As such, once it began to be written, many tribes adopted different ways. A big thing to understand about Te Ao Maori (the maori world) is that pre-colonization, there was no such thing as "maori", it was just a bunch of different, often warring tribes. The rough "unification" of these tribes into "maori" came after colonization.
