If she was doing recon ariel photography, she was serving her country and community. What you are describing is a country house with a tennis court that had a grass lawn instead of what we know as a tennis court today. And yes croquet would have been played there also. Loved this reading. It was hard for strong minded young women with ideas and craving adventures to do nothing in WW1 and they were not wanting to marry at the time, remember that's when women were wanting equal rights and we are still fighting for that today. Those women were pioneers and pathways of how far we have come today. All Kudos and Thanks to them!

This fits soooo well. But I looked it up and Batten died in 1982. Tanya Chutkan was born in 1962.

Libby, I found a Janet Flanner, blonde woman who worked documenting during WWI.
Very interesting women - died in 1978, so too late for Chutkan ... but I do love the hunt

There is a tape of her talking about a small plane spinning at the Smithsonian website. She not English, and don't know if she had brothers, but she was VERY independent and set on flying. ?

Libby, I once had a colleague in the interfaith efforts in metro Detroit, whose given name was Samantha. Every time I saw her, the word “Judith” who was an ancient Jewish woman who fought off the enemy and is noted in the Hebrew Scriptures. Samantha in my time was a fighter for Justice among things, including keeping a synagogue downtown. She was murdered 2-3 years ago, and when I read the news, the first word out of my lips was Judith. I’ve never been able to explain why that happened.

Libby, I became aware of early Women Pilots, finding a neglected statue Memorial in Denton County Texas.. look into the WASP & WW1 Female pilots.. most flew supplies, equipment, to wherever needed. There were several who did *more.*

I have always been drawn to movies & documentaries about WW1-WW2, not the war stuff, exactly, but the societal SHIFTS.
I also have some post cards & diaries of Women from during that Era, that hint at these Women Loving other Women "Friends", more intimately than any male in their Lives (some were married) .. may or may not be significant here, but always seemed significant to me.

Google Janet Hendry. Her father asked her to stop flying when her brother was killed in a car accident. She then married. It’s a little later than WWI, though.
The "Janet" I'm after would've passed prior to 1950 ... I didn't see her pass at the time from the plane failure, so may have survived
