- Aboard the International Space Station, Expedition 45 Commander Scott Kelly and Flight Engineer Kjell Lindgren of NASA took time out of their work schedule to talk to Sebastian Stan and Mackenzie Davis, cast members of the new movie “The Martian”, during a visit they made to Mission Control at the Johnson Space Center, Houston Sept. 15. They were joined by JSC Director Ellen Ochoa. Kelly is at the midway point of a year-long mission aboard the orbital laboratory with Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko of the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos), gathering valuable biomedical data that will be used in the formulation of a future human mission to Mars. Lindgren, who is a medical doctor, is beginning the third month of a five-month mission on the outpost.

I really liked this one! Them asking the astronauts personal questions more about how they feel working on the Space Station than how they do it. I'm guessing this was probably timed to give a bit more character to the idea of an Astronaut, especially with their families there, something that it seems The Martian will excel at. I love these interviews, maybe someday I'll get to ask a question!

I got so nerdily giddy every time one of them did a flip or played around with the lack of gravity! Like another commenter said, knowing it's not done with wires or some sort of movie magic is trippy, haha. When they brought up how you can get lost in the dark and end up upside down and not even realize it, I hadn't thought of that. That must be so weird and disorienting to not have a physical sense of 'up' like gravity provides.

A little known fact about the astronaut program is that most of them are useless for the first 48 hours they spend in space. Even with the training, micro-gravity is so disorienting that it makes them severely ill until they acclimate.

Does anyone else think, from his body language (lifting glasses to rub his eyes, scratching one leg with another, arms incredibly crossed) that Commander Kelly is either very uncomfortable or just incredibly tired? My heart goes out to him either way. I can't imagine being in a steel container for a year straight. Let alone one floating in an environment where even the slightest thing that might go wrong can and will kill you. Bless him. Also, Sebastian looks fantastic in this.

Soldiers HATE watching the majority of soldier movies in the field (occasionally we'll watch Black Hawk Down or the first part of Full Metal Jacket without finishing) but most refuse. Sending space movies to the space station is just cruel hahahaha!

It's kind of surprising that Interstellar wasn't given the same level of attention as the Martian.
+Bill Kerman If I had to guess, I think it's because traveling to Mars is a more attainable goal at this point in time and the planet fascinates a lot of people, including me. Plus, the movie is based on a popular book and it looks to be more light-hearted and hopeful than Interstellar is.
The movie was released around the time NASA released the discovery of evidence that water is on Mars. Plus Mars is cooler and has more appeal imo

+Rachel Bond I don't think they are really comparable, all of the science of both movies checks out (aside from going into a black hole without dying) aside from that they are pretty different in my opinion, love them both though!
What you need to understand about the Martian is that the book itself is almost 100% scientifically accurate and possible (the only thing that wouldn’t work is the potatoes, the crater where the ares mission landed has toxic soil, but literally any other location it would work) and because of its intense Accuracy it’s really really loved (the astronauts mention they’ve read the book many times). Interstellar, while theoretically interesting, doesn’t have half of the real life groundedness of the Martian. I think it comes down to the people creating each story; Andy Weir is a nerd who really understands space travel and astrophysics, he’s trying to tell a compelling story by using real science, where Christopher Nolan wasn’t interested in that, he wanted to tell a human story that compelled you to think, not gain a greater understanding of the complications of life on another planet.
It's all fun and games until the cosmonaut on the other end of the phone starts speaking in Russian: "Longing, Rusted, Seventeen, Daybreak, Furnace...."

I actually think that every cosmonaut and astronaut, taikonaut or any other naut that goes to space deserves atleast one spacewalk through their career, cuz of all the sacrifices they make doing this job.
That was a cool interview with good questions. I like that the book is respected by an actual astronaut for it's accuracy. I hope to create work that the real guys will like too.
