- Behold a new flame throwing robot! And if the team that brought you the BattleBot Tombstone wants to build for fire, the naming was easy - Brimstone! This video is part 1 of 2 on the build of Brimstone, our first foray into a flame effects robot!
Brimstone is being built mostly for TH-cam use, and although it is built tough enough for combat it isn't my intention to run it an event. But honestly you just never know what the future holds! For now though, I'll be using it occasionally to set things on fire, hopefully to film for future content here!

Well, it's not going to see Battlebots if it ever goes into combat. Robots in BB have to have an active weapon, and flamethrowers don't count.
final job: paint the thing black and reddish so it looks like the whole thing is on fire, like a piece of charcoal in a fireplace :D
My prediction Ray has finally got fed up of crowds in stores and is building his own crowd clearing bot to make the Costco run easier

Always of concern is weight, strength, flexibility, availability, conductivity, price and other qualities. If 3d printing fits the bill then use it.
@@ray9368 I'm curious to know what filament did you use for the parts you showed?
For these parts is was PETG - because it was already loaded on the printer :) I'd probably use something else if this was really going to see combat.
My mind was filled with all the possibilities as soon as you started speaking. Would be nice to see Brimstone run the gauntlet.
It is built to take a stupid amount of punishment.

Hey Ray, I had no idea you had a youtube channel but I am so happy to have come across it. Your design philosophy and the competitive advantage you are able to discover, especially in Tombstone's case was quite a marvel to watch in an episodic manner. Getting to know you beyond the scope of the show and just "tombstone's creator" is exciting. You were always my favorite bot fighter, and bot maker. Just the opportunity to pick your brain on how you think about engineering would be so invaluable to those that are aspiring.
It really reminds me of an updated IceCube, man I miss team toad.
It does sort of have an Icecube feel to it. Never really noticed that!
Cool I can't wait to see it in action at NHRL Flame Botting it's way to a Golden Dumpster!

If it's going to push snow, maybe it needs free rolling wheels up front so you can add bulldozer style tracks to help with traction in the snow. That would be way more impressive than traditional tire chains.

I'll do whatever I need to in order to make the show (and therefor my sport!) be successful. Playing the bad guy was actually kind of fun really!

NinjaTec Armadillo is probably the best filament I have ever used, all the benefits of nylon and abs and prints as easy as pla. about $110 per kg
The most successful flamethrower bots lift or pin the opponent close for the sustained flame to overheat it. If Brimstone ever sees competition, I'm curious what your plans are!
I'm imagining some thick forks in front of the plow so it can get a more effective pin. Sort of Sawblaze-ish style fork setup.
Honestly there aren't any plans to put it in a competition. I'm just not completely ruling it out at some point, but it was never the idea behind the build.
Brimstone will definitely be interesting. I have a feeling Brimstone may see some serious combat at some point. Ray; do you have any idea of how many Gs of acceleration the internal components in a heavyweight robot may experience in a battle? Were things like wires, connectors, switches, tubing, tie raps, wire clips, duct tape and seemingly insignificant parts now weigh many many times more than they do at 1G? Of course the under estimation of this sometimes results in the disassembly and distribution of robot parts around the arena. Looking forward to future videos. Thanks 😊

Ray, it may be too late and you may have already thought of this but what if Brimstone had a universal 'weapon' port. You could use it or not. It would accept different types of weapons if so desired. A quick change install. Probably chain driven. Just a thought. Not too many convertible robots out there. It might be fun to design an universal 'port' for different attachments. Just in case.
A robot designed from the start to have interchangeable weapons is certainly a goal. So it's a good idea - but won't be for this one.

I just got into Battlebots recently, and I'm concerned about the future of the show given what's in the news, which would be really sad, as I've been absorbing a lot of the content.
Love Tombstone. Definitely a fan. Although I may have to cheer for Orbitron, considering they're affiliated with Waterloo. Kinda like chearing for the Blue Jays, they're my home team. LOL.
Have you ever considered filling the internal voids with aerogel? Wouldn't add much weight being the lightest stuff out there. Word is it provides 37.4C heat insulation and self-extinguishes/is flame retardant.
I've been thinking on how to handle fire issues in battle robots. I didn't know anything about the fire supression systems on bots till this video. I was thinking prior to aerogel, mechanical thermostat CO2 canisters that just self puncture. But I like aerogel better (in my layman's mind. There's also Starlite. But that would be heavier, and it's consumable, but you can put a layer of starlite on your hand and put a blowtorch on it for quite a while. It's an exothermic reaction that produces CO2).
I'm just thinking, if there's nowhere inside the bot to burn, it can't catch on fire.

Ray, I know space is at a premium, on a bot, but have you ever thought of honeycombed plastic for your battery boxes, to provide more of an air gap, sorta like the foamed Aluminum they use in Combat Cars.

Looking forward to seeing Brimstone's progress. When I see this vid the evil idea of running Brimstone into Tombstone came to mind...The wheels look better, but still kind of poking out too much. I know you don't intend to battle with this bot but I am concerned about the idea of attaching the shield directly to the frame, as all the force will go into the frame. Would adding some sort of shock absorbing system be better? Also, your previous vid implied you would be focusing on getting Tombstone ready for the TH-cam event. Does you working on this new bot imply that is no longer happening? I heard something about Destructathon shutting down but have you heard anything new about the TH-cam event you mentioned? Also, just a side thought; I am wondering if you thought of making a flipper or a claw robot one day? But it is good that you are experimenting with different kind of bots. Shows you enjoy this a lot. Plus you have the option to test them on each other if need...
Hard mounting armor isn't a bad idea, but you have to find some shock isolation for everything else. All the electronics and drive system have some sort of shock isolation built in.
The idea of shock mounting armor isn't bad, but it's harder to do right than you might think. People like me tend to rip it off if it's not hard mounted down - heck I yank off a lot of armor that is welded in place. It's just a violent sport :)
And no, this video means nothing towards Tombstone's rebuild. That is happening and things there are moving forward as expected.

If only thermal lances can be used. Stored oxygen not allowed if I remember right. Unless theirs an alternative way to quickly extract oxygen to make iron rods burn or a rule exception.
Glad I’m not the only whose frames look very ugly after a few tournaments. My beetle is looking a little worse for wear rn. I could make a new frame but it’s just not worth it when other parts break first most of the time
One of the upsides of using steel for frames, is you can almost always repair whatever damage you take at the event, as long as you have a welder and some steel to add. But over time they do tend to look pretty rough ;)

Don’t know about a straight camera robot but there’s others who’ve put a on board camera during fights.
@@PyroBear1776 yes I saw those , I was thinking more for , on the floor camera during a battle. Get a closer look at the action , more dramatic. Something that discovery might like and give them more chance to bring it back to tv ….
@@deathrev0859 NHRL's housebots have cameras mounted inside. They're infrequently used because a bot with a fixed camera in the nose is a poor cameraman.

Hi Ray I was wanting to build a heavy weight combat robot called Mr. Big Bar I was wondering if u could give me advice on building a heavy weight horizontal spinning combat robot?
If you are just starting out, by far the best advice I can give you is to start smaller. The bast way to get into the sport is antweight and beetleweight classes.

what weightclass are you going for?

Since it was never built for competition, I've never actually put it on the scale. I'd guess it's probably just under 200 pounds when completed. Maybe at some point I'll toss it on the scale and see.

I can assure that the robot has a purpose, and competing in a contest isn’t it 😊 It really is more for TH-cam fun than anything else. I don’t want to say it will never see an arena - with a stupidly thick set of forks this could win some matches for sure. But that was never the reason for building it.
