That was my first Indy 500! I have attended 33 of them…saw 2 of Mears’ 4 victories, and all 4 of Castroneves’. Always a thrill. Always get goose bumps when I tell of the first time I heard the announcer say “and it’s green!”. This year, I was in one of the garages for a tour, and came face to face with Simon Pagenaud.
I really enjoy watching the full broadcast WITH the commercials just like this. Really puts you into perspective of back then. Some Nostalgic commercials too.
1:40:30 Derrick Daily rolls every backmarker cliche into one interview - 'I was going as fast Mario', 'just biding my time', 'Emerson was actually holding me up.'
+Randy Dubin , that would be sweet..but like I've been saying since the end of 'The Split', what ABC really needs to bring back is Paul Page. I guess I should go Google whether or not he's retired..but I could have sworn I heard him announcing a drag race just within the last 2 or 3 years.
+Randy Dubin , aw, HELL YEAH! Video's dated 2013? Man, I should have bought a radio three years ago! Now to find a station in the ATL that is actually covering it this year. And a dirty secret: I was actually a Cheever fan when he was in F1 (yeah, I know he lived in Italy as a kid, but so did Mario & it didn't keep me for cheering for *him* ;) ). Also supported him in CART and Gp.C sportscars (I was a Jag fan). I guess I quit because he was an 'early adopter' of the Earl. But yeah. TV mute and radio on. Why not? Hell, even IMSA did it with sportscars (US video/Radio LeMans commentary) before NASCAR bought them out.
@@oldsccaguyyah9901 we all loved Cheever back in the day brother. even though he had a poncy euro accent lolol. I followed in sportscars as well. Ah the golden age of IMSA! loving the commericials on this!
thanks for this and the writing. i too am mainly a road guy but i went to the california 500 indycar race every year except last year (nascar in sunoma) and grew up with all kinds of racing (hell i go to supercross and off road truck races) i've never been to indy but would love to go. thanks for this, you'll help me kill a boring night
+Swine Brothers , glad I could help. I remembering watching those USAC monsters in the late '60s and thinking, "Hey, they're just bigger, stronger formula cars.." You can imagine how happy I was when CART added those road races to the schedule. As far as the ovals, I wish I had kept a couple of the Phoenix and Milwaukee races. I swear, on TV Phoenix looks like it has some elevation change. And the Milwaukee Mile should be on the National Register of Historic Places. Indycars raced there when AAA was still the sanctioning body.
What is the name of the song they use beginning at 2:00? Also, while that song is playing, you can hear Tom Carnegie's voice in the background on the PA. You can't understand what he is saying, but just hearing his voice in the background as the song is playing gives me chills every time I watch this.

This is great. I also enjoy the commercials. Thank you for posting it.
The vintage commercials are a nice touch and bring back memories.

The debut of the Delta Force Intro. Hope ABC brings it back this year for the 100th Running.

I miss those engine sounds. It was as much a part of Indy as anything else.

They announced Stan Fox's retirement at 1:06:28 via Carnegie. Wasn't his car the same one Snider parked as they went green in 1987?
Start and park!
