As a 76 year old, I can say this is the greatest American film ever made. A bold statement (with a pinch of hyperbole) but the movie meant that much to me back in 1969. I saw it in Baltimore while I was a soldier at Fort Holabird - knowing I would soon be sent to Vietnam. This movie with its innovative soundtrack blew me away. Jack's performance was spellbinding and he stole the film. Directed by Dennis Hopper who was a (troubled) genius. This film spoke for a whole generation - just as Dylan's music did. A profound movie on so many levels. Absolutely love it and still listen to the soundtrack on CD at least once a week. RIP Peter & Dennis
You made THE seminal movie of the 60s. For that, we should all eternally grateful.

I went to the movie with my mom she had no babysitter now I have a HARLEY and live the life . The best Biker film made it cost $400,000 to make and made $60 million in 1969 no one in Hollywood could do that today. At least Jack Nicholson is still alive although he seems to be pretty well retired from the movie business. Getting old sucks and I'm not so sure that it is better than the alternative.

The movie is pretty tame by 2018 standards. 3 easy going non violent MC boys. At the time in 1969, this movie was a RADICAL wild lifestyle. Average 'hippie ' was an unwashed person who smoked a little 'gunja' & was pretty mellow. Some did hard drugs. They were rebelling against mainstream lives. Many adapted. Some did not. became burned out old hippies.

    • @burkeofmellowpark3472

It was free sex, free lifestyle, free food, & freedom from 'mainstream ' lives.Young, carefree no responsibilities but THAT does not put food on the table. A lifestyle in 'moderation' is best for many.. those that adapted somewhat into responsible lives did OK into older age. Those that did not adapt became burned out & destitute.

Hi I'm Jack Nicholson, I'm the same guy in every movie. They say I'm a great actor.

One of my favorite movie scenes of all time. The 2 who gave this a thumbs down should be shotgunned like Captain America.

Could some explain the reference? Indians? DH Lawrence? Pardon my ignorance ...

DH Lawrence was a famous author.Apparently he liked whiskey. All throughout American history there was the stereotypical meme that native tribes loved alcohol and got drunk easily.

I can't be arsed to look for the original film - but i'm sure there's a cut here: doesn't george offer captain america a swig of his 'indians' after billy has his? and captain america turns it down? with a really sweet and apologetic smile?
please help if you know different...

maybe in the italian version they choose Hemingway because at that time he was more known by the big audience, and more linked to alchool than Lawrence
