The Sansui's are great amps. I have the AU-719, finally finished restoring it.

A comparison would be integrated amplifier with integrated amplifier, and possibly also from the same year and from a similar quality series. An Accuphase with ‘1’ is the entry-level series. A sensible comparison here would be the Accuphase E-303x with the Sansui AU x11 - and I don't want to prejudge the result. But thanks for your efforts anyway.

    Quel bijoux ce AUX-11, j'en rêvais adolescent ! 🤩
Dommage que cette marque prestigieuse ait totalement disparu ! 🥲

listening through head phones i thought the Sansui sounded rather civillised , piano sounded nice on it. Did you notice any hiss where you did the testing coming through on the accuphase, seemed to be a bit pronounced to me. very good mate, interesting result.

Yeah - it's the recording, and also the cooling fan in my studio light. Of course the only way you can compare is to listen to the real articles.

I would go with the Accuphase

Were both recapped or restored ?
Did you level the gain on both so they are in the same page?
This could also make a big difference ?
    I have the Sansui AU-
719 and a very good and pleasant sounding amplifier .
    Thanks for your review.

Both have been serviced. The clips of them playing is not meant to be an A-B comparison - it's just to show them playing. Thanks for your comment! Glad you love your Sansui.

Great review. I grew up in the 70s era that revered Sansui but when I had the bucks later in life to afford one, newcomers had better offerings in integrated amps. I chose NAD and have stuck with the brand since.

Has the sansui or accuphase been serviced (recapped , etc.)?

you don't need the sansui if you add a tube preamp to smooth the accuphase out, or changing cables would work as well

They are both good, however this is where I run into problems with the room and speaker placement. Unfortunately there's nothing I can do about that.

    Hi Steven
    Nice review!
Fo you have any issue reconciling the fact that the amps are essentially 40 odd years old (I assume they have been recapped or maintained correctly )
    Your Jbl s probably similar…
Do you have any sense that you’re being denied any pleasure that newer designs may offer?
I too am running old gear, which can also sound great.. getting tempted to leave well enough alone in the knowledge that substantial improvement may need substantial amounts of cash..and what I have probably outshines anything I can afford..
    Cheers
    G

Thanks for watching and the comment. Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I would never be able to afford new gear that is anywhere in the same league as this used gear. For example, PS Audio Aspen FR20 speakers - AUD 38,000. The JBL L100 re-issue is AUD 9k. I would suspect my vintage JBLs would be better than that. For a long long time I stayed away from vintage gear because 1) I thought it was all going to explode within months. 2) I didn't think I would be able to maintain it myself. Both have proven false. Yes, sometimes a bit of effort is required to stay on top of things. But it's no different to servicing a car to keep it in good condition. So for me, the main reason I like vintage it because it allows me access to a segment of the market that I cannot access at new prices. If I had to buy something new, I'd probably give Klipsch RP-600Ms a go, even though I've never heard them. I'm not sure what I'd buy if I had to buy a new amp. TBH. I'd probably build one which is exactly what I did with the SYMEF.

I recommend building one of the old pass labs aleph amps-the aleph 5 is comparable in power to the accuphase….a commitment to build …but fantastic…..

Compare Class A with another Class A and both with the same continuous "rated" power capabilities.......also both single ended..or both bridged...
Only that will give a true comparison..

The point of the video is to compare two well regarded amplifiers that I have in my system. My channel is not a review channel. It's about my audio journey.

Class A operation, eliminating the crossover distortion of Class AB operated transistors, turning on/off, is not a subtle difference. Built, from circuit boards, Old Colony/Audio Amateur's, totally discrete, "Lang Amp". I employed a 10.8 Amp rated output stage, toroidal xfmr/channel, HEXFRED based bridge rectifier/channel, 375,000 uf of double bypassed, unregulated output stage capacitance, the input and driver stage of each channel had it's own toroid for a tightly regulated PS, Caddock metal film resistors on the MOSFETs source, etc.etc.. The article stated the amp transitioned into full Class A at 2 Amps of bias Current. But could safely handle 4 Amps of bias Current per output stage. So that is what I biased the MOSFETs for.
Listened to a CD while biasing from 0 Amps, slowly to 4 Amps of bias Current. Operating as Class AB, it didn't sound all that different from commercial AB amplifiers, but as the amplifier transitioned into Class A, the sound became extremely holographic, with a delicacy in the highs and a punchy powerful deep bass and a sense of the recorded acoustic space. Midrange timbral character had a very realistic, presence. Class AB power at the expense of crossover distortion, isn't worth it, at least in solid state. Today I listen through both Class AB, monobloc, OTL's based on the 6C19PI tube and a Class A SE OTL stereo amp, with about a tenth of the power of the AB OTL, and based on the EL 509 tube.
