This is the first part of a multi-part project to look at bits of the Battle of Britain, and this one is really just scene setting. It's also the first video since Lazerpig was good enough to shout me out on his channel
A few important notes
1. I do not use the word Nuclear at all during the video, so hopefully those who are triggered by how I say it can watch in safety
2. I insult no one’s favourite flying machine. That’s coming up next time.

@@MostlyPennyCat Oh, absolutely. Had Sealion put Nazi jackboots on the south coast, we'd most likely have made Viet Nam for Americans look like a relative success.
They were a great asset later, with both Pluto and Fido being extremely useful to war effectiveness.
There is an interesting phenomenon on TH-cam, in which I'll find a youtuber talking about something I have an interest in but limited knowledge about in an entertaining manner, follow them, watch a few of their videos, enjoy them, absorb the information. And then they get onto a subject I do know about, and it turns out they are talking bollocks - and everything they have previously said comes into question. This has happened enough that I tend to be very trepidatious with new (especially history) TH-camrs.
Being married to an academic RAF historian, working for the RAF, and having an amateur interest in the RAF's history myself, I can safely say you have cleared that hurdle; really excited to see how this series and the channel as a whole progresses!

As a modern civilian airline aviation geek, I can totally sympathise with this. First it was because I was learning independently. Then it was because I got a job as ground crew (aircraft harder while they’re on the ground) which gave me access to real pilots and engineers to learn from.
And then I became the girlfriend of an airline pilot and after that my education really accelerated. Safe to say that it really annoys me when I see TH-camrs peddling myths that aren’t true.
Hitler had ONE chance to win the war. Halifax is chosen instead of Churchill and he seeks terms. As long as Britain stays in the war, Germany loses.
I can’t wait for this series. Half tempted to get in on the action, shitting on Lee Mallory and Goering is a hobby of mine.

Makes sense. The British staying in the war forces him to keep forces deployed over there in France and Africa rather than committing all out to Barbarosa. Combined with Lend Lease, and and his stupid decision to then declare war on the U.S. when he didn't have to... and well... (insert Sad Trumbone noises here)
@@andrewgause6971The declaration of war on the US doesn’t actually matter that much here, because Roosevelt was certainly already looking for any and all ways to convince the house and/or the senate to agree on such a war anyway. All a more “diplomatic” approach would have done is slightly delay their entry into the war until some uboat did something extraordinarily stupid (again) or until some guy in the senate ate a bad sandwich and decided “THAT’S IT! I’M MAD NOW! TIME TO GO TO GERMANY!”.

It was a rather specific subset of your forefathers that I'm upset with - and I'd like to stress it's that generation, over which you had no control. In the same way my forebears started the Atlantic slave trade, and we should be cross with them for it but neither you nor I did those things, we can't change them, all we can do is learn and hope to stop it repeating.

That line and clip made me laugh out loud at the office. I grew up watching flappy gunport shots. Sent the vid to my brother he said he laughed as well.
You can say what you want about Churchill, but he did something no other leader has done in recent history to my knowledge. He served as First Lord of the Admiralty at the start off WWI, and was apparently damned good at the job, but he was responsible for the Dardanelles disaster and was demoted. He resigned, joined the Royal Scots Fusiliers and served in the trenches on the Western Front. How many people would go from such lofty heights to the trenches by choice? He never forgot the Dardanelles and always deferred to his senior staff in WW2, although probably with much bad language involved.

Excellent... My mother was in the ATS and 'manned' (!) AA gun sites in Crystal Palace during The Blitz. She worked on the early radar identifying target, so in a huge irony she actually more real combat action than my father who served in the 8th Army in North Africa, but in 'supplies'. It would be nice if you gave the tiniest of nods to the women who served in the ATS as the Government never did award a campaign star medal for the 'Home Front'. Excellent work, looking forward to the next part.

@@milgeekmedia there was a high powered name-blaming meeting with Galland and Goering: Goering was getting a bit testy as to why hadn't his German Eagles snuffed out old blighty yet, was there anything Galland needed to hit 'em out of the park? Gallands sarcy response was "a squadron of Spitfires". Goering was not amused, the meeting did not improve interdepartmental relations, nor did it improve the luftwaffes chances of having bitters at the White Horse pub before closing time.

This was a fight for the country's existence. It is irrelevant how justly or unjustly military commanders were treated; it only matters whether the decisions they made were right. Were they?

As an American who’s never heard the details of these battles beyond their dates; I simply can’t wait to see your overview style content regarding how the politics and other historical factors play into it. It’s a real blessing that I have no preconceptions to alter or have to work around.
Just love the commentary on your videos. I have to say as someone who has studied WWII, Churchill, for all his faults, was the man Britain and the empire needed at the time. Thank God he was there.
Its sad that the empire allowed Germany to not be partitioned, to rearm and ignore French reparations. And France (that is half the size of "greater Germany") just followed with German appeasement politics scared that Britain might turn its back on France. Britain needed people like Churchill in 1918. Churchill getting power as late as 1940 is in a way shameful for Britain.

Found your channel via the Blackburn Buccaneer video, and now discover that your mixture of profanity, pathos and knowledge has been directed at possible the finest chapter of British military history.
Having grown up in Kent, I have been throughly steeped in the tales of the Battle of Britain so I am looking forward to watching the rest of the series and your take on what is an often over mythicised passage of the Second World War (cue Elgar or indeed Lark Ascending!).
Having read a lot of the history around the battle, I can confirm that Leigh-Mallory was a complete and utter c**t, and should have been sent to the Tower for being said c**t. But as Dowding was Scottish and Park was a Kiwi, he probably thought he could get away with the grade A shithousery.
Anyway, off to watch parts 2, 3 and 4, so jolly good show, chocks away and other such cliches that were never said… and keep up the good work, my lord.
Throw in as much stock footage of Hurricane gunports blazing off as you like, I'll never get bored of watching hurricanes let rip on the Luftwaffe. That's a cliche that doesn't get old.

Hi @HardThrasher the Pig sent me lol - you forgot about operation Ariel which rescued many more British soldiers, equipment, tanks, personnel and civilians etc from many other french ports but we still left a shit load of stuff behind for the Germs. Btw I like this video and your personality 😀

Adolph Galland's book is particularly fun. When he's blitzing across the continent in massed, surprise attacks against stunned opponents he's jack the lad. When his shit gets pushed in over Britain and then they're pushed back and mercilessly bombed he's not quite so chipper and really has it in for people who overwhelm their opponents.
The bits where he claims both that the bombing was devastating and unstoppable but also that his pilots couldn't miss and also took the bombers out...
I've not read Galland's book. Presumably at some point he claims he disliked Hitler, knew nothing about the Holocaust and was only following orders anyway?
Probably didn't help when he lost two brothers shot down & killed, that must have brought things home to him to.

This is probably the first time I've heard an English-speaking source speak with respect for French men-at-arms. And only the second or third time that I've come across mention of the contribution of the French rearguard action in enabling the miracle of Dunkirk. Thank you.
Churchill was a 'newspaper man' as well as soldier & politician, a complex character.
And actually a very good writer. As he said "History will be kind to me - for I will write it." And after WW2 he did - of course leaving out his errors. A man who did many stupid things in a long career that weakened his country and got a lot of people killed, but our host is correct. He got it dead right in the 30s and early 40s.
Writing this 11 months after it's introduction that my father was USAF from 50's - 80's your video about the 8th AF brough me here. You knowledge filled in blanks that had existed since I was a boy sitting at the knee of the men who flew for the 8th and 15th US Air Forces. I thought that was a hard thing to do, but your introduction at the beginning of this video answered the question for I have always (and read most) of the German Glorification documents. I always found it funny that Adolf Gallant seem to be always shoot holes in the agreed upon knowledge. So I'm very intrigued at Lord HardThrasher's take.

As an ex Australian soldier (21 years) , I'll never forgive Churchil for Galipoli, and much as I dislike all politicians, will always appreciate our Prime minister during WW2 (John Curtin) for keeping as much Australian forces as he could around Australia the Pacific and South East Asia against the Japanese and not used as cannon fodder in campaigns important to his Britain and Empire.
He wasn't a saint, he wasn't the best... he was just the perfectly arrogant pig headed leader that Britain needed at that time.

Looks like this will shape up to a good series.
I remember reading (It was a long time ago so my source is hazy so feel free to fact check me) that in the event of the RAF losing and Germany sending an invasion force across the Channel, the Royal Navy's Home Fleet could afford to go on a death ride down the coast, through the invasion fleet. Even if it lost every single battleship, it would still have been considered a win, simply due to the sheer carnage it could accomplish.
and because the germans only have 1 shot at their invasion. If that fails they cant try again
But then how would the Brits have combatted the U boat threat with half their fleet sunk in the straits of Dover?
@@edenbreckhouse Battleships didn't hunt U boats and there were other fleets available, with smaller ships more suited to convoy duty coming online.
@@edenbreckhouse The shallow waters of the straits of Dover are not a good place for U boats to operate, and a destroyer doing 30 knots at night is not a very good target. When considering how the Germans would fare defending an invasion against the RN, just look at how well they did trying to stop the evacuation from Dunkirk.
@@ptonpc Although it was an airstrike from HMS Warspite that achieved the first sinking of a U boat from the air.
Imagine being dived bombed by a Swordfish float plane by the time it got low enough to drop its bomb, most of the U Boat crew had probably had a mental breakdown brought on by long term stress.

Appreciate the call out for French. WW2 was won with Soviet blood, and WW1 was won with French blood.

Yes, those over 1 million British casualties of WW1 didn't bleed at all.
@@mickmegson6241 The French suffered 6 million casualties. Their sacrifice was literally x6 greater, not to mention the damage to their economy and land because the war was fought on their soil. So yes, the British contributed greatly but the French contributed six times more.
Wars aren't won by suffering the highest casualties, it would be a truer statement to say the war was almost lost by French blood. The sheer crass stupidity of the French command, notably in the border battles of 1914, was disastrous for France. Those brave men killed in 1914, the bloodiest campaign of the war for France, died for no benefit to the national war effort. Simplistic statements like yours show an lack of understanding of how wars are actually fought and won.

You excelled at lying to the US since you owned the only communication cable at the time though so that they would intervene to save your asses and die for you. WW2 was even worse. You did not manage to win a single battle for yourselves

Worth remembering that a fair chunk of the polish navy and airforce escaped and signed up with the British. One of my local airfields was staffed almost entirely by poles for most of the war. Not just pilots, they loaded the planes with groundcrew and familys and took off. An old boy I remmber from my childhood claimed to have been tied into a bomb rack - no idea how much of that is hyperbole, but there you go.
Czechoslovaks too, in Battle of Britain there was one whole czechoslovak squadron (no. 310) and by the end of the war there were four (310-313)

I'm here because of a random Algy recommendation (well, that was 3 of your videos ago, so not technically *right* now), not no LazerPig.
Your videos are great, keep 'em coming.
In the 5-6 minute mark the comment about how an undefeated UK meant that the UK could rely on the US industrial might that doomed the Nazi's sounds plausable. However this does assume that the submarine fleet couldn't blockage the island.
Which for a while this blockage seemed like it was going to work. And if it had, the outcome would have been UK defeat.
So yes the nazi airforce defeat (can't spell luf-athingy) was a strategic failure, but could have been a different outcome.

As to the battle of Britain itself, for what it was worth, I grew up reading a journalist book on the battle of britain, that covered everything from channel convoys to interviews with the Eagle Squadron or whatever they were called (the American volunteer group) and Polish resistance airmen. Near the conclusion of the book, there was a talk with a RAF high commander (I forget his name, as I sadly lost the book in Hurricane Michael and it was a very, very old book, older even than my father), where he was explaining the RAF's approach. Namely, that the goal was, wherever possible, to destroy about 10% of the attacking luftwaffe planes. With the strategic goal being "If we can destroy ten percent every time, in time, we will destroy the entire airforce." It was portrayed, not as a plucky few standing up and winning by a stiff upper lip and jolly-good spirit, but a cold, calculating battle of attrition... rather conveniently also helped by the decision of the luftwaffe to fly their ace pilots until they died so they would have more kills for the propaganda department, rather than doing the sensible thing and turning them into trainers for the next wave of pilots to help grow the overall quality of the air force as a whole...
Make of that what you will.

If I was stationary, waiting to ambush to bad guys, and I had infinite ammo, and lots of barrels, and the state I was serving had near infinite resources then the MG42 is hard to beat. However. If I need an infantry support weapon that needs to move around, or am operating in a war time with near peers and don't have those things then it's bloody awful. Hence no one else has ever thought that weight of fire was a good idea, and all the modern versions use much easier to manufacture parts.

I am perhaps unreasonably excited for this series, just from the promise of giving Leigh-Mallory what for. I did note one minor error, the OKW was the overall military command, while the OKH was Army High Command.

After getting this channel recommended by a well known pig I decided to check out the channel before I actually subscribed to them. I went to your first video and saw it was trashing the B-17. Now I am a bit of a freedomboo but I swallowed my pride and watch it anyway. After I finished it I immediately subscribed to you because if your first video was that good, your newer ones should be even better, and I was glad to be proven right. In particular I want to say how amazing your China video series is and I’m almost done watching through your backlog.

I actually found your channel because for once, TH-cam actually recommended it based on my viewing habits. Shocking, I know. But I am a Lazerpig fan, so it makes sense.
