Nice analysis here! This is a rare occasion where I can go either film winning best picture because they're both amazing. They're both in some cases a horror movie because they display some of the most brutal ways of showing the dark side of humanity and also having two of the most iconic characters in movie history. Both Plainview and Chigurh are dangerous men and scary because these are the kinds of evil that exist. I really love both movies and I'm glad they both receive the treatment as being equals not just that they were filmed in the same locations but because they were masterpieces in their own craft.

It's apples and oranges which one you prefer, I personally think There Will Be Blood is the better and has aged like a fine wine, I can see why at the time the Oscars for best picture went to no country but I feel over the years more people now prefer There Will Be Blood, both good films
Fun fact: this 65 year old female sometimes struggles to find ways of connecting with her 35 year old son. These two movies have given the two of us hours of conversation on the phone. He has almost convinced me to view “ Gangs Of NY!” 😁

Funny story, my mother met Tommy Lee Jones at a bar when filming No Country for Old Men. She lived in Balmorhea and that was near where they filmed.

Just watched there will be blood a couple days ago. Can’t believe I had never seen it before. It’s definitely a masterpiece.

What about “True Grit?” Nearly verbatim for both adaptions. Both movies leave out Maddie’s diatribe on the Presbyterian factions and Cohen brothers add the guy hanging high and the creepy “dr” in the bear skin with the dead guy. Have you compared these two movies? I love the book and both movies. My favorite character is the flustered auctioneer. I LIVE Struther Martin in this role. Also, both movies have very crisp deliveries of lines. The “voice” in these movies is unique. Interesting they both have it. I think Cohen bros honored the first movie. Of course, endings differ but I l like John Wayne’s “one-eyed fat man” jumping the rail! Epic storie well done in film.

I believe Daniel Day-Lewis is the greatest actor to ever live. His performance in “There Will Be Blood” is one of the best performances of all time, second only to himself in “Lincoln” in my opinion. Love your podcast btw guys, my favorite rn.
