They changed the name because there is a band called bad optics from Seattle already that has been around the punk scene for a little bit, and they are making waves a little, and they politely asked Tim and Jesse to change the name so that they could keep their band name that they've been working on for a few years.

Hot take but Rancid's first demos before Lars is some of the finest punk I've ever heard.
Tim and Matt didn’t form Rancid for a while after Op Ivy broke up. Op Ivy was getting too big so they broke up. Tim started drinking heavily and doing drugs and going nowhere. So Matt called him up to start a band to try to help his friend get his life together. That’s when Rancid formed. Pretty sure there’s videos of Matt and Tim talking about this.
Downfall was Tim & Matt's first band after opiv. Unless you count DHC
I like bad optics better as a band name. I’m stoked for this project. It opens the door for one off op ivy shows in the future. I’m glad they buried the hatchet and are making art together again

Im sure he came up with the name "bad optics" after his doctor prescribed glasses with the wrong strength. That must be it.
After hearing 'Raid', i'm stoked to hear the album.
I hate to say it, but Doom Regulator is a terrible name compared to Bad OPtix. It seems like self-sabotage. Lol, is there a new Rancid album coming out?
I thought they changed it because a super small band with the same name made a bunch of noise about it.

They changed their name to DOOM REGULATOR as ‘Bad Optics’ made them aware they were upset. They changed it promptly out of respect it seems. I preferred BAD OPTIX, but we need a bit of doom regulation during these tough and rough days!
They should change it to Doomed Operation
There was a band called Downfall between OPIV and Rancid. Similar to OPIV. There's some stuff on the TH-cam. Really good actually. Not sure if Matt was involved or not. Sounds like it to my ears tho.
matt was in downfall. then they formed dance hall crashers and promptly quit to form rancid
The Downfall Leaks are legit worth listening to. Perhaps moreso than operation ivy. Very disappointing we don't have an official release or remaster.

@@briantomcollins they had recorded a small albums worth of songs. Some higher quality rips of a few of them are floating around all the muck.
So this isn’t going to be popular. Americans never really got Ska. It’s a British/Jamaican thing. Plenty of US bands tried to copy Ska from the UK but it always sounded too polished. Listen to the Mm Bostones then The Specials and you’ll see what I mean. This is new in that it actually sounds like a genuine regale record, it’s got some real dirt about it and it works. I like.
Agreed. Most US incarnations were too clean, too brass oriented, not enough garage vibe.

Man, hope they come to Gilman. I remember when Lint used to sell tye dye on Telegraph. Saw Op Ivy many times around the bay area. I always used to wear my two tone ska shirt with my MA1 jacket and docs… Lint even complimented me on my shirt once, sweet! Hope they play at Gilman.
100 they should have kept Bad Optix, I keep expecting Doom Regulator to be Tim's stab at doom metal (which I wouldn't mind, tbh)
Ok, wasnt a fan of this channel, then heard Dan Framton's opinion of Rancid (2000). The most underrated Rancid album. One of my favs as well.
I guess I have to subscribe now.

Well we only heard one song. Hopefully there's more songs more in a hardcore/punk direction. The new Classics of Love is straight on hardcore so maybe there's more songs like that style. With a name like Doom Regulator I'm sure there will be.

If you weren't a punk back in the day , you probably wouldn't know but operation ivy broke up they started a band called Downfall and recorded one record then after that band they started Rancid....

Raid is a good song and calls back to thr opivy track "Take Warning" with horns added. Like bad optix vs doom regulator but like some have said it is the name of another band.

Doom regulator sounds waaaay better than Bad optix. I thought bad optix was a terrible band name from the jump. Plus I really dig the traditional ska sound they're going for instead of ska-punk. Fits them better.

This song is Rad! hate to be disagreeable but Dont be swayed by this this video review! Decide for yourselves. IMO Dope production thought provoking lyrics , time bomb Tim does it again with this supernatural guitar hook and with the mastery of an architect building a bridge . 2 legendary pioneers of the 2nd wave , respect for 1st wave Jamaican Rocksteady kings. Perhaps your expectation was the thief of happiness with regard to your review . Perhaps listen again and beware to first Free your mind. There’s Black magic in this music if it grabs you there’s nothing to fear it just means you have IT.

When I first heard raid I was digging it . By the time they had their name changed I was over it. It's a good song but it isn't great and would have hit harder ten years ago. I'd like to see new common rider albums tbh.
I dig the sax but it sounds like it was recorded at a different quality then the rest of the instruments and it makes it stand out in a bad way. It sounds classic but at the same time over produced and way too polished for something also at the same time trying to be lofi. I'd like to hear more but I won't expect it to be the best shit ever. They should go back to ripping off the clash. That's the shit we all love
Raid is a solid rocksteady song and I'm fine with that. This people are pushing 50. I'm not expecting them to revolutionize the genre.

The instrumental part of the song is amazing. In vein of 60s Rocksteady. Amazing. The instrumental is amazing and it is rocksteady the way it is meant to be played. With the one drop style beat and not all that extra obnoxious kick drum turning into a rock beat.

i loved the new song. rancid is my favorite band but the only album of theirs i didnt like is the 2000 self titled. i think you just dont enjoy reggae. tims reggae album "a poets life" is one of my favorite albums. and i'm not sure where you were, but there was a ton of buzz when this new song came out. it filled all my social media feeds.
