Sri Lanka elects Marxist-leaning Dissanayake as president to fix economy

- Anura Kumara Dissanayake has been declared the winner of the island nation’s presidential election, according to the Election Commission of Sri Lanka.
The Marxist-leaning Dissanayake, 55, leader of the People’s Liberation Front (JVP) party and leader of the National People’s Power (NPP) alliance, won the presidency with 42.31 percent of the vote in the election, the commission said on Sunday.
Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa took second place with 32.76 percent of the vote held on Saturday.
Outgoing President Ranil Wickremesinghe - who took office at the peak of the 2022 economic collapse and imposed tough austerity policies per the terms of an International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout - took a distant third place with 17.27 percent of the votes polled.
It was the first time in Sri Lanka’s history that the presidential race was decided by a second round of counting after the top two candidates failed to win the mandatory 50 percent of votes.
Dissanayake has promised to root out corruption, improve the lives of all and bring to book those he says robbed the country.
It’s an astounding change of fortunes for someone who polled just 3% at the last election in 2019.

In my opinion, some international media seem to be introducing him as a Marxist, but that is wrong because he is the leader of the National People's Power or NPP. Hence, he is responsible for implementing the “NPP Action Plan”. NPP is a front of patriotic citizens of all nationalities, and all members of NPP are progressive-minded, so they are moderate people with no extreme views.
He could be like the founder of modern China-the late Hon. Deng Xiaoping, who came from the Chinese Communist Party, Deng traveled around the world and learned a lot, especially from Singapore, studied the governance systems of other countries, and established a successful system with Chinese characteristics in China, and today China is the second largest economy in the world.
He is originally from the JVP, and the leader of the JVP which is a heavy Marxist party that even bombed its own government and army. This is factual.

@@Lakshane Thanks!It is too early to criticize the NPP because I need time for it, so I think it is fair to say something about the NPP after a year or two, so as a moderate citizen, I should be an observer. In my case, I focus on policies and how to implement policies for the benefit of the common people of my country, so there is no point in using idle words now.
As a citizen who lives with the people in the village, I personally know how people struggle to survive, so I have a good practical understanding of it. "The people of our village are really suffering!" So, like many people who love my Motherland, I also need time to observe/understand NPP programs, so I believe it is necessary to give them a chance. "Men should be judged by actions, not words"

That Jaffna guy didnt answer properly know did he make sense in certain areas. He must be against IMF. IMF did more than just help us pay dept. Paying the dept is not a choice, its something we have had to do. Also our economy is on the rise(in the 4%) and isn't contracting as he had mentioned. The bond holder discussion, those are done months ahead and not in the last minute. The uni he teaches needs to remove him, he's clearly clueless.

I’ve also read Marx’s views, as well as those of many other insightful thinkers, but that doesn’t mean I’m an extremist to Marxism or any ideology. Similarly, Anura Kumara Dissanayake is not an extremist either. While their political party has historical ties to Marxism and socialism, they are not dogmatic or extreme in their approach.
Before spreading misinformation, I encourage you to listen to their opinions and read their manifesto. The National People's Power movement led by AKD is built on a rich foundation of ideologies, including influences from Buddhist philosophy and other profound schools of thought. Their perspective balances socialism, democracy, individualism, and justice for all.
Rather than being tied down to any one extreme, they aim for an inclusive and prosperous future. This is their chance to showcase how their approach evolves the country for the better.

I thank goodness that I do not HAVE to live in this country. The JVP is not Marxist leaning but rabidly communist. Aljazeera is being charitable. They led two insurrections that killed hundreds of thousands of people. I am positive if they did actually come to power during those two they would have indeed exceeded the butchery of Pol Pot in Cambodia. and we would have been a communist utopia like (well sorry, I don't know). may be the new version has changed , as most people here seem to claim or hope . I dont know their economics now but we will surely find out. but at the time they focused on getting the money of the well to do . I am sure there will indeed be some of that happening . possibly by changing the taxation (now that they are in power) I think they most likely will try to negotiate with the IMF or possibly the bond holders . ( good luck bond holders !!!)
At the same time I feel that the country is tired of the status quo of the ruling families. and that is not a bad thing. when I was there a few weeks back I felt the desperation of the people. Many have a hard time paying for basic necessities. and they blame the politicians for that. but the truth is that Sri Lanka is overburdened by a beucrocracy that that does not work. They attempt to give everything free to the people. When that does not happen people turn on the politicians. To me having left the country during their last insurrection in 1989 I think this is the worst turn of events.
I hope for the country and many family and friend that live there I am wrong. but Time will indeed tell.
I also had the option to not have to live in this country. But CHOSE to live and work here as my love for the motherland was stronger than any unethical mindset to flee from the country and reject and criticise your own people and look down upon them when they are trying to bring back our own country. I am so proud and happy that I am with my people and in my country and indeed proud that even in the hardest economic situations, I would never ever say ‘I am happy if I am not here’
