Principle of least privilege and network segmentation: my chromecast, wifi speakers, etc are on a different network from my fileshare server, my work PCs, my data processing and analysis set-up, etc. I have a non-administrative account on every device possible that can sudo up to administrator if it has to.
These two principles are incredibly important on business networks but can be applied to home networks as well. If you have an old XP desktop that runs spotify to three different chromecasts in your house... why does it have local admin rights and why is it connected to all of your important things?
Great video btw Grant! Love it!

One thing I do, granted I am a cybersecurity student, is I use a Network level Firewall. I have a pfSense box setup and I use VLAN's to lock down my networks. While this is a little more advanced than using something like the Trend Mico Home Network Security device or the Bitdefender Box it can still be set up relatively easily with a little googling and TH-cam searching.

    • @collinsinfosec

Hi Grant, I am Italian and here these products are not found but I would be really curious to install one in my home network. In my home network I have implemented a Raspberry Pi with the pi-hole service. This slightly improves network security and most importantly it blocks most of the advertisements online. I recommend it to everyone because it costs very little and works really well.

The device you recommending is just doing arp poisoning do basically redirect all traffic to that trendnet device, heck some antivirus / firewalls will detect that arp poisoning as malicious and its not like iot devices can be secured that way, they can still be hacked if those devices where insecured in the first place regardless how strong the password you put on it, after all these device usually have backdoors or security holes.

This is amazing!! Ive been looking for something like this for my home nextwork and also to use for learning purposes for my studies. Ive been studying cyber security for almost 2 years and i am very passionate about sharing info with the less informed about the dangers of bringing iot into our homes. That is actually one of my big motivations to getting into cyber sec. is to help bring that information to the general public who may not understand the importance of security implementation with our devices. That and those parents who let there kids get babysat by youtubes wonderful algorithm.
Thank you for taking the time to make these videos.

Nice video. The state of IOT devices today is that they ship with ineffective security measures in place. So much so that most security professionals take the stance that they won't allow these devices on their home networks. I see this as a problem because if these pros are taking the stance that they won't touch them, how will the average person learn how to secure them. I see this becoming a bigger problem before it gets better.

Hey Colin! Great video and awesome quality. Always enjoy watching your videos. I don't particularly agree with your thoughts behind child being talked to by hackers through ring. Rings infrastructure itself is very safe, safer than most IoT devices which are barely supported. The hack was possible due to customers reusing previously exposed credentials. But that said I do agree that ring could implement app level authorization and requiring authorization via email per new device.

Wow thanks for the reply! Techcrunch has a good article regarding the attack that happened on December. There is always conflict between accessibility and security from a B2C companies. Finding that balance in a shared responsibility model between allowing customer to be secured vs securing for the customer. There is definitely areas of improvement that IoT providers need to improve, including Ring. Thanks for taking the time to read my comment Grant!
