I'm happy for Sophie receiving the recognition she deserves. This is such a classic song. Love you Sophie.
Maybe in USA, because this song was a hit in Europe and Latin America between 2001 and 2002...

I love how not only the song is tied to Saltburn but the video as well. She reigned victorious after literally taking down each opponent. That is insane to me. It could be total coincidence but it feels almost as if the whole film is a sort of homage, or at least inspired by the song which is so incredible. Either way, a BRILLIANT use of song in a film. Dare I say, one of the best I've seen. Though I've always known the song, I have a new appreciation and love for it especially after seeing the video. I'm having such a great time diving into the rest of Sophie's music. I highly recommend all to do the same if you haven't already!
Especially the feeling that the victory is hollow in the end. Brilliant song choice.
100%. The video is so ahead of its time with the tiktok-like set pieces, diverse cast, and meta black humor tone.

@@nahuelconstantineyeah i’m aware we aren’t the center of the universe and I’ve never believed as such. But op is acting like Americans deliberately slept on this when it was never even brought to the table 💀 you can’t enjoy something you aren’t aware exists. Plus TH-cam and other streaming services weren’t what they are now, back then… we have algorithms now that can push forward other content that matches what you listen to. Ai is a thing… like exposure to international artists was limited unless they spent $$$$ for international promo and it mattered what platforms you consumed music from as well.
@@nahuelconstantine and the video was playing all the time in MTV Latin America
The use of GD in the lyrics didn’t help its case for radio play. The US is deeply puritanical and usage of foul language was just not accepted in female pop music.

Iconic video, massively nostalgic song. Sophie actually came up with the idea of the video when she saw "They Shoot Horses Don't They?". That film is about a dance marathon contest where the last couple standing win a cash prize. Whatever happened to this kind of pop? It's so upbeat, melodic, groovy compared to the stuff of today
Bad Boots it's more dance, euro and even disco pop, but agree
Bad Boots Not really. Back when this came out, we were wondering why tunes weren't as catchy on the whole as they were back in the '80s etc. Every generation looks back to the classics of the previous era, but at the time those good songs came out they were buried in a ton of dross too. Years later only the gold is remembered.
You wait, in 2030 people will be leaving comments on the top tunes from 2017 going "man, the songs were so much better back then, wtf happened".
Same as it ever was. Same as it ever was.

Omar Garibay really? For me this quality gives the video a fuckin amazing vibe!
Daniel AlmirI It is at good quality, but we are in 2017, it would have better been re-uploaded in a higher definition or screen configutation
Agreed, given that this was shot in 35mm it could be even uploaded at 4K. Sadly, many music companies just provide the masters used for tv broadcast or dvd collections from most of their libraries. I doubt this was edited in 4K, though. Probably down-converted to 2K for post, then delivered in HD or even SD for the final product. I've seen rare cases of old music videos uploaded here in TH-cam that were restored in HD from their original masters. Sadly, not the case here.
l love you good

One of the few english singers who actually sings in their own accent 👌
We do sing in our own accent. It's coincidence that the average English accent sounds American when singing. It naturally transforms into the more American-sounding style due to the flattening out and blending of syllables that is inherent in keeping a tune. I have the same accent as Sophie and you have to consciously adjust your voice if you want to keep it when singing.
For real English music try Al Ross and the Planets " Love is Murder " on u tube
English music English accents
dons floh
@@SnowdropWood You are utterly delusional. People sing in American accents because they've heard so much American music.
It's a trend that goes back to the 1960's, when we began imitating American rock singers, it's no coincidence.
Saltburn **shudders**
This was played when I met the girl of my dreams, fast forward 21 years, now my wife and best friend, a son to show and no looking back, I look forward to the next 21 years 😊
Wow that’s amazing ❤️
Congrats, friend!
nawwwww
@@elenjones7633 thanks! 23 years In August!! Gets better every year 😁
What a brilliant song just saw Saltburn and this stole the show!! Perfect movie and perfect song now I’m addicted to it ❤❤❤
Yes, that last scene totally wrapped the movie up in paper and tied it up with a pretty little bow. It fit perfectly
Amen.
What movie

Thank you Saltburn for introducing this banger to an old yankee. Love from New England USA
I’m a New Englander USA 🇺🇸
@@anamericanprayer1967Same! NH. ♥️
Massachusetts checking in.
Same!
No bro
What a come back for this song. Amazing how it still sounds like songs do today with it's production
I don't understand how this song never took off in the US?! It's a masterpiece and could've been an even bigger hit than it already is if it charted there.
just simple reason : the singer isn't American...that's all
Maybe, her daddy's attitude was wearing them thin 🎉
She even used the expression "goddamm"" too.
Many British act have smashed rhe American charts
According to her book, her label tried to push her but it was going to be a 6 months promotional campaign at a time where a lot of British pop stars were struggling to break into the US so she passed.
A special thanks to Saltburn for putting me onto this absolute BANGER!!
Loving how so many new people are discovering this amazing song! It has been a favorite of mine since its release.
same here! this song does not age!
Why am I just now hearing this song being played? It's like seven years old and I only just now heard it on the radio??? It's awesome.
it's from 2002... so it's 22 yo😅
Saltburn
Sophie Ellis-Bextor oozes naughtiness. She is so perfect as a bad girl. She would have made a perfect supervillian in the movies.
LOL her Mum was a Blue Peter host, she performed this on the show.
it's hilarious how she just gets more and more pissed/annoyed at the other dancers and the judges as the vid goes on, i love her expressions lol XD
Just imagine her singing this at a club she owns as the villainess
Very accurate comment🎉
Or "widowmaker" in "Overwatch" perhaps ;)
2:00 the look on her face 😂😂🤣🤣
What's great about this is how upbeat and sweet it sounds, while she is literally ruining lives on that dancefloor!
😅😅😅😅the same way Oliver ruined the lives of the Catton family lol
it's called funk.
TH-cam version with added claps and stomps is far superior than the Spotify version. Or studio version cannot tell me otherwise even my bro thinks so too he’s like bro where’s the stomps play the TH-cam video 🤣👌
NOTHING CAN KILL THIS SONG!
I couldn’t ask for a better music video to go with this perfect song.
Def one of the best eras of music.
Great to hear it thriving again.
deff
Used to watch as a child OBSESSED with her green sparkly eyeshadow and the SHOES! I must recreate this look! X
Am still in love in that look, but not on myself affcourse
Gosh this woman is BEAUTIFUL
Fr fr your so right 👍
I think Sophie raised millions on her video during lockdown for a children's charity
I genuinely think this song could still hold up in the charts if it was released today!
Wow. I didn't know Saltburn brought this song back into massive popularity. I've been hearing it regularly for years on TV music shows and at the gym here in Germany.
Saltburn was my first exposure, and I’m in my late 30s from the US. Could just be because I don’t listen to the radio or pop, but afaik it wasn’t huge here.
Same wit the radio etc..hear it often
