I’m someone who smiles under heavy stress. I’ve caught myself smiling before during mental breakdowns similar to how alastor does. It is 100% a coping mechanism I started doing as a kid that just stuck. Idk if he’s being forced to smile there but he may be forcing a smile as a cope if that makes sense
OMG FINALLY SOMEONE WHO SAID IT THANK YOU yes I too tend to smile + manically laugh while having breakdowns and panik attacks (It gives one the feeling of control + in social situations laughing and smiling and crying is more acceptable and confusing/deceiving than screaming and crying) so yeah I really dont get why so many people are confused by alastors smile, no one was when joker did...
This is me 😅 I also laugh in mental breakdowns, and when I'm truly angry I start calm, laugh and then smile the entire time. Tbh I grew up with the same thought process as Alastor that a smile is a useful tool, and I've always used it. Tbh I think very rarely am I not smiling. And tbh it really does throw people for a loop, back in school I had a lot of issues with bullies early on and I live in a pretty dangerous town so as I grew up it turned from bullying to actual life and safety risks. One thing I leanred to get people to leave me alone is to make everyone think I was crazy, and I mean like actually 10p% psychopath crazy. I used over dramatic gory threats, talked about things most sane people wouldn't, and consistently smiled even when people were trying to shove me into a fight. And at every school the first incident, I'd threaten something small like one highschool I threatened someone I'd stab them with a pencil if they didn't stop trying to steal stuff from my bag. They tried again, and I did it no hesitation smile on my face looking them right in the eyes. Stuff like that, and then people 100% believed if I said I'd do something I would hence they'd all think I'm crazy. And since where I live its normal for violence to happen the only risk is if the kid said something, and there was never anyone brave enough to do so so 🤷♀️
I personally don’t smile when having a mental a breakdown but I do smile whenever I talk to people when I’m extremely nervousm or when I’m not even trying to, ppl view as some extremely cheery go lucky person that can’t think of anything seriously. Or smiles, like most emotions, are very complex and have many meanings. Such as malice, because he’s a sharp toothed demon. And the episode where he states he considers a Smile a tool that should always be worn.
But maybe he's just saying that to hide the fact that always smiling is part of his personal hell. Imagine you have to constantly smile no matter what you see, hear, feel. Not only that, his shadow self is often shown with the jagged lips and/or stitched mouth/corners of the mouth. This implies his shadow self is actually his true self, making it a pun that he's just a shadow of what he used to be.
I think sometimes people forget that alastor being forced to smile isn’t canon. Like I see some people catch 1 frame of him not smiling and thinking they figured something out.
But also if you look closely in "I will make you wish i stayed gone" Song. He turned into a monster and you could see small stiches holding his face at the edge of his mouth
Fun fact:alastor when he goes into demon form we can see a X on his forehead,It actually represents how he died. He was shot in the head with a bullet from a gun.He died in the early 18s and we can also see in welcome to heaven song we can also see his mom in heaven. She was a background character for the the welcome to heaven song and we didn’t see his mom for very long in the song but we ALSO saw stolas mom (maybe) in the poison video, when the 3 background characters are getting angel dust ready and the small owl like lady runs off of scene it is seen that she has red eyes and color like stolas. And also we saw his grandma (MAYBE.) in the pilot! In inside everyone demon is a rainbow song we can see a tall owl with red eyes and a grey like color what may be stolas grandma and his mom,But also alastor does have a stitched smile. It is a theory that he made a deal with Lilith. Lucifer’s daughter and made a deal that alastor could tear apart Charlie’s heart,And ALSO he only smiles when he’s around nifty and Rosie. And also another theory that alastor grew up with sisters,He takes care of nifty like a kid and a sister,And nifty is 22 and Japanese.
I've been saying the same thing for so long, my only addition is that I believe it was that he was most likely smug to whomever he actually made the deal with (personally believe it was Eve or Lilith), but they probably pulled a "oh you want to be so smug about your powers, then so be it" kinda thing
It’s also worth noting that he grew up with the ideology of “you’re never fully dressed without a smile” which is something he said he would always do after his mother died and that was something she always said.
I feel like he genuinely smiles quite a few times throughout the show. Of course, most of the time his smiles were just for show, but I think his smiles with Rosie and some of them with Niffty were real smiles.
I think that the reason why al constantly smiles is to honor his mother that passed away and I think that al promised to keep smiling no matter what because of what I know his mother loved his smile.
THANK YOU, finally someone saying that the stitches hold his smile from ripping and don't force him. The amount of people saying the stitches force him it's incredible
I thing he smiles beacose as he said a smile makes sure your in control he dosnt say in control of what but I believe wen he smiles he dose that to create an illusion that he is control of his shoul
I know I'm late but I think him smiling through a break down was actually a coping mechanism. The last sense of control he has in that moment after his power has failed him is his smile. He confirms to Charlie that his smile is to tell everyone he's in control of the situation
Idk but I feel like Alastor genuinely smiles quite often. One I don’t see mentioned much is his smile during “More than Anything”, when it pans around to the members of the hazbin hotel, it shows Alastor smiling. Not his usual, toothy and cartoonish grin, but a soft, seemingly genuine smile at the compliments of Charlie and the rebonding of father and daughter. Even if he doesn’t like Lucifer, he can’t deny it’s sweet to see their reunion.
I can agree that Alastor is smiling widely. It could be he had to use his power to keep it from tearing his face apart. But nobody is making him smile. He's practicing what he preaches. In his last song of the season, he is smiling out of habit to try to maintain any amount control.
Actually, he always smiled when he was alive. To him, a smile is a powerful tool to leave his enemy guessing. Plus, it's was confirmed that he hates frowning, so I dont think he can't frown, I think he doesn't want to under any circumstances

No, he is genuinely smiling, the stitches are literally the only thing keeping his smile smaller then it can be, if it got bigger it’d rip his face apart
"Hehehehe...just because you see a smile, don't think you know what's going on underneath. A smile is a valuable tool, my dear. It inspires your friends, keeps your enemies guessing, and ensures that, no matter what comes your way, YOU'RE the one in control." - alastor
Alastor smiles because it makes him feel like he has the upper hand at all times, it truly doesn’t go much further than that.
It goes much deeper than that ass rider he littarly explains that himself in the show you people think Alastor is this some Cocky with a high ego
Don’t forget that cute scene with him and nifty I will never forget that cute display
Because they are glowing
When Alastor genuinely smiled, his smile was so wide is face was going to rip apart and the stitches were to hold his face together
also when mimzy came to the hotel, alastor genuinely smiled.
I’m pretty sure it was stated that Alastor believes that smiling is a sign of strength and that not smiling is weakness
He never stops smile cuase he told his mom he would never stop smiling
Not only that, his shadow self is often shown with the jagged lips and/or stitched mouth/corners of the mouth. This implies his shadow self is actually his true self, making it a pun that he's just a shadow of what he used to be.
He paid 50k to crack that smile
I think sometimes people forget that alastor being forced to smile isn’t canon. Like I see some people catch 1 frame of him not smiling and thinking they figured something out.
Well you're never fully dressed without a smile!
I heard that in Alastor's voice
The smile thing is by his own decision as he made a promise to his mom before she died to never stop smiling
I'd like to think that he also smiler when seeing minzy and rosie
Yeah, I like to think that his softer smiles around Nifty, Rosie, and Mimzy are all true smiles as well
@@Kaylee-Bear yea forgot bout nifty for a sec omg I love her 😭
But also if you look closely in "I will make you wish i stayed gone" Song.
Yes, i love Alastor from Haspen Hotel
It's hazbin hotel
nuh-uh it Haspen Hotel like the vid said@@akirafritz-
@@Diz_Nash well that person don't know how to spell looking it up ANYWHERE spells it as h-a-z-b-i-n even in the hashtags in the bottom of the short
@@akirafritz- Nuh-uh
@@Diz_Nash look at the hashtags at the bottom of the short and see if I'm right
I've been saying the same thing for so long, my only addition is that I believe it was that he was most likely smug to whomever he actually made the deal with (personally believe it was Eve or Lilith), but they probably pulled a "oh you want to be so smug about your powers, then so be it" kinda thing
I thought when he was talking to nifty in ep 7 he was truly smiling 😁
It’s also worth noting that he grew up with the ideology of “you’re never fully dressed without a smile” which is something he said he would always do after his mother died and that was something she always said.
I feel like he genuinely smiles quite a few times throughout the show. Of course, most of the time his smiles were just for show, but I think his smiles with Rosie and some of them with Niffty were real smiles.
This is such an interesting interpretation! I think this would be way cooler than the stitches representing him being forced to smile.
I think that the reason why al constantly smiles is to honor his mother that passed away and I think that al promised to keep smiling no matter what because of what I know his mother loved his smile.
That was just a fan theory based on a comic unfortunately:(
@@chameleon9359 dang I thought it was cannon
Ah yes, my favorite show, haspen hotel
THANK YOU, finally someone saying that the stitches hold his smile from ripping and don't force him. The amount of people saying the stitches force him it's incredible
I also feel like he genuinely smiled when talking to nifty and was crowned "king roach"
I read 2 thing on why he always smiles
1. Because it shows power and dominance
2. Because he promised his mum he’d never stop smiling before she died
Huh
It’s confirmed that he promised his dead mother to keep smiling no matter what (From the Fandom wiki)
That comes from the journey to the light wiki which is a fan made story
"confirmed" and "fandom wiki" don't work together because the fandom wiki was made by fans
@@KlutzOfAMan i think some fandom wikis are run by the creators but this comes from journey to the light so it is incorrect
Ah right okay thanks for clarifying, i've never been able to find that comic series
@@Ipennien
i think it is only a fandom wiki and not comics@@KlutzOfAMan
There was a second time his smile had stitches: at the end of stayed gone. The idea of all the atrocities he wanted to commit made him happy
Alastor mostly smiles cuz of his pride n some other things
I can agree that Alastor is smiling widely. It could be he had to use his power to keep it from tearing his face apart. But nobody is making him smile. He's practicing what he preaches. In his last song of the season, he is smiling out of habit to try to maintain any amount control.
Theoretically no offense, but in fact alastor that the smile is a sign of strength, that's why he always smiles
pretty sure his smile around rosie was also genuine since he seems to like her
He flat out says the smile has purpose. Rallies allies, terrifies foes, and the phrase "Face was made for radio" reinforces it.
I think he was also genuinely smiling when he was singing with Rosie🥰 best buddies
I thought you were going to talk about his smile with Mimzy that was an actual genuine authentic smile from Alastor
I'm pretty sure his smiles when meeting Rosie are genuine, since they are Friends
After his mother died he smiled through the tears and promised her that he’d never stop smiling in honor of her
Alastor *is* a mental breakdown
He’s laughed twice in the show and laughing as a sign of joy
Actually, he always smiled when he was alive. To him, a smile is a powerful tool to leave his enemy guessing. Plus, it's was confirmed that he hates frowning, so I dont think he can't frown, I think he doesn't want to under any circumstances
' SMILE! Your never fully dressed without out dear!" -alastor
His smiles in an around the "ready for this" song were pretty genuine in my opinion
I KNEW HE'S FUCKING SANS. EVEN WHEN HE'S HURT BY ADAM HE HAS SIMILIAR WOUND TO WHICH SANS HAAAAAD HOLY SH
This is overthinking 101. Even in Mimzy's flashback backstory retelling he was still smilin.
Oh I thought that it represented that the stitches are basically forcing his smile
"Haspin" LMFAO
Sir pentious getting thrown in the air for no reason-
