It has been several years now since I uploaded these videos, and I hope that you, and others, continue to enjoy them. I was hoping that someone who had a studio copy would have uploaded this concert in better quality by now, which has not happened, so perhaps my video is the only one that exists, since the station I recorded from has gone through other owners. If anyone has a better copy, could you please upload it? If there is none, then I am happy that I was able to preserve this for you, though all I had in 1990 was a 2 head VCR recording off air. I nearly missed it myself, having only just set the VCR before flying off to work. It's hard to believe that it has been 25 years. Had I not seen her in concert in Redlands, California the year before (1989), playing the Mendelssohn, her name might not even have caught my eye in the TV guide. I'm glad that it did, and that I caught this moment on tape. Enjoy.
+robotnik77 Thank you so much for having saved this historic musical moment, I have been enjoying this Leila girl violinist for the past 5 years at least !...
I have performed this and know it very well. I am also quite familiar with most recordings of this. Her playing cannot be matched by anyone. This is the best!!! She is the real deal!!!! I would love to have a student who will listen to me in order to play like this!!!! If only they would practice correctly and follow my advice.
Gracias por compartir esta joya,no hay palabras para destacar el extraordinario talento que manifiesta esta entonces niña prodigiosa, espectáculos como este es lo que hace inmortal la musica erudita ,bravo,👏👏👏
As a fellow violinist (who also plays this concerto) I can say that the tempo at which she plays it is right on; furthermore, this was a televized production to demonstrate the brilliance of both the performer as well as the composer and she executes it with a heap of musicall maturity! The concerto is a showpiece, after all. Listen to the greats play it, I have no criticism of this performance at all. She was a genius then and continues to be to this day!
Somewhere in my garage, I have a VHS recorded off the air from, I think, Channel 5 in Los Angeles. If memory serves, I attended this concert at the Hollywood Bowl. Prodigies come and go, but Ms. Josefowicz has had quite a career. I saw her perform the Salonen concerto a few years back. David Alan Miller, too, has done quite well as long time director of the Albany, New York Symphony. His recent recording of Symphonies by Harris and Gould was quite strong.
Leila Josefowicz!!!!! esta historica grabacion de tu! Vieuxtemps estan en mi vida desde q la escuche por primera ves , impresionante, gracias angel!!!!!
Today, she is a MacArthur Foundation Genius award winner. She is perhaps the greatest living proponent of contemporary classical music. She still possesses superlative tone and technique. Unfortunately, I think it is wasted on the music she choses to play, but she is nonetheless a true virtuoso, musical genius, as is evidenced by this performance.
This video has suffered some degradation since I first uploaded it in 2008. I don't know why, since it's all digital. When I first uploaded in 2008, it matched the DVD I had made from the original VCR tape. I can't re-do it since I no longer have equipment. So it is as it is, but it's only half the quality that it was. My apologies.
@@magnetiktrax Thank you. That must be the case, since when it was first uploaded, the audio and video were much sharper. Perhaps I can find the original CD I made from the tape in 2008, in my storage locker; but it's been years, so it would be like treasure if I were able to find it (I've lost, or discarded so much) - and the reason it was uploaded in 3 parts in 2008, was because TH-cam, at the time, could not accept a concerto-size upload.
I remember reading about her in a magazine when I was a kid. She was a teen at that time, I think. She seemed so wholesome back then! Maybe she still is, behind the edgy eye makeup and haircut she's always photographed in. In recent years, they've loved making classical musicians more edgy and cool-looking to counteract the stodgy reputation and to attract a broader audience.
@pmichael73 Yes, I'm sure you're right. Thanks for that insightful contribution. In my comment in clip 2, I did say that she was much more the Leila I love. Possibly by the 2nd/3rd movements, the super-hype has soften a bit, and she became much truer to her true musical self. Technically she is perfect, and like you said, it's the all-eyes-on-you-little-genius Hollywood-Bowl hype that produced that initial in-your-face bravado. Thanks for that.!
Who the hell dislikes this??? Pathetic! A 12 year old person playing this virtuoso piece this well is a myth. Look at the devotion......she is a musician pur sang.
Can't wait to see her coming to France, Aix-en-Provence Classical Musique Festival in summer. "Les Arts Florissants" booked out in 3 days... here? I al sure, Leila will book-out Aix-en-Provence in 24 hours. Anyone outthere to suggest her agent to simply "consider"... ??? This is the type of talent we need to show exist... beyond languages... ethnic origins... or political beliefs ..... is she in LinkedIn ? ... next time I write to Santa Claus, I will surely "add" her as the best-gift ever.
@ JiangxenPeter Your criticism falls a bit late. About 25 years so to speak. To criticise a 12 y.o. girl There is after all this time is almost necrologic. There is a lot of talent around, but I doubt if of her quality.
I know I'll get sniped for this but I must admit I'm a tad disappointed. Maybe the live recording's at fault. I've ALWAYS loved LJ, but I think this performance went way OTT!! HV, I think, would've preferred a more controlled rendition with due care & attention to dynamics, tone, orchestral partnership etc. Here is virtuosity for its own sake - which was not HV's philosphy. Technically Leila's impeccable even at 12! But perhaps it's the mature Leila whose persona & virtuosity I love. Sorry.
@8x3mhlk02 Well, the wonderful thing about democracy is that everybody is entitled to speak their mind, and more important, be allowed to express an opinion, whether valid, invalid, educated, informed or ignorant. And long may it be so!!! Your comment about mine is not helpful at all, but you're still allowed to make it. So, let's just leave it there, ok?
Omg...she sounds like Heifitz style ..and maturity...never knew that LF was this level of child prodigy....unbelievable!
If I were to shut my eyes and listen to this, I would would never guess a 12 year old was playing. Then again, this is Leila we're talking about.
Dear lord she’s such a wonderful player even at that age! What art

Thank you.

It amazes me not just her violin playing, but also her musical memory. I wish I could have a small part of that memory to do my exams!
She is an advocate for modern music. I think that is what she has been doing for the past couple years.
As a fellow violinist (who also plays this concerto) I can say that the tempo at which she plays it is right on; furthermore, this was a televized production to demonstrate the brilliance of both the performer as well as the composer and she executes it with a heap of musicall maturity! fantastic accompaniment from David Alan Miller as well he deserves a lot of credit for this performance.

Simply astonishing.
Epic playing!!

TH-cam probably recompressed it to save server space, or converted it to a different digital format, which always causes a drop in quality.

Wow awsome..
It's like she is running a clinic on violin awesomeness!
Her hands look so strong for a 12 year old, right? And one has to admire her talent ^.^
Geez, look at her stance with the legs. Now this is one 12 yo who means business...!
True; I thought the same thing!
