    Oldschool and true craftsmanship like play. This takes me back when a friend of my Dad get to do the concrete works around our house. He is so cool just like a child playing with dirt, mixing and plastering and scatters cement powder like making a mess just to be amazed later on by the end result with awe. This mason deserves the best pay there is for his job. Thanks for posting!

    I just found this video, I've been involved n construction for twenty years, and I have to say in that time I can count the number of men I have seen such pride in their work. This is not merely a tradesman, but a true craftsman at work, for whom nothing but his best work will do.

    This decorative technique is very popular in south east Asia, it's been around for hundred of years... you wash it off which reveals a coarse pebble surface with variations of color. very unique!

      Thank you for your comment. Of course, there are a number of really good alternative methods being used to achieve high standard results. It is a good idea to use a grinding or polish machine to acquire a smooth and shiny surface. If possible, we would be interested to see a video in which you use this polishing machine on walls and other surfaces. Thanks again. In our country, we have a well known expression and that is we are never too old to learn.

      +Ivanilton Cordeiro Araujo Thank you for sharing your home town community projects and building structures with us. It seems there is a lot of work to complete here. And, many of the walls of these buildings would need to be cement rendered or subway, rock tile or ceramic could be installed for outward appearance. Here in my country we often use pebble dash or subway tiles together for decorative and to strenthen the outside walls. This is because we live in a tropical rainfall area. Best wishes and if you have any further questions, always welcome.

    he is the nicest looking construction man i've seen so far. first, his long hair look cool. 2nd, his dress.. modern, nice, and very clean. even his shoe is new and clean, free of cement. first i thought maybe this is not his full time career, just that he like to DIY. but if you see his forearm, it's very thick and those is muscle fiber type 1. so indeed it is a construction forearm type. mean, he really do construction job. so my conclusion to myself is : he is a full time construction worker. and that is his own house due to his nice dressing. anyway, his work is very nice and i like the way he work.. the area he work is very clean. he manage everything into a clean manner, his clothes, his working space, and those tools he used. well done.

    Great Video, thanks for sharing, couple of Questions,
    1: The first coat of render you put down, is that Tile Adhesive? just spread with a notch trowel as a primer for your pebbble render?
    2: Is that straight portland cement you mix with the pebbles?
    2: why dont you mix some fine sand with the pebble render to reduce cement, and create more slurry/fines to help fill the gaps?
    3: Do you use any additives, like plasticiser , latex or PVA bond crete type glues to aid adhesion? or just plain cement, pebbles and water?
    4: do you ever give the pebble render an acid wash a couple days after the section of render is dry?
    Cheers!.

    • @skylark22045
      @skylark22045  9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      We are sorry for our late reply. To answer your first question. Yes, this is tile adhesive and we use this as part of the second coat and it acts as a bonding agent too. Yes it is also a primer to our pebble render. Secondly, yes it not only portland cement but we have added stone powder or we also call it lime mixed in with the pebbles. This stone powder acts as reinforcement to ensure the pebble dash is solidly bonded on the wall. Thirdly, no we don’t mix sand with the pebbles because when it dries, it contracts as you would know and this would cause cracks and it wouldn’t help to fill the gaps. So we wouldn’t advise you to do this. In fact, please don’t mix with sand as it will be a 100% failure. To answer question 4, .. we simply use tile adhesive, portland cement and stone powder mixed with water and please don’t use glues or any other additives because you will need to wash out with a sponge and if you use glues you could imagine the result. Finally, this is a good question. After two days we use a special liquid oil which we brush over the wall. Thank you for sharing your questions and view with us. We hope this has answered your questions. Always welcome, ...

      +Sky Lark - Jumping in with a few questions too.
      First great job and well done. I always love this kind of finishing.
      I like to do this using a kind of red colored small gravel for an outsidewall. Around 25m2.I want to pre color the cement and then mix it with the gravel. I guess the lime make it smooth and plastisch. Should I use Lime with the color? Or does it soften/bleech the color?
      Also after two or three day’s ( covered ) drying, I would like to spray a epoxy film/layer to get it a little more protected and shiny. What do you think? Any suggestions of product? Lime vs color vs cement mix suggestions? Of course I will create a test area, but with good start information, like this and your comments I can save a lot of failures. Thank you very much.

    • @skylark22045
      @skylark22045  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +rvamerongen Thank you for your comment and sorry for our late response. Due to our busy schedule, we have not had time to get back to comments shared up until now. Yes, of course, the function of lime is not only to make the surface smooth but also ensures to reinforce the stone solidly on the wall. Yes, you can use lime with colored pebbles. Yes, it is a good idea to spray an epoxy layer in order to protect and maintain the shiny appearance. Yes, go ahead and try it out, .. the more you do the job, the more familiar you will be with this application. Everyone who likes this type of finish can try it out. Hopefully you can take a video of your project and we would be happy if you'd share it with us. We welcome any questions or queries. Thank you.

    nice job, but can you also use a power wash to wash off the cement or will it be a bad idea

    • @skylark22045
      @skylark22045  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment. Yes, of course you can use a power cleaner to wash out the stone powder or so called stone mortar but be careful when using the power cleaning agent. First make sure the small stone mortar has completely dried before applying cleaner to wash out. Normally we can identify whether the small stone mortar has fully dried by a color change which should look like a natural cement color. Usually we wait for about 2 to 3 hours before washing out and this is why we use the sponge and water to wash out because we don't always have time to spare to wait for the drying out time. Also, this construction method we refer to as pebble stone reinforcement on walls. Hopefully this answers your query and always welcome. Thank you.

    How exactly did u mix pebble dash? how long should I leave it to dry before I wash it?

    • @skylark22045
      @skylark22045  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you for viewing our video. To answer your question, ... first, we add water then the pebble stones. We add the lime or stone powder as well as cement and mix it with the electrical mixing machine. The proportion is, 2 cups stone powder, 1 cup pebble stones, 1 cup cement, 3.5 or 4 cups water. Once the small stones have been rendered, wait about 40 to 50 mins also depends on the weather. Then, use a large sponge from right to left direction aand from top to bottom. Please note, you must use tile adhesive to apply on the wall which will be your 2nd coat and this will act as a bonding agent before you render the pebble dash between the stone and brick to ensure that the small stones are solidly applied to the wall. We welcome any further questions.

    This is a different method from pebble dash (which literally means you throw scoops of pebbles on wet plastered walls), but in my view this is much much nicer, It's a lot of work but an absolutely beautiful, and I would imagine more durable finish. I'm thinking is it possible to mix the pebbles into white or coloured cement? Is it a special type of cement you mixed in?

    may i know what is the ration of cement water and the stone.. i did diy a small portion but after dry it crack what is the problem?

    • @skylark22045
      @skylark22045  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thank you for your question. It is impossible that the mixture with pebbles should dry out and crack unless you forgot to add the bonding agent before you applied to the surface. So called bonding agent can be used as a tile adhesive just as we've used it here from the beginning of this video of ours. This means, with the added bonding agent, the pebbles will be solidly bonded to the surface. And, you need to add not only cement but also lime which we call stone powder. The ratio is: 1 cup cement, 6 cup stone powder (lime), and approximately 10 cup pebbles. To this add, roughly 7 - 10 cups of water. This ratio mixture should be correct. If possible, could you load up a video so that we can watch how you mix the mortar? And, what is your wall surface made out of? Please follow up with us and welcome to share your feedback. Please don't feel frustrated, just try it again, .. we'd be happy to help.

    Great work! I am trying to do the same in US and need your help. What is the first coat comprised of? How long should we wait before applying the adhesive? How long should we wait until we apply the last coat with pebbles?
    Thanks.

      Thank you for your comment. We are sorry for our late reply due to a busy schedule. Knowing that you are interested in the sand and cement pebble dash, we are sure you can do this job very well. To answer your question, ... our first coat is comprised of sand and cement and you should wait for about 24 hours before you apply the adhesive. And after the adhesive is applied, you can apply the pebbles directly. Just one thing more to keep in mind, 1) function of adhesive here is to act as a bonding agent, meaning to bond the wall and pebble stone and 2) after completing the application of final coat with pebble stone, you should wait about 45 mins to 1 hour for the application to dry. After this, you need a large sponge with which you will need to wash out the stone powder so that the pebble stones can shine through. If the pebble stone happen to fall down at this point, please wait a little longer to ensure it is dry. And "dry" means the pebbles are bonded solidly onto the wall. Normally, when we wash out the stone powder, we will also wash out just a few pebbles and this is okay but only about 1 to 2% can be lost. The most difficult part of this application is how to use the sponge properly to wash out the stone powder but leave the pebbles in place so wipe the surface gently. Thank you and we hope you can share with us a video to show your process of work. We welcome any further question or query.

      Thanks for your response and encouragement. I am hoping to do atleast 50% as good as you. I have another question. Did you make the first application a scratch coat? Or was it a smooth surface before applying adhesive followed by pebbles.

    • @skylark22045
      @skylark22045  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Ashok Madhvesh Thank you for your question. So called scratch coat is what we call rough surface and it doesn't matter whether first coat is smooth or rough. More importantly, is ensure the wall surface is vertical and horizontal. Also remember, adhesive acts as a bonding agent so we suggest you to use tile adhesive which should be easier for you when you apply it. If your first coat is not smooth, not to worry because by applying adhesive, it will make surface smooth eventually. Thanks again.

    Interesting technique and nice looking finish 👍🏿 seems a lot more time consuming than the process we use in the uk, where we lay on a butter coat then simply throw the desired stone on to butter coat then leave to dry ?? Good job tho

      @Harles74 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I watched the uk method on youtube, but in my opinion, this method although slower, seems to be stronger, more resistant. And looks like better. That's what i think and my opinion, obviously...

    Lovely but where im from thats bot pebble dash now im no builder but was old enough to take notice when the builders my dad hired did our extension with pebble dash. He did all the same you're guy did wow he could be youre dad no offence intended cos I'm curious about what other ppl think ...I taught it was done very similar but instead of smoothing it they flicked the coarse mix at the wall where it would stick to the skin i think they called it now this was all 30odd yrs ago but I've the scariest of good memorie it looked similar but was the furthest away from smooth ...but its a lovely job I'd be lucky to have skills to match him ...

    • @orrixgirl
      @orrixgirl 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ohhh i see what he did he washed out the excess from between the stones sorry pebbles its actually a nicer cleaner job ,if I remember correctly the builders didn't clean the dropped pebble mix before it started to set so there was a white line of a lime cement mix on the ground all the way around the house after they were done it faded after a couple of years but it was a point of contention between my parents for the rest of there marriage...my lesson here don't comment till the end of the video ...now i feel like an ass but have learned something new and for that I thank you both of you . In front of the camera and behind the camera...
