Hi Dan, loved this! My Year 9's are going to be devising using the theme of diversity, any words of wisdom on how I could get them going? I really liked your use of Salvador Dali's work for inspiration.
Hi Debra, great to hear it! With any kind of devising work I always tend to work on a continuous cycle of discussion, research and practical exploration 😃. So if the theme is Diversity, perhaps start by asking questions like...what does that mean? What does that look like? How is that reflected in our society, culture, politics, entertainment etc? From that discussion or brainstorm your year 9's could go off and research images, articles, clips, or events where diversity has been, or still is an issue. Whatever they find, you can use that material as a stimulus for getting them on their feet and exploring it practically! (Obviously depending on your school's current social distancing approach). Then repeat this process as the work grows...hope that helps?!
I have an interview coming up for a teaching position I need to teach a 40 minute lesson on structure and drama techniques to 8 year 10 students. I don't know where to start! Can you help?
Hey Mark, great news on your interview! Happy to share some thoughts - The topic of Structure and Drama Techniques is very broad for a 40min lesson, but year 10 will likely be starting to explore devising ideas. So planning something around responding to a stimulus (such as an image / poem / quote or a section of a script) might be a good place to start. Then in pairs / fours maybe give them each a different technique to use? On structure, to avoid over complicating it, half the class work out their ideas in a non-linear way (episodes) and the other half with a liner storyline? Then perform and analyse at the end. It’ll be quick work to pack that into 40mins. But I hope that helps somewhat. You can of course throw all that away if it’s no good 😉 Best of luck for the interview!
@@DramaDan That is super helpful! Thanks, I was thinking of using the Three Little Pigs as a starting point to look at linear then using a picture or poem to start a devised activity. I like your idea so I will use that, thank you!
Mark Lloyd yep that would work too and would probably be better for the age group. So long as you feel you have enough time to cover everything you need to then go for it! 😃
Thanks Nancy, following this lesson the students each selected one theme or idea from their own brainstorm that they wanted to develop further. For example, in mine it could be the 'deserted' landscape, the 'solitary' life of the boy, 'unfinished work' or perhaps even the 'impact on the environment' . They each created 5 sentences and actions based on the theme and selected a piece of music to perform to. Moving forward, a short scene was then written and performed in a live digital lesson. I hope that helps!
For my GSCE drama devised piece is so bad! My group mates are lazy and all my ideas are bad. How can we further develop the ideas we have in a non naturalistic way and make the audience care about the character and what they are going through
Dan, do you have a Twitter account or a way of connecting? Feel like you are the Drama teacher I am missing in my department! Thanks for your uploads :)
Hey Diane, ha thanks! Are you on Facebook or in any of the drama groups there? Alternatively I think I’ve just found you on Instagram...if not I’ve just requested to follow someone completely random 😂
This is fabulous. Thank you for sharing your work and creativity!!
Thanks for your feedback!
Brilliant. Thank you for sharing.
You're welcome!
you are my best teacher, thank you sir.
Very kind of you to say! Thanks 😊

This is great Dan-- where did you take it after this?
