I have used the OS app and it was rubbish. I have been using Viewranger for some time now and It is a great app. I like the fact that you do not have to have cell coverage at all to use it, as long as you have down loaded the area map to your phone at home. Great video Trev. See you in the hills..
No worries - yeah, a shame about OS. You think they would work to make the best app there is seeing how they are all about the maps. Strange! Oh, well, cheers for watching!
Good little tutorial that. I’m a big ViewRanger fan. They’re always updating it too which I like and the icing on the cake has to be a map on my watch👍🏻👍🏻. No barbies tonight chap??
Haha! Once I have finished my editing I may allow a little tea party lol. Yeah, Viewranger is a great little app, and I enjoy using it. Still must remember to have a go at the Skyline though. Thanks for watching!
Yea, it is a shame Terry. I cant understand why they didn't just take over Viewranger as it was rather than move it over to an inferior platform. Sad really.
Great little film Trev, just what I was looking for! Will be signing up too once the lockdown is over. I've been using Stava, which is OK for tracking the route you took, elevation, and things like that, but for route planning alone this has my vote. Thanks again. Top-Notch again!
Hi Trevor, a good video which has got me interested. What I do like however, is that you seem to answer every question put to you. Some reviewers never seem to answer questions. I may give the free version a try. As an 82 year old, some of it may get too technical for me. But thanks for the intro. Terry Davis
Hi Terry, I do try to answer as many as I can, but must admit that with a rise in subscribers and comments its not always as easy. Unfortunately, recently viewranger has been purchased and integrated with another app, and by all accounts, its not very good at all. Such a shame because it really was one of the better apps.
Nice video Trev. Massive fan of viewranger and use the subscriber version. On the web version when plotting your route, there's a drop down menu for route generation top right under the map selection drop down. Doesn't snap perfectly each time but definitely speeds things up instead of having to correct or re align each waypoint.
Excellent! I have had Viewranger on my 'phone for a while but never really used it. Having watched your video I will use it more in future and might well be tempted to pay for the subscription / premium version. I was supposed to be doing the Great Glen Way this past week but it was cancelled due to Covid-19.....Viewranger would have been useful even though it's a fairly straightforward route. Stay safe and stay healthy. Cheers. Ken.
Yea, its a great little app, Ken, and I have found it a pleasure to use the mapping recently - makes navigation a lot easier. Sorry to hear you won't be making the Great Glen Way - such a shame. Hoping that we will establish some kind of normality before too long. I am absolutely itching to get out camping.
Must admit Trev I didn't rate the view ranger app but I had the free version. I had old maps lying around so used the code for the OS app. Having a subscription for any map at any time sounds brilliant. Especially if you aim to hike different areas of the UK
That's a shame to never for on with VR, I have used it for a while now and love it. I've only in the last year used the Premium version, and always found the free version to be fine, but I am glad that I paid to subscribe. It's handy no matter when I go out. cheers for watching!
Hmmm, I must have missed last weeks OS map video but funny enough, just got Viewranger on my phone so a very useful watch tonight and I have planed my firts route, so thank you very much for the walk through, just need to be able to get out and see it in action now. I subscriber to OS Map as well and find that there is always a delay when I check it, being at a previous position but it jumps to the current location. Cheers Alan
Hi Alan, this is a great little app. I know that many seem to get on ok with OS app, but for some reason it really struggled for me, but as I said, I had a cheap as s**t phone. That's probably half the reson, but alwys happy that Viewranger has never been an issue. Thanks for watching, mate!
Memory map for me. Can thoroughly recommend this. Guess everyone will have a personal preference. Got the whole UK at the 1/25000 level and can do all the same stuff pretty much. Part of the fun for me is creating my own routes and zooming around planning options. Will check this out though based on your review/experience
Cheers for the recommendation, Chris. I've not used memory map myself, but it does look ood. I think once I have started using Viewranger there is not much point changing as it works for me but also because every walk I have ever taken is logged on there now, so to change would be to split up my progression. Thanks for watching, and all the best!
Viewranger is absolutely fantastic. I've paired it, via my phone, with my Casio ProTrek watch and when synced the watch actually points the direction you need to walk in real time almost as if a personalised compass. I created custom maps each step of the way and it was incredibly useful. I've used this around the Glyderau in poor weather and it was still functioning fine. Always took a map as a back up, however!
Hi Joseph - that sounds like a great set up - and good to hear that it works whatever the weather. But yeah, always have the paper back up. Thanks for watching!
One thing I have been doing is using Stava heatmaps when planning my route to see which are the most used paths, really helps with minimising risk of getting into hot water
@@SummitOrNothing it shows where people have been (according to their Strava data). I walk a lot through farm land so it's really useful to see if there is a way though certain fields. Really good way to sense check a route you're not sure of
Thanks for this Trev, this video will help me big time, I've only used it to record trials didn't have a clue how to plot a route, Now I know I'm going to give it a try, how do I follow you on view ranger, I would love to try some of your walks ATB Trev
Hi Steve - glad to have helped. Not sure how you would follow me, I guess you just find me and press follow?? Must admit I am not following many on there. I'm only just getting to grips with what it does myself. All the best mate !
That was a brilliant video i still get confused just ringing out on my phone , defo gonna have a go at that i,ll probley have to watch it about 50 times though to make it sink in . Cheers .
I've got the OS maps subscription also, seems to work fine for me. Not sure when you last used it, but it also has the 3D maps and all the same features that Viewranger does - I just find the OS maps app/website cleaner and simpler to use :)
I have OS online, which I use a lot to print maps when I go out on the coast etc, but on my phone's (I did try it on two or three) it was always laggy and lost me. Was a shame.
I really want to get out on dartmoor. But friends tell me it can be pretty dangerous. Just getting my kit together. Can't wait do my first solo wild camp. Thanks for the vids.
Yea, it's not to be taken lightly. It's always best to stick to trails as much as possible and always go up with a map/compass or some kind of GPS device because once the weather changes and visibility fails it can be pretty disorientating. Once restrictions are lifted and when we are back to some kind of normality I will be organising some more guided walks, so you are more than welcome to join us on those.
Give it a go but try to choose a a good weather window for a first trek....Dartmoor weather can be very fickle ...Put Dartmoor Rescue 112 on your phone as you can usually get a signal on high ground should things go badly wrong!. Dartmoor Rescue are just brilliant & they have a base in Tavistock....so don't be daunted......
Great review... I personally have never had any luck with the cell based apps mainly because in about 90% of the places I hike there is no cell service.. So until I can afford a satellite based system I have to stick with map & compass.. 😢 Cheers Trev!
Yeah, I should imagine that you are quite remote out where you are, Max . Like I said, I still like to take a map and compass but use Viewranger as a back up and to record my progress. Thanks for watching!
@@HikeCamp The relive app was a little more gimmicky and I think it was quite a pricey monthly subscription price for the full package when I looked into it. Plus it didn't seem to work so well if you weren't online.

I susbcribe to OS maps too, after winning a free year subscription once I have always had it on my pc - so I print maps off and get full access on the app too, but the bloody thing was always laggy and unpredictable on my phones. Never had that trouble with Viewranger though! Cheers, Dean!
How is ViewRanger compared to OSMaps ? I pay 3.99 a month for OSMaps (should probably just grab a year huh), it's probably very similar (lets you plot routes and follows them). *Read your response to 'Life on the rocks', I've not noticed those problems.. the Viewranger photo attachment on the route thing sounds kind of nifty, will grab a trial.
I never got along with OS Maps on my phones - had in on two or three various phones and found it glitchy. I still use it online, though, but as a phone app - I have found Viewranger to be much more accurate!
Great app. I use it too. It was also very useful when I took some solo walks on a small island in Greece a couple of years ago. I downloaded some free tracks and I could always see on the map where I was in the terrain and if I was walking the right way 😁👍It made me feel quite safe. Of course I also brought a paper map just in case my phone broke down or lack of gps signal 😊
Thanks for sharing this Trevor. I looked at ViewRanger when it was first launched, but had problems. It has clearly come a long way since those days, so I may switch from my OS Maps subscription (which I have had for 3yrs) over to ViewRanger. You mentioned you have subscriptions for both. Just curious what you still use on OS Maps that you can’t do on ViewRanger ? Thanks again & ATB
Hi ya. I use the Os maps to print maps on my pc, apart from that I no longer have it on my phone. It's just something that I have found handy to keep going for the sub fee per year, saves a fortune on buying os maps every time i walk somewhere new.I can't recommend Viewranger enough - I have always found it easy to use. Thank you for watching!
No, I forgot to mention in this video that it doesn't need WiFi, or data. It can still function fully in airplane mode, although it dowsn help to have data on every now and again to load the map if you're streaming. But that being said I think that if you're using a preplanned route the map is instantly in your phone. I used it to follow a route the other day and my phone lost signal for thw entire walk but I always knew where I was on Viewranger.
Hi Trevor, great informative video. I'm looking at downloading this app to my PC. They don't seem to make a version for Windows 10. Which is what I have on my PC.
