Please put "A world without fingers." on the to do list. That is such an interesting one, I think it deserves it's own podcast.

Skeleton keys did exist, basically used as a master key. They were for whats called a warded lock, a type of lock that uses a set of obstructions to prevent the lock from opening. The key would be filed down to pass the obstructions, making it work for any lock it fit for the most part.

29:43 on 3D printing keys from pictures: keys have a few known standard depth and number of grooves that can be reproduced by key cutting tools that easily fit in a backpack or indeed a 3D printer. Pictures of keys don't even have to be that good or taken from close. Those key hooks next to entrance doors can easily be photographed, even from a few hundred meters away and produce a working key. Some keys even have their groove depth written on them, check yours, bigger the number, deeper the groove, a locksmith can cut a perfect key from those numbers alone.

It says a lot about what kind of person I am that I first thought about how internet protocols and authorization will become massively insecure because no one can use their public and private keys

Cobblers in north america are incredibly rare and work out of their houses mostly. Locksmiths do engraving and locks and keys but no shoes or trophies.

We had a cobbler in my town in Kentucky for years. He could fix shoes, but he also had this enormous sewing machine that could sew on pretty tough material. He fixed my backpack once.

The key to the city was for the door into the city back when they had a city wall.
To pass you would often need to pay a tax. And they where closed at night so noone could get in or out. Unless you had the key ...

We say "allen wrench", and to the best of my knowledge a wrench and a spanner are the same thing.😁

Skeleton key is a type of key. All lick companies create master keys and custodians use them. Skeletin keys refer to the specific type of door key used on old victorian style door locks. Its so thin it looks like a bone. I actualky own a skeleton master key. It will open these old doors on antique houses and apartments if the lock still works. If I rent such a place, I fix the locks and enjoy using my skeleton key.

We realky did leave doors unlocked. There realky was a lot less crime. Also, starter jobs had a kiveable wage and welfare was enough to keep body and soul together. Did you know welfare was initiated as crime orevention? There were too many kids stealing food and getting hung by the neck until dead and it actually got to people. I fear we may need to get that awful again before people take care of each other again. Lock your doors, the hungry poor are losing their morals
