  • The gnarliest thing about Mavericks isn't the technical drop or the force of a 50 foot wave breaking behind you, it's surviving the wipeout. Professional big-wave surfer, Shawn Dollar, sat down with The Surf Channel and shared his mindset when surfing Half Moon Bay. His thought process is, you can't think what can wrong but what can't go wrong.
    Shawn Dollar fight for his life in one of the craziest wipeout stories you will ever hear.

    Damn that air tank is crucial, so is the floatation wetsuits. Imagine surfing technology is the next decade. Pretty exciting, do you guys think more people will try big wave surfing with new advancements? Sure no matter what advancements, they would still need to be good surfers and be in great shape.

    I know a dude that grew up surfing Mavericks. He wiped out one time, got held down and washed into the rocks. He went out two weeks later and got the shakes so bad that he had to go in. He never surfed Mavericks again.

    He's a true God to surf something like that. But I do kinda find it funny he said he's more stoked to get back on land than the waves.
    Makes it sound like he goes to Mavericks just so he can touch land again with his feet afterwards haha. Not a compelling reason to paddle put to Mavericks, but hey, to each their own

    Don't know how many of the people making comments in this section know who this guy is. Over a decade ago this guy paddled into the biggest wave anyone had ever successfully caught at the time - in cold water no less. Shawn Dollar is a total animal, and for him to almost drown using supplemental oxygen... that's way beyond what I'd ever expect to survive.

    Lesson here is always have enough energy to get back in. I've almost drowned a couple of times and it was always when I had nothing left but the waves were too good to get out.

      Where? At the local beach where the waves are 3-5ft? Lol you would never know what’s it’s like to surf these kind of waves that can kill you. I don’t either but I’m not making comments like yours….

    Creepy music to add drama. I didn’t even know people used air tanks when surfing only issue I could see is people relying on them who aren’t properly trained to handle those conditions.

    People ask me...which is more dangerous - surfing or ice climbing? Let's see...drowning or falling. Surfing has "moving" variables. Ice is fixed. A "mistake" in either can lead to injury. With ice-it is usually death.

    • @evab.6240
      @evab.6240 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      rahkin rah Yes but if you fall off ice - you made a mistake. When you're surfing, it's not even necessary to make a mistake, you know. You could did everything right but the wave would have a weird bump or something at it could just flip you around.

      I ice climbing and I’m terrified of surfing. Most people ice climb on belay. If you fall you will get caught by a rope.

      There’s two small air tanks. In the back of the suit. Well only if you’re surfing waves in the craziest places. Like in Portugal. Surfing Nazaré, you need them.

      Yes similar to what military pilots carry, very small can attach fairly easy to anywhere on your body. They give you about 5 min of air time. Aka HEED. For when they hit the water and need some air to escape.
