  • Even while we spend more of our days staring at screens and do more of our shopping on Amazon, book sales are actually rising at independent bookstores. Here's how Brooklyn shop 'Books Are Magic' is making it work.

    I know of a small bookstore in Holland, Michigan that was around when I was a child in the 1960's and it is still thriving. The recession a few years ago closed a larger book store in a nearby mall, but it didn't touch the little store in downtown Holland, which is now doing better than the mall. It shows that people still like shopping for books in the middle of an old fashioned friendly small town!

      Its probably a niche bookstore with rarer books than the big one. Just a guess.

      As long as they don't get hit with a 72% rent increase...: It's what is killing a lot of them... The trick with bookstores is not to depend on car traffic: This is something you want to WALK to easily from doing something else... You do not specifically drive to a bookstore. That kind of walkable real estate is getting scarcer and more expensive, usually because exotic restaurants can pull in more margins... Bookstores should absolutely get a pass and subsidies by the government for the contribution they bring relative to a restaurant... See my description of the phenomenon here: th-cam.com/video/kkXBmXOrGzk/w-d-xo.html

      Maybe they own the buidling. That is a large part of the cost.

      We've come full circle in many cities: the malls and big chain book stores are going defunct & indie book stores have a chance again (if they can successfully with Amazon).

    The only books I buy at Amazon are the free e-books that they offer from time to time. Other than that, I love visiting my local used book stores. There are 6 of them within a 10-20 minute driving distance from where I live. And all the funding goes back to the libraries in the area.
    I've found some great gems at them too. I got most of the Wheel of Time series in hardback 1st ed 1st print for 30 bucks.

    How can they possibly be profitabl e? Commercial rent in NYC is insane and they sell a low margin, low turnover product. Yet they are "thriving," whatever that might mean.

      @@flimsifer Not at all. All I asked was how they could be profitable. But they must be, since they've added a second location since this video appeared three years ago. Good luck to them.

    • @RamRammyRam
      @RamRammyRam ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LoLo-ue5xe Even people who are interested in books don't usually collect physical copies. I say that if every reader here can afford books, then book businesses would surely thrive. Bookstores targets a niche market after all and that market sadly can't afford to continue that collecting lifestyle.

      @@RamRammyRam im not sure about that my friend. Torrent has been around a long time for digital copies.
      When I travel to other countries like new zealand (very small population) and thailand (not an english speaking country), bookstores seem to still do well. Maybe theyve taken a hit, but theyre not closing right and left or scaling down substantially like what is happening to bookstores in the ph.
