    My comment on the slow but steadily dying business of discs sales: Maybe I'm the outlier, but I'm 72 and bought my very first movie disc of any type 15 months ago, and now have about 62 titles in my modest collection. I was early adopter of streaming and one day it dawned on me that to get best inherent value out of my big 4k hdr tv was to buy a player and watch blu-rays, hd and uhd. I'm very selective and only buy titles I know I'll watch several times more. I've seen thousands of movies over the decades and can really hone in on my personal favs. So don't give up on the baby boomer/older generation helping to keep physical alive.

    Great interview! Frank's transparency and honest take on things make for a great listen. His comments on not appreciating the intentional Blu-ray-then-4K double tip tactics "as a consumer" are particularly appreciated. (Also: really looking forward to Ronin and Needful Things on 4K!)

    My own theory regarding why some titles sell better than others (particularly the example of Space Camp outselling Cry Freedom) is that I think a lot of titles sell from their nostalgic connection with us. How did they make us feel? In particular, do we associate good memories with them?
    While Cry Freedom is undisputedly an important film, it's not gonna bring back memories of hanging out with friends and munching popcorn and being entertained - like Space Camp would make you feel.

    Looks like Columbo comes out in November. I had pulled the trigger on the Import blue ray set last year (200 bucks) but still I"m going to buy the Kino set. This is truly great stuff, Heath. Tarzi sure gives me the impression of being someone I’ve had run ins with on forums and at least for me never scored much for likability. But in this situation his forthrightness and candor comes across much better because you can clearly recognize the earnestness behind it. Such are the inherent drawbacks of online anonymity in potentially volatile venues. Here in this much more personalized situation though, prompted by your own knowledge and enthusiasm, Heath, this interview could have gone another couple of hours plus and I would still be invested in it. I hope he returns for Round 3.

    Heath, was Frank saying he's going to repackage the FILM NOIR sets so that some of the sets would be together? Like sets I, II, and III in a slipcase? He sort of broached the subject and then didn't get back to it.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I believe he was wondering if fans would be interested in previously released noir films that had not been packaged together to get bundled as future box set volumes. Kino has released many dozens of noir outside of their “Dark Side of Cinema” box sets, and he was considering mining those for future boxes.

    Heath - Thank you SOoooooo much for having Mr. tarsi again ! I loved the first interview and this was more of the same great , honest insightful discussion in the industry and what’s up now with Kino !! loving it !!
    I picked up all 3 Blu ray reissues for Night Gallery and both seasons of Outer Limits …. And just got in The Marathon Man …… Kino has been hitting home runs out of the park with their work .
    Agree with the joint assessments from you both: I got the limited edition Four Flies on Grey Velvet via Severin on Black Friday ; did it with a few other sale items , and I got everything on a per disc basis for a great price - have since seen numerous fans on TH-cam blasting Severin (an even smaller operation than any major company) for gouging on the price despite the release being a 4 disc set , for a very rare film only hard core fans had an interest in. I couldn’t understand the anger - it costs to produce, much as Frank has indicated (as have you.) Kino has done a great job with providing value , as have so many others .
    Maybe you could do an episode on explaining the costs of producing blu system and 4ks to educate us and other fans ?? I studied graphic design and know the slip cover for the FFoGV alone had to be expensive , just based on the heavier card stock , ink , special ink / coating ….. and mass producing even for a limited run . I don’t think the average fan realizes the costs - you’ve said it yourself so many times , a studio is going to gauge sales based on how sale on one format are to justify a 4K or extended versions .
    Super episode !!!!
