality’s but I’m honored to work with her. Positively his loss. At 64yrs young I always had a crush on Susan. Thankfully I’m married to a woman with Susan’s quality’s for 40yrs now and I’m always telling her what a lucky guy I am with two great sons n daughter-in-laws.
She graduated from Fox Lane High School in Mt. Kisco NY. She made a guest appearance there once..It was a total celebrity hoot. Hundreds of cars and no place to park.😳
I watched The Partridge Family. But , honestly, I didn’t watch for Susan Dey, I was mainly interested in Danny Bonaduce’s character. He was so funny. He invited Susan to go with him and his family for a day at the beach. Danny noticed something was wrong with Susan. Susan was getting thinner and he thought that she had a disorder of some kind. He gave her a hamburger and told to eat something. She had a look that was truly unique. I loved Looker. It was a film that showed a few advertising secrets and they are still in use today. Susan was in a television movie in which she played a young mother who abuses her daughter. I and my sister saw this twice on tv. Her performance in that film was chilling. I didn’t watch L.A. Law. But I couldn’t deny that it was a good legal drama and it was a star maker for Susan Dey, Corbin Bernstein and the rest of the cast in that show. I am sure glad that she is happy where she is. I am sure that she might return to acting if a role appealed to her; even if it is in the theater. Perhaps, she could direct an independent film.
Susan has been a favorite for years. I don't know what Cassidy's issue was. I think she's perfect! Dave, good taste with Looker. I loved that movie too!
@@jdsundstrom Looker is like a cult classic. Oddly, few people ever saw it, and it never got much TV airplay. Do you recognize the similarities to the MiB Neuralizer? You just know one of the MiB writers was a Looker fan! I may have to scrounge for a copy to watch again! Lol! Thanks for the memories! We, being practically the same age have very similar tastes, though being a latchkey kid, I was also responsible for the "parental supervision", of which I did a fairly respectable job. Usually. 🤐
I used to rush home from university on Monday evenings to get home in time to watch "LA Law" - one of my all time favorite shows. I have heard of "The Partridge Family" but never actually saw it. I remember her character Grace and Michael Kuzak (Harry Hamlin) were the 'hot couple' on that show.
@@jdsundstrom I remember watching Ms.Jones for the first time in a motion picture entitled "A Ticklish Affair" then that same year she appeared in a made for television movie on N.B.C. entitled "Silent Night, Lonely Night". You can watch that latter movie on TH-cam.
I gotta admit, I liked Shirley, too! I liked Laurie, but Shirley didn't take a back seat to anyone! It actually gave me TWO reasons to watch the show! :)
I have a Simplicity dress pattern from the early 70s that was popular in part because Susan Dey was the model on the cover. I was really upset when the envelope got torn.
Some of David Cassidy's comments in the book cost him Susan's friendship. David was a nice guy usually but he should've checked with Susan as to how to discuss his "relationship" with her. Back to Susan, she was also in a short lived comedy Loves Me Loves Me Not, about a couple that loved each other but was constantly fighting.
Lots of information I was unaware of especially the part about Olivia Newton John. Susan was a good actress but by all accounts she’s an even better person. 👍
I watched The Partridge Family; but, never got a chance to see L.A. Law. I read something a long time ago, before there was the world wide web and home computers, that The Partridge Family was loosely based upon or inspired by a real life singing family called The Cowsills, which was started by four brothers who wanted to be America's answer to The Beatles. The Cowsills even had their own TV special and were approached to do a TV series about a singing family. That didn't happen. We got The Partridge Family instead. I think the Cowsills would have done well with the TV format. It could have been the first reality TV show. The Cowsills disbanded in the early 70s; but, most of them didn't really leave the music industry. I've just lost track of them from about 1978 or 79 on. The Cowsills had a lot of good songs. One of my favorites was Indian Lake. I did not know that David Cassidy wasn't doing his own singing on The Partridge Family. He can sing. So can Shirley Jones. Was it a money thing? Would they have to be paid more if they did their own singing?
I heard the same thing about The Cowsills. However, I don't think they were as photogenic. Regarding David's singing, it was only the very first pilot episode where it wasn't his voice.
wasnt she also in a shortlived tv series Emerald Point starring Dennis Weaver ? i remember it about a Naval Officer with three daughters. Susan played the eldest named Celia. is memory playing me false?
Another good choice Mr. Dave! I was hooked on Susan Dey every time I looked into her eyes!! I always thought she had "sexy eyes"!!!(Dr. Hook) I can't blame David Cassidy or Barry Williams, for being attracted to their "sisters"! I can understand why Susan didn't participate in The Partridge Family reunions. I think David and Danny said some pretty harsh things about her!
My mom had at least one of the sewing patterns that Susan Dey had modeled for! As far as roles I wish she would have played - when Pamela Sue Martin left Dynasty after a few seasons I really felt like Susan could have been a way better recast as Fallon than Emma Samms was but she was already well committed to LA Law at the time!
Susan Dey's husband, Bernie Sofronski, is from the same small city in which I was raised. We lived three blocks from each other, got our first jobs at the same radio station, he was a news and sports announcer, and occasional disc jockey. (albeit some twenty years apart) Bernie never forgot his roots, and always tried to help those from his hometown find work, and more importantly, "satisfaction - in the broadcasting and entertainment industries." I've heard that they sometimes visited a farm, during the late '80s/early '90s - which is not very far from that radio station, and that Susan and her daughter are truly nice people in real life. Of course, every red-blooded male from those parts is damn jealous of Bernie's "catching" a stone cold fox like Susan Dey... Where did I go wrong??
I liked Susan Dey both in The Partridge Family and LA Law. That said, I believe she should have been much more accommodating when asked to appear on reunion specials or talk shows with other members of The Partridge Family cast over the years. From what other cast members have said, Susan would have absolutely nothing to do with her fans from the series or with her former cast members after the show ended. Although I'm sure she had her reasons, I think she should remember that had she not been cast in The Partridge Family and become so well known to the public from that show she probably would not have had an opportunity to go on and do the very popular LA Law.
She did an excellent job playing a troubled and abusive mother in, "Mary Jane Harper Cried Last Night". A real tear-jerker. Natasha Ryan who was her co-star in that movie, and in Sybil, just dropped off the grid.
Hearing the wherefores of the actors being hired to play musicians whilst having no musical ability reminds me of the story of The Monkees. Ahhh...Susan certainly made my Dey.
I liked it when Susan Dey appeared as Laurie Partridge. Because girls and women from that time period had long hair. Because in those days it was in fashion and they looked absolutely beautiful. Because women with very short hair or their heads shaven don't turn me on. You'd think that David Cassidy and Susan Dey would be a good couple. Once your perspective mate tells you they only see you as friend or brother. They're basically telling you, it ain't happening. You're not relationship material to them as sad as that goes. But Susan Dey took everything in stride and moved on and became successful. I'll always tip my hat off to her.
Dave, I do remember Susan Dey! And no, I did not know she did not actually play the keyboard! I would be willing to to teach her to play if she still wants to because i love playing. What an amazing true story you have told today, Dave! Susan is truly an amazing person!

Bonaduce was...and is very funny!
My favorite episode is when Reuben is dressed up like a fairy , with a wand and all and pictures are taken of him.
I was surprised to see Danny Bonaduce in an episode of CHiPs , he played a wisecracking bully.
@@jdsundstrom He was certainly a talented young kid that complemented the show.
@@philt1771 Agreed!
Susan has been a favorite for years. I don't know what Cassidy's issue was. I think she's perfect!
Dave, good taste with Looker. I loved that movie too!
Thanks Mike!
Usually. 🤐
Around here, every day is Susan Dey. Dey-o!
i loved the comeback kid. you didn't mention love and war with jay thomas.
I remember her as Grace Van Owen in LA Law in the '80's.
Fine actor.
Awesome informational educational video experience Y'alls God Bless Ya Prayers
Glad you enjoyed it, Steven!
I watched "The Partridge Family" for the mom, Shirley Jones, over the daughter.
Loved her in "The Music Man"!
I'll check it out!
I gotta admit, I liked Shirley, too! I liked Laurie, but Shirley didn't take a back seat to anyone! It actually gave me TWO reasons to watch the show! :)
I watched "The Partridge Family" for David Cassidy, over any other characters. ;p
I have a Simplicity dress pattern from the early 70s that was popular in part because Susan Dey was the model on the cover. I was really upset when the envelope got torn.
She's lovely! She was a great Jo March in a tv version of Little Women (1978). Liked John Ritter too.
Hey Dave, do you know who played Laurie Partridge in the pilot for a proposed re-boot? She's pretty popular nowadays.
No clue, Kevin. Who?
@@jdsundstrom Emma Stone
Regarding David's singing, it was only the very first pilot episode where it wasn't his voice.
wasnt she also in a shortlived tv series Emerald Point starring Dennis Weaver
?
i remember it about a Naval Officer with three daughters. Susan played the eldest named Celia. is memory playing me false?
Remember her voice work in Partridge Family 2200?
I think she only voiced her character for a couple of episodes of that cartoon.
If you look up "Adorable" in the dictionary you should see a photo of "Lori Partridge"! Yes, Dave she had IT ALL!
Well said, Jeff!
Surround yourself with people who bring you joy.
@@jdsundstrom That's a good philosophy to practice!
LOVED her! So cute!
Indeed!
Susan Dey's husband, Bernie Sofronski, is from the same small city in which I was raised. We lived three blocks from each other, got our first jobs at the same radio station, he was a news and sports announcer, and occasional disc jockey. (albeit some twenty years apart)
Bernie never forgot his roots, and always tried to help those from his hometown find work, and more importantly, "satisfaction - in the broadcasting and entertainment industries." I've heard that they sometimes visited a farm, during the late '80s/early '90s - which is not very far from that radio station, and that Susan and her daughter are truly nice people in real life.
Of course, every red-blooded male from those parts is damn jealous of Bernie's "catching" a stone cold fox like Susan Dey... Where did I go wrong??
Not enough (Do)ugh-Re-Mi?
@@philt1771 Yeah, you've got that right!
Hey Dave, I like that movie Susan Dey did with William Katt. Have you seen it and what do you think of the movie?
Are you talking about "First Love"? I haven't seen that one.
I fell in love with her back sometime 👍💕
You're not alone, Christopher!
Dave Sundstrom really? I’m not surprised 👍💕
She did an excellent job playing a troubled and abusive mother in, "Mary Jane Harper Cried Last Night". A real tear-jerker. Natasha Ryan who was her co-star in that movie, and in Sybil, just dropped off the grid.
im surprised you didn't mention a great movie she was in called echo park with tom hulce definitely worth watching. damn dave 97.5 subs?! awesome!!!
You're right, Jose. That is a great movie!
Hearing the wherefores of the actors being hired to play musicians whilst having no musical ability reminds me of the story of The Monkees.
Ahhh...Susan certainly made my Dey.
Nice pun!
From that era of television, I think I had crushes on:
Susan Dey
Lori Saunders
Linda Kaye Henning
Tuesday Weld
Tina Louise
Yvonne Craig
That's a pretty awesome list, bkktd!
I had crushes on Tuesday and Lori Saunders. I met Yvonne Craig and Lori Saunders. Got their autographs too.
@@hungryjerk7872 You are a man of many autographs, Tom!
I thought i was replying to bxktd. My bad
Henning and Dey for sure. I was a MaryAnn guy.
Is she still alive in December 24 ?
I thought I was the only one who loves Looker!!
Nope!
Awesome 👍🏾 she was awesome 👍🏾😻
I loved her in LA Law and The Comeback Kid
