In the summer of 1957 my older brother Donald was reading the road map and the map seemed to say to him that we could save hours off our drive to our destination by taking this little short cut. Uh-huh. It was about 10 hour drive, actually quite sketchy in places where one or the other car would have to hug the cliff face or even back up in order to let cars go past in the other direction. One lady driving the other direction looked over at my dad as she passed very slowly, creeping by, said : Close isn't it...ha ha very nervous laugh. My dad could see that her right tire was literally on the edge no barriers, as she crept on by..in those days there were turns where your wheels would slip and your car would start to slid backwards, really not much fun as a 13 yr boy in the back seat of the nine passenger Pontiac station wagon. But what an adventure ! It of course became part of my book report when I returned back to school. Oh, and I guess this drive occurred on my birthday, had forgotten that. In my oral report, I tried to wax poetically about the possible correlation of my Birthday, and my death day looked like for awhile it might be the same day. Being a passenger on the Titanic is not as much fun as being the Captain of the vessel.

That is beautiful. Colorado is my favorite state. I was at Cripple Creek last year which is why the scenery in this video looks familiar. Hope all is well. Hello from TX

Drove it in a rental car ha ha...Made the mistake of going back to Cripple Creek on the Shelf Road to the west... you get half way and suddenly signs recommend 4x . We made it but would have been better to go back on Phantom Canyon Rd beautiful area!

Could a full size truck fit through that mountain pass?

I drove a VW van through there about 40-years ago. There were places that were downright scary! Looks like the road has been improved a little since then.
Gold Camp Road was/is another interesting drive.
    Nice video.

went through on this 20 years ago and scared the wife and kids going over a curved bridge with no side rails. What happened to it ?

That is a beautiful ride. How did you find it? I noticed the " By WAY " sign. Is it on line?

I met a new friend and we went 4 wheeling just outside of Canyon City for several hours up to inspiration point. (Video coming soon of that experience) and I looked on the map to see what was around. I saw the road name "phantom canyon road" and decided to drive that road back north to the Denver area. Didn't know it was a dirt road or anything, just figured it looked remote and since it had the name Canyon in it that it would be worth checking out. Glad I did! 30 miles of driving, albeit slow, of amazing views. Although most of Colorado is a scenic drive!

I have not looked the area up online but it is a public lands area. You can bring a tent out there and camp, all that fun stuff.

@@wurthitadventures Hey Thanks for all of the good ideas. I do a lot of camping and prefer
to stay out of crowded campgrounds. I remember watching one of your first videos. You took a
small car to an old deserted ghost town in NV I think. Keep up the good work! I turned the notifications back on ;-)
Cant wait to see the 4 wheelin vid. Take care & thanks again!
