- The Golden Rock is one of the most important Buddhist sites in Myanmar. The huge bolder, covered with golden leaf, is balancing on the edge of a rock since antiquity. Small pagoda (Kyaiktiyo Pagoda - 7 meters/24 ft) is built on top of the boulder. The site is at elevation of 1,100 metres / 3,600 ft.
In the video: views of the rock and the Buddhist pilgrims at sunrise, sunset and after dark.
Recorded February 2015 in 4K (Ultra HD) with Sony AX100. Edited with Adobe Premiere Pro CC.

Legends says that the single strand of Buddha's hair kept inside the stupa prevents the rock from falling down.

A great video of the Golden Rock, a well-known Buddhist shrine. As I recall, the stupa on top of the Golden Rock is a relatively recent addition, and I have photos of monks at the Rock before the stupa was build on top of the Rock.

Hi, all the viewers. I just wanna say one thing. Women are not allowed to stay close to the golden rock not for the reason of any discrimination. It's just traditional. There is no any enactment in our religion, Buddhism for such case. We inherited this tradition since the old ages. According to the tradition, we, men are nobler than woman because only men can be potential Buddha with many years practices. So, pls understand that this is because of tradition not because of discrimination. Thanks!

William Louis, I think anyone who wear appropriate cloths should be able to stay close to the golden rock. Lets face it, Buddha had a Mother(Maha Maya), Aunt who took care of him after mother died (Maha Pajapati), a Wife (Yasodharā) and Buddha ended Six years of self-imposed harsh and extreme asceticism by eating Sujatha's food. The only reason Buddha didn't want females to become nuns and live together with monks cause Buddha knew that our(male) mind is very uncontrollable/messed up, but later Buddha accepted females as nuns but asked them to live separate. Now we have created some shitty rules to make us feel superior which is a shame.

In fact, there is much to ponder - the first - stone of rounded shape ( the rocks was not split off), which means that he either was the alluvial deposits (which can be only the bottom of e[trimely stromg water stream), or it was artificialy developed. On the crust of rock he could not be by chance (it weighs about 750 tons), and if it had been separated himself from the cliff, it could be seen (but again its round without sharp edges). But the source from which he could break away not found! Then the stone is located in the mountains in an area of seismic activity (up 7 points) at the same time it balances and didnt fall for thousands of Years..So, not so simple ..... and another - one Burmese told me that her grandfather claims that before the stone floated in the air at a distance of 30 cm, and under him the chickens were walking, but then it slowly began to move down ... truth or not, but this is rare mysteriously....

The rock is said to b still floating to this day but the gap is now only a hair breadth or so I have read in the books.

Is it reasonably easy to travel around Myanmar?
It is reasonably easy, and very safe, people - nice and friendly. When I say easy - this is about the main tourist destinations (there are connecting local flights). For other places it might be slow. To reach the Golden Rock you travel 4-5 hours on a bus from Yangon, and then for 45 minutes on a crowded truck (with other 35 people).
