Smart vid. I usually get three or four into these compilations and move on but the quality of the camerawork and variety of subject meant I stuck around. I think my favourite was the latest vid of Union ghosting through the Doncaster murk. Lovely!
A thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining video, and wouldn't expect anything less that 100% from the White team. Expertly edited by Cameron , with exceptional filming and locations by Cameron and Paul. Paul deserves `Dad` of the year, for the miles he travel's so Cameron can produce a First Class film like this. A superb team, making a fantastic collection for all of us to enjoy.
Thank you for the film clips. This video is a testament to the many professionals, volunteers that maintain these wonderful machines in fantastic running condition.
Thank you John! I’m certainly very thankful for all of the volunteers who have put the time and effort into restoring, maintaining, cleaning, driving and firing the locomotives. It really is fantastic that we have so many locomotives to go out and see thanks to all of the volunteers :) With myself being a volunteer at the Great Central Railway for just over six years as a cleaner, it is a real honour to be part of all of this! :) Cameron
WOW so much more romantic watching steam trains thundering through the countryside at night! Funny how lot's of these trains had more modern types hooked on behind!
The diesel loco at the rear is there for a couple of reasons. It provides electric carriage heating (steam heating from the loco was discontinued years ago) & it's other purpose is as a backup in case (perish the thought) the steam loco fails. There's *huge* financial penalties imposed on the steam special operators for delaying the scheduled services in the event of a breakdown.
Now that’s what a proper train sounds like. Happy memories of watching the countryside flash past as we hurtled to our holidays. Smuts in the eye and a clout off ma for hanging out of the windows.
@@RailView_YT Thanks Cameron.... what seems like a lifetime ago I spent time in the USA, and I have fond memorie of lying in bed late in the night listening to the haunting sound of the chime whistle of a fast heavy frieght locomotive in the distance. Much like to A4 a superb sound.... best wishes, Anton.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video :) Love filming and seeing steam at night, it really has lots of atmosphere. Especially when you get sparks flying out of the chimney and the fire glow coming from the footplate :) Cameron
great video. surprised to see nethertown on here.cos i know it like the back of my hand,.has i was told by family long gone, who had a beach bungalow at caulderton, back in the 1950s etc when steam trains ran from barrow to carlisle & also alot of goods & coal trains coming from & going to whitehaven colliery,s also lowca colliery.tar plant.. & workington steelworks the beach bungalows along nethertown, caulderton..braystones would have big lumps of coal stacked up in their sheds etc.cos many a time when certain engine driver.s & firemen were on, they would go a bit slow past here & roll big lumps of coal off down the railway bank for people to use on their fireplaces..ov as long as no-one was in the way of it rolling down the bank, thanks.
Thank you Michael, glad you enjoyed the video :) That was certainly nice of the crews to do that during the winter I bet it’s freezing around that neck of the woods especially right next to the coast haha! They were certainly the days :) Cameron
Thank you Kirby! Glad you enjoyed the video :) Most steam hauled charters are usually up to 10 to 12 coaches in the UK depending on the power class of the Loco that’s pulling the tour. A lot of the time a steam tour will have a diesel on the rear to generate power to heat the coaches, possibly assist the steam loco and be there in case the steam loco fails so it can replace it. A diesel can weigh up to an equivalent of at least two extra coaches. Sometimes on steam tours you can get 13 or 14 coaches. I think 14 is the maximum a steam loco can haul on the mainline ‘I could be wrong there’ Sometimes I’ve seen steam locos such as 6233 Duchess of Sutherland hauling 14 coaches with a diesel on the rear giving no assistance which is the equivalent of about 16 coaches which is an impressive load indeed by UK standards :) Hope this helps :) Cameron
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video :) It may not look like it but they do actually have travellers on board. They really are very beautiful trains and long may they continue to run into the future :) Cameron
I've always wondered what is it with rebuilt bullied West country's and battle of Britain's at speed on the mainline the whistle can't stay in one pitch its almost like it's premature doppler effect
I think a lot of the time on rebuilt Bulleid whistles Doppler effects are caused by an echo from subjects that they pass with the whistle being place sort of on the side of the loco. I noticed it a lot when Rebuilt Bulleids whistle :)
Such a great video :) But I have a stupid question Why are all these british whistles so high pitched? I'm from America & we don't usually have that many that sound like that
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video! :) That is a great question :) It could be because of the Victorians using high pitch whistles on Great Western engines first and the GWR and other railway companies around the time keeping pretty much kept the same design of whistle ‘known as a bell whistle because of the shape I think’ There have been quite a lot of different types of whistles on UK steam locos throughout the years but all of them are smaller than American whistles. This is probably due to the size difference between locos in the UK and US with the US steam being bigger and having more boiler pressure due to the size. ‘I’m not 100% sure on all this I’m probably wrong haha’ There are some low pitch whistles in the UK however known as Stanier hooters carried on most LMS locos :) Hope this helps :) Cameron
In the 1960s when the West Coast Mainline was electrified they banned steam from travelling under the wires fearing that they would damage them. Thankfully this ban doesn’t exist anymore. The yellow cab stripe was to signify that the loco was banned from travelling south of Crewe where at the time was electrified, this was applied to a lot of locomotives the 1960s. They applied this to the Duchess in 2017 to represent her look before she was withdrawn from BR service. Hope this helps :) Cameron
Oh yeah... I mean... I’m not sure why British Rail put those stripes on them... I mean there were some instances that the locomotives were shunting themselves at low speed at Crewe station underneath the electrical wires. Perhaps they just wanted steam off the top link express trains out of Euston as they’re days wound down.
Leander wore that livery in the LMS days and in preservation from when she returned in the 1970s to 2012 before she was painted BR black in 2014 for the first time since the 1950s. Hope this helps :) Cameron
@@RailView_YT I heard that the vaccine is done and will be distributed. Currently to older people, but I think things will finally go back to normal sometime next year
Most of the time they use to diesels on the rear to generate heat into the coaches. Some are also on the rear in case the steam loco fails and sometimes they do assist the steam locos. Hope this helps :) Cameron

How is the diesel engine coordinared with the steam engine pulling the train. If the styeam ebine brakes, does the disel also.

British steam traction scratches an inch. Sometimes we need a temporary escape from today's madness. There really isn't anything quite like it...
