Yes that bottom would slow down any boat. Glad to see you're doing some sailing albeit frustrating. Often during the summer here on the East side of Vancouver Island the winds are like that; on-off. Sometimes there's a nice breeze and as soon as I hoist my main sail the wind dies... Grrr, drives me nuts. But nothing the Beta can't solve. Looking forward to next week's episode.

The ability to live simple, to travel and see the world, go and explore new places and cultures and to follow my own rhythm. Sometimes it works better than other times ☺️, but all in all it’s my preferred lifestyle.
JohnnyA i think that we did try quite a bit to sail...whenever the wind came up just a tiny bit, we rolled out the sails and shut off the engine. But sitting with flopping sales for hours is not good for the sails either. And since this was a coastal run and not an ocean passage, I find it okay pushing with the engine from time to time. But everybody has their own strategy / preference when t comes to that for sure...
@@WhiteSpotPirates I did not mean to criticize your strategy. I run the engine whenever there are light winds. It was a comment as a corollary to "Murphy's Law" , "if anything can go wrong, it will". Not sure if folks from Germany are familiar with this saying. Cheers.
JohnnyA aaah, I get u🤣. I thought u were being sarcastic. But it’s true...switching the engine on makes the wind freshen up, have experienced it many times. I tried it with putting on my rain gear to prevent the rain from coming but that strategy has not worked so well so far 🤣
Scrapping the barnacles , I am wondering since karl has twin keels , why no one has found a spot to let the Tide semi dry out the haul , so you can scrap them off . Then refloat at high tide . We used to have to practice the art of Careening her over on her side ( {single keel } not done much anymore ) BUT it works , one side at a time . One can even reapply anti fouling pain for most of the hull ( waterline to as far as you can go ) at the same time . It would sure help speed up Karl , if you have to move suddenly .
Klaus Jensen totally! Has been done before as well. But the effort of finding a suitable place, waiting for the right tide etc usually takes longer than a quick jump into the water. At least from my experience...(2h versus nearly a whole day to fall dry and refloat). But if u have other stuff to do on the hull or really heavy growth then it’s for sure worth the effort 👍

Just looked at the specifications on the BETA web site. Is it a BETA 30 ? If so running it at 2200rpm is the best spot for torque output and engine efficiency, just short of the top of the torque curve. At this RPM the engine functions at it's best. Sipping 1.5 litres/ hour. My 3hp Yamaha outboard uses more fuel/ hour. The more you use it the better, especially if you use it for long periods. Quality fuel and antifungal goop in the tank. I lived onboard a 110ft aluminium boat with two 6 cylinder Gardners. Lead fishing sinkers are your enemy.

One sure way to get the wind to blow a bit is to roll up the sails and turn on the motor.
