    lol we've been collecting egg cartons for 6yr now!! we give our customers a deal if they return cartons so I don't ever run out :). we don't wash unless absolutely necessary and never put in fridge. our Country is the only or one of the only country that presses to refrigerate eggs, in Europe, eggs are kept next to bread at the grocery stores. I believe it keeps them more fresh.

    The best decision I ever made was buying 2 one week old chicks in March 2016, without the consent of my spouse. LOL At first she was "Da hell did you buy?! You know I"m scared of chickens!!!! You know I don't like them!!!!". Shrugged it off and raised them inside of our house, in a guinea pig cage under a heat lamp etc, with the help of our Jack Russell (substitute mother, not kidding you) and they very quickly became pets that loved cuddles and attention. And now, 1,5 year and some later they are our sweet cuddling adult chickens that provide us with food every day. 2 big eggs every day, which is plenty enough for us. We even have to give away eggs from time to time. LOL She loves them to death now and would do anything to prevent any harm being done to them. They basically became HER pets too that even respond to their names individually (Thelma and Louise).
    Cheers.

    We have 12 chickens, now a year old. We get 7-11 eggs a day. When we have our weekly floods-5 inches of rain a day, the egg production goes down. We also don't wash our eggs because of the coating. I usually have 16 doz eggs in the fridge at one time. Then I start giving them away to our church family. Older eggs boil better, so that is why I wait till I have quite a few dozen before I give them away. Raising chickens is a great hobby, since all my kids are grown. Love your videos and always look forward to the Bible verse at the end.

    sslfamilydad I just want to say thank you and your family for all the great videos. You have inspired me to build our very own chicken coop. Last fall I started the coop 😰. It's easier said than done. Anyway last April we purchased seven two day old chicks. Two Road Island Reds, one Americana , one Silver laced wyndot, one Golden laced wyndot, one Buff Orbington, and a Barred Plymouth Rock. Four of them just started to lay on August 31st. My family and I thank you and your family for all your help. God bless.

    I’ve always been funny about eating laid eggs. I grew up city with the idea of refrigeration so eating an egg that’s been out possibly all night in a coop is a paranoia. Buuuuut your video helped ease my mind more so thanks for that. I subbed because I can’t wait to see what else is on your channel.

      Fresh eggs are FANTASTIC! We bought four chickens in April and the difference between store bought and fresh eggs is night and day. Also natural and not shot up with hormones and other chemicals. We don't refrigerate our eggs and they're great. Did you know that store bought eggs are already a couple of months old before they ever get put on the shelves? Hope this helps. Blessings!

      Honestly there are a lot of things that fall under that same realm. A lot of "common knowledge" about a number of products like eggs are based on giant corporations protecting themselves legally. Reality is often quite different. It's like how quite a number of groceries last long beyond the "best buy" or "expiration" dates.

    Question! We just received 3 dozen farm fresh eggs. Not washed. My immediate instinct was to put them in the fridge. They've been in there a little over a week due to my concerns of washing. Before cooking them and washing, do I need to let them return to room temp? Or can I take the ones out and wash/cook right away as needed? If I want to wash them all.... can I wash them all and put them right back. Haha you get where I'm going with this. Thanks! Great video!

    Washing an egg removes the bloom and the egg should be refrigerated. You should also note that eggs should be washed in mildly warm water, cold water can cause egg to bring bacteria into the egg.

    Quick question. I really want to keep my eggs at room temp i just feel like it is more natural. I get very high quality eggs straight from the farm unwashed. However, It is very cold on east coast and they are sent to me basically refrigerated because of these low temps outside. Can I leave them at room temp even after they were previously cold?

    • @SSLFamilyDad
      @SSLFamilyDad  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would say they are fine. Ours are often left in the coop for a day or two when the temps are in the 30s and we always bring them in to room temps till they are used with no trouble

  • @fgbowen

    I need to keep 4 eggs at room temperature = 2 for a day, and 2 for 2 days - I will be able to keep them cold & separated as well. Will they remain safe under these circumstances?

  • @jmeneely
    @jmeneely 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should consider adding that the water temperature of the wash water cannot be colder than the inside of the egg or the inside will contract and draw in dirt, bacteria and wash water through the egg shell where it will stay and spoil your eggs. You always want the wash water to be 3 to 5 degrees warmer than the egg. Don't know how warm your eggs are? Get one of those laser thermometers.

  • @tosundance
    @tosundance 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have chickens, and have a question about keeping them at room temperature. It seems that the ones that are at room temp, when opened, spread out through the whole pan. The albumen is not raised , which I thought was the test of a fresh egg. I also do not wash them until I use them. Have you noticed this or know what that is?

    • @SSLFamilyDad
      @SSLFamilyDad  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      tosundance I do notice that sometimes they are less rigid when kept at room temperature. I have a feeling this is just due to the temp they are at the time you crack them. for instance, if you left an egg out for a week and then refrigerate it, it will be more rigid when you crack it.

    Great vids and keep them coming!! quick little point though... For the love of your cast iron pans, don't use metal utensils!!! Its hard on the surface and wears the seasoning of the pan:(

    • @SSLFamilyDad
      @SSLFamilyDad  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Gibby Outdoors Oh I would highly disagree with you on that. One of the best reasons to get cast iron is so that you can use good utensils. Cast iron is meant to be used with stainless steel and I would be dishonoring it by using plastic:) The seasoning on cast iron should be in the "pores" of the pans and not on the surface. Just a different opinion and I appreciate yours as well!

      I learned in another video that if the eggs float, they're no good. If the sink but tip up a bit you should boil them or bake with them. I would think that your fridge might be a source of heat and may shorten the shelf life but that's only my hunch. I would find a cooler spot to keep them.

      SSLFamilyDad Eggs in the UK are not kept in the refrigerated food section when sold in supermarkets etc. They are pretty resilient things! The other thing you can do is wash them and then wipe them over with a mineral oil which will then act as the natural "Bloom" coating, and they will last for a long while like that too. Storing them in an egg carton pointy end down keeps the air sack at the top this also helps keep them fresher for longer.

    You should try to get a rooster and see if it will fertilize the eggs so that you get baby chicks.

    How do you do a vid like this informing people on safe handling when you clearly don't even understand how salmonella is spread? He says you don't have to worry about food poisoning if they are your own chickens so you know their feed etc! You can get a chick who got it from the mother so infected when you bought it (there's no signs) or they get it from mice entering their coop or run and the chickens being exposed to their poop. Unless you think you can completely block all mice out then there's a chance. He never explains to use only warm water when washing the egg (or the shell will absorb and bacteria on the surface into the egg you will eat) and why you have to use running water not standing water, nor mentions you should always wash your hands after handling unwashed eggs (or the touching the chickens and not wear your coop/run shoes in the house). I know a homesteader who almost killed a friend with her eggs not doing things safely! Her friend was hospitalised with organ failure ffs. You don't need to over clean and be paranoid but this guy just brushes off basic safety because he really doesn't understand what he speaking about...why make a video on a topic you didn't even research?

    If you have dirty eggs it means you are not cleaning the nests as often as you should, which means you aren't really taking care of your chickens as good as you should.

      @robert5900 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly, Thank You for that comment
      Another reason is people collecting them...who do not handle the eggs properly.
      Either way, if that egg gets cracked, I want it washed.
      If you would not lick it, would you want it on your counter?

      Sarah well it gets really muddy here when it rains, sometimes the hens' belly gets muddy too so when she pulls the egg under her after laying, it gets muddy too. My nest boxes are clean but that's a problem I have.

      charlie the eggs are getting washed by the hen.
      Might as well wash them after collecting to keep the cooking area clean. Jusy use them up if you worry about having washed eggs.

      I have no idea what's the right way. I'm just about to start with chickens and until today I assumed a kitchen rince would be fine. But why am I seeing egg washers for hundreds of dollars? What is the purpose of these? Sorry again. Am a newby.

      +Canadian Egg-Scursions generally when you are selling Eva to the public people don't want dirty eggs so you can wash them and then refrigerate them for sale. We use ours pretty quickly so just bring them in and use them off the counter as needed with no washing until just before use

      +Courtney Strobeck lol, we don't use paper towels or napkins. We have cloth napkins and fabric towels and it has been working out pretty well for about two years. Saves money on things we just use once and throw away:)

    You sure are using a bunch of water to rinse off one egg! 🤨

    • @joan-lisa-smith
      @joan-lisa-smith 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      He explains little in this, water must be warm not cold (or any germs are absorbed into the egg), it must be running water not standing because you want any salmonella to go down the sink and not coat the egg like it will if washed in standing water. He also never mentions you have to wash your hands after touching unwashed eggs. You also want to dry them with a paper towel or wash your tea towel after and not wipe them on dishes if you use it to dry them. He says you don't have to worry about food poisoning if they are your own chickens so you know their feed etc! He clearly has no clue how it's spread. You can get a chick who got it from the mother so infected when you bought it (there's no signs) or they get it from mice entering their coop or run and the chickens being exposed to their poop.
