    Hi! How do I shift from training with food to training with play and praise? I find training Snoopy (my beagle) with treats a bit problematic because he only listens to me when I have treats on hand but when I don't he just ignores me. Thank you for the vids BTW!

    Thank you so much for sharing this video! I just got my 7 weeks old Beagle a week ago and i already watched some of your video including "training without treats", because i know Beagles are prone to obesity. Like you've said Beagle is so smart and actually we don't need treat to teach them! My puppy always doing her potty above her potty pad after only two times of correction. I'm on training her to understand some commands like "leave it", "stop"; "stay" and "sit". She now even could sitting down while waiting on me preparing her meals ☺

    Wish I had seen this when I first got my beagle. She loves praise and long naps but I sometimes feel that food is what she loves the most. Food drives her crazy and unfortunately she is overweight and has some arthritis. We do take very long, slow walks where she is allowed to stop and sniff as much as she enjoys. Thanks for all this very valuable information.

      Most beagle and dog owners feel the same that their dog loves food but we all love food. Training and food are different topics though.

    I have a 2 years old beagle - Milo. In the last 6 months I observe he is becoming aggressive, and has bitten people at home as well as recently bit a stranger who encroached his personal space while he was on walk, without first familiarizing herself. We have a trainer, and in his recommendation, we have put a choke chain to train him. I will also confess, that we have not socialized him enough when he was a puppy. 1st 6 months he was only limited to the family and no one beyond. I understand we have made mistakes, is there a way we can rectify and calm him. We take him for walk twice in a day and exercise him, obviously with treats. I will follow your video to train without treats. Looking for your suggestion pls.

      This beahaviour is due to lack of socialization, not knowing what to do and also stress. To address all these you need a good plan which it means working with a dog trainer or behaviourist. Hi Saro, I like your videos and I have a question. I do mixed rewards for my Beagle. Treats, praise, cuddles and play. Before one of the main meals of the day we usually have a very active training session using part of the upcoming meal for treats and during this 15 minute training session we make huge strides. As time goes on we're noticing the Beagle being more chill around food, e.g. if we're eating dinner or there are people snacks around or if something is cooking etc so if it is having a negative impact we're not really noticing it.
    These 15 minute session before a meal, most commonly lunch, seems to really establish new skills very quickly. We're indoors and we can keep a really rapid pace since there aren't really any distractions. The Beagle is super happy, eager and acts very intelligently toward solving new challenges. Every minute or two we do some cuddles before we continue. He is perfectly fine with treats being occasional the rest of the time and loves all the reward categories.
    Is my thinking alright as long as it doesn't spill into other behaviors?

    • @SaroDogTraining
      @SaroDogTraining  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The idea behind the concept of training dogs with or without treats is that the reward should not override the life of the dog. If your beagle is doing well with the training with treats, you want to question if the beagle will do the task without the treats as well. If dogs do things for the treats, just like people who work for the reward of payday, as a result, dogs will resist working just like you do. Try engaging with your beagle without treats and see if it responds the same way, better or worse. I also, as mentioned, don't suggest using treats to teach a behaviour.

    Hi we have a beagle for about 1,5 years, and he's almost 2 years young. He's a really nice and friendly, but sometimes he gets extremely wild and aggressive. Especially when he want to play. And also I wonder if you might have some advice for the following... Our dog "Rocky" (Yes as in Rocky Balboa ;-) ) is super scared of his cage. We have a cage in the car for keeping him safe during driving. But as soon as we put him inside he start to shake like crazy and doesn't stop barking. And since we had a new car it even got worse. I don't know why because we never had anything traumatic happening with him. We always take him with us, we Never leave him alone at home. Now I really don't want to get upset and shout at him, because I know this is not the (right) solution. But he's driving me crazy. Do you have any suggestions?

      Do you work for free?
      Reach out to him and say, "I want to PAY good money for your education and expertise that you certainly deserve. Can you please help me if I give you money?"
      Watch how long you have to wait before you get a response...

    Another usefull tip: NEVER EVER give your food, or any other "human" food to your beagle. Clear rules what belongs to humans makes your life so much easier, prevents food robberys... by the way, you look a bit like bassethound.. gentle, smart, friendly and great nose :) meaning no offence, its a compliment..
