When I have a student who is first learning how to start IV's I will have them drill this over and over in the back of the ambulance. By the end of one shift you will be a pro at this.

Question: I have a port, for supplemental weekly IV fluids. I have POTS, and issues malabsorption. Is it my local fire department’s policy, to not use my port, and attempt to get a peripheral IV? Or is that standard protocol across the industry? I have issue, with my connective tissues(sorry for the pun-y Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome joke), and so I am a frequent flyer, with both rescue & the ER. Everyone struggles to get IVs started, or at least used to, until I got my first port, five years ago. I am almost always accessed, and I never request being accessed in an ambulance or similar hard to sterilize place.

Most policy’s is that we are not allowed to use a patients port. Especially if you have one straight to the heart, the only circumstance we would ever use one is if indicated by base contact during a cardiac arrest but since we all do IOs it doesn’t really happen. At least that’s my county. I know it’s inconvenient but policies are written in blood, it’s for your safety!
