This is it. A-ha finally gets the theme to the new Sonic the Hedgehog game !! I love this track. I actually love the chip tune style here. i don't think it would carry a whole album so I'm glad it was used sparingly. Some great tracks still to come. Can't wait.
I lied before - this album is also not available for streaming in the US. The Cd is pretty easy to find, though, unlike Analogue. I like this track a lot!
Riding the crest written by Pal Waaktaar-Savoy and music by Magne Furuholmen and Pal Waaktaar-Savoy. The track was inspired by what Pal termed the electro-blues of Arcade Fire’s second studio album Neon Bible. Lauren, Pal’s wife said he listened to it non-stop through-out a seven hour drive to Arizona. The catchy keyboard that opened riding the wave was actually sourced from Magne’s Running out of reasons. This is the albums paciest track and is thought to be a reference to either heavy drugs at a rave or you take when your lactose intolerant like his wife Lauren is. As for what I think as I haven’t heard it for a while. It’s an okay song for me it’s not on my favourites but I don’t mind listening to it. Take care 😘❤️🇳🇴❤️🏴🇺🇸 Thankyou for spoiling us today with three tracks. Catch you on the next one.
Always thought this song was too cheesy back in 2009. After listening to it again today, I still think so. Looking forward to the next track reaction 🎶
Ahh, how I missed my daily fix of your reactions yesterday! 😆 But it is good that you don’t spoil us every day. 😉 Yes, this is the second very danceable songs on the album, but things are going to slow down. It is also the second song written mainly by Paul but incorporating a riff by Magne which he had already used in his solo album (A Dot of Black... 2008). They said that they had gone back to their old way of working to some extent, and there are a few Paul and Magne "collaborations" in this album, instead of the way they had been doing things lately, writing and recording their own songs separately and hardly ever even meeting (which I guess is one of the reasons the earlier 2000s albums miss something, they're too much like collections of Paul's / Magne's/ Morten's songs and less "a-ha"). But most of the songs are still penned by Paul alone. When you were talking about the meaning of "riding the crest" as the point where you start going down I suddenly thought that, coincidentally or not, that must be more or less how it felt for them with this album, when they were enjoying more commercial success than with the previous albums, but maybe already thinking of putting an end to the band (mainly Magne). It echoes a bit the name of their "Ending On a High Note" tour of the following year (riding the crest before they came down "for good", or so they thought 😉). It's just a new idea you brought to my mind and it probably isn't that interesting. 🤣 Anyway, "riding the crest" is how the sonics make you feel, and even if I don't pay much attention to the rest of the lyrics that is enough for me. An up-beat, uplifting, feel-good songs that makes you want to dance, though of course it would NOT figure anywhere in my top favourites.
Another one I really like…and probably the paciest song on the album. I don’t think there is any ambiguity about the meaning of the lyrics ..they’re quite explicit! I’ve never taken drugs but I can still understand the feeling of euphoria of partying and being on an alcohol induced high, on the “crest of a high and beautiful wave”!
"Riding the Crest" was confirmation that "Foot of the Mountain" was going to be great. You don't just put two powerhouses at the start of an album and then shrug and say whatever. It was the third song I'd heard. I watched the video for "Foot of the Mountain" and then searched for album tracks and listened in the order of the album. The rest of the album could have sucked and it would have been worth it for "The Bandstand," "Riding the Crest," and "Foot of the Mountain." Turned out the rest of the album was great. I don't know if it was intentional flattery through imitation, but a-ha could have sent "Riding the Crest" to Ivan Doroschuk of Men Without Hats with a note saying, "Just replace Morten's vocals with yours. No one will notice." Very reminiscent of the "Pop Goes the World" album and songs like "Moonbeam." Also, there is a song from 2008 called "California Blur" by Echo Jet that has a similar feel to "Riding the Crest." Completely different songs and Echo Jet is more of the four chord pop sound of the time (although I don't know if they ever actually used that particular chord progression, I'm just saying they had the sound) but there is still a tonal similarity with a guitar driven sound on that one song.
@@markwebster7435 Haha, well hey, lots of us '90s ravers are way more calm and straight-laced then we were back then, so even if that's the case, I'm on board, lol.
Even if there are good songs especially "shadowside", this album does not make me vibrate as much as the others. Maybe because the synth "doesn't taste like" 80s...!?
i know what you mean. I feel like Analogue was this way for me in the feel of the album. The first 4 tracks were great but the rest.... meh. Oh and of course "That" song i like so much. Nope.
That's how it is with a-ha! Some albums touch us more than others. We don't always know why. This is also what makes the richness of the group, each album is different 🙂
@@ahabutterfly I agree completely. My perfect album was East Of The Sun. All the others have great song that i love but not all songs. There's only a few songs that i really dislike.
@@UnhandyCandy280 Personally I like all the songs of a-ha! Just a few a little less 😉 And as I read in some comments Morten could sing me the phone book, I would still be satisfied 😂
The comments here made me think of Norway's crown princess, Mette Marit, who is known in Norway for her improper youth with rave parties and lots of fun. Presumably not the material for a queen the late King Olav would have wanted for his grandson, Crown Prince Håkon. Our current king Harald himself had to fight to be allowed to marry his beloved Sonja, so he accepted his son's choice. Good thing we Norwegians are willing to accept that a wild youth does not necessarily mean that one is an irresponsible adult. Now I can't shake the thought that Pål had Mette Marit in mind when he wrote the lyrics. 😂I like both the song and Mette Marit, just so it's clear.

My favourite band 🙃
Another a-ha song where the chorus just soars: well crafted and very catchy and does well as a follow up to the amazing opening track.
One of my favourites from this album!

yeah you heard it right, 'truly wasted at a rave'
Hahaha, oh man, the '90s nostalgia with that 2009 line.
Think it’s a-ha’s version of an anti drug song 🤣
