  • Vietnamese modern music (tan nhac) began with the French arrival in the early 19th century. Initial French music came through the church and then the military right after their colonization of Hanoi in 1873. The new French disseminations of popular songs were made even more popular by talking movies and ballroom dancing. Young people particularly found the new style of music attractive. Primary musical activities in Hanoi before the 1930s included traditional theatre, reformed theatre, and songs by beggars who performed near train and bus stations. By the mid-1930s, Vietnamese started to compose songs in their native language using French melodies. The lyrics usually quite different from the French versions, but it became prevailing among the people in Vietnam. Later, the Vietnamese began to write their own songs as well. It is thought that the modern Vietnamese song originated from one of these early composers, Nguyen Van Tuyen, a native student of Huế at the Philharmonic Society of Saigon, who first performed his songs there in 1937. By 1938, he was also touring in Hanoi and other cities with great reviews.
There were a number of Vietnamese composers and singers who were inspired to follow the French styles. From that on, pre-war music was developed, which is still widely listened by Vietnamese today. The form of music included marching songs, love songs as well as songs about resistance and independence from France. Generally speaking, musicians and performers in particular often held low status in Vietnamese society. Although pre-war music supposedly ended by 1946 or 1947, some songs were written as late as 1954 are still attributed to this genre. The legacy of music is that it is still heard on the stages across Vietnam and even the United States some decades later.

21:10 THIS song is exactly why I fell in love with Vietnam. The lyrics are so tragic and beautiful, yet also hopeful and forward thinking.
The message of the song roughly translates like this:
"1000 years slaves to the Chinese enemy, 100 years dominated by the west, 20 years civil war, the inheritance mother left you is a sad vietnam, a mountain of graves and a forest of bones. Teach the children to speak truthfully and to not forget their skin colour and mother hopes her children will go far and not hold on to hatred"
So basically: Don't forget your past, remember who you are, but think forward and don't hate people nowadays for what happened in the past.
    Vietnamese culture is so beautiful

This is a popular music genre in South Vietnam during the civil war (Saigon capital) and it is known to the Vietnamese as "Golden Music" or "Bolero music". After 1975 when the North and South were unified, it was banned for a long time because the victorious side called it a depraved culture. Until today, this genre of music has revived for nostalgic young people in the country and abroad.

The Northerners tried to abolish the capitalist culture of the former South Vietnam, they considered it a foreign culture, not only destroyed the works of art, but they also burned the bookstores (Khai Tri Bookstore) in Saigon, the former capital of South Vietnam, now Ho Chi Minh City. They still played these kind of songs in most of the - remaining coffee shops and bars - in HCMC/SGN in 1989/90 when I first started visiting VN. Was still pretty much a closed country - closed to tourists and the only foreigners were pretty much Russian engineers and the like. It wasn’t pre -75 - but it sure wasn’t 2022+ either. Some of the cafes had huge white parachutes to keep off the sun and rain - and the roads were still pretty much all cyclos and Honda 125s… interesting times…

I love it! I am planning to learn Vietnamese because of this playlist. I have researched about the influences of this style of music but there is a lot of versions, some say It is French influence, another ones say it is Spanish influence, but I really can feel A LOT of latino music from the same years on all of these songs, mainly Mexican and Cuban Music. I mean, the songs "Biển Tình" and "Anh Cho Em Mùa Xuân " really sounds like music that my Grand Father listened (and Me too). In the second one I even can hear the latino instruments called "Güiro" and "claves". I am Mexican by the way. Coud someone explain to me what is going on? ... Greetings from Mexico! hi! i think you're spot on about the latino music influence! my parents would refer to this genre as "nhạc Bolero", which you might recognize as the bolero from Cuba :^) i think the viet version is slower, but the similarities are definitely there! it seems to me that this music was just relaxed and peaceful, seemed to be easy to adapt to from traditional viet styles. dur the war, i think southern music begins to show influences from rumba as well.
btw it makes me very happy to hear that you're interested in learning the language

@@lewakar hi! this is due to some other political reasons. please keep in mind that my following comments are very biased.
this genre became popular in viet nam the 1930s, before the divide between north and south and is sort of considered folk people music or "nhạc vàng" (yellow music). the topics of these songs were typically love of the homeland, first loves, family life, love for friends, love for life. exploring emotions, writing poetry.
as tensions rose, more and more bolero music included lyrics about wartime struggles, loss, grief, and resistance to the communist forces. the communist regime obviously opposed this and declared that only "nhạc đỏ" (red music) was allowed in ha noi. this music was propaganda glorifying military leaders, rallying efforts toward "reunification" and decolonization from the french (who were thought to have brought bolero to the country). bolero music represented unwanted external western influence, promoting counter-revolutionary ideas and capitalism.
anyway, after the fall of sai gon in 1975, the new government officially banned the yellow music. hence, no more western music. killing the southern music industry was part of their revolution. listening to this music was punishable by law. i think the restrictions have since been much looser, some areas experiencing revival through bolero cafes and concerts and singing competitions.
hope that helps, always do your own research, and thanks for reading!

Bullshit. They are never banned. These are all legal songs. The banned songs are the pro-South Vietnamese Army songs like "Bài ca chiến thắng" or "Thề chiến thắng quân thù". The songs in this video are classic "pre-scrotum-scorched" songs that are still well-known in Vietnam.
