I would highly recomend Lost Canvas. States one holy war during XVIII century, which happens every 200 years, between Athena and Hades.
This story has nothing to do with the Netflix series "knights of the zodiac", is a different but better history. Every protagonist has it own charisma, you will feel like watching Agame Ga Kill... worth crying.

Eren’s “forgiveness” is scarier than his rage ever was
Anger is the frustration at the unknown, Eren back then didn’t know why 3 little kids from the outside world would want so much horror on his people, his life so he rage against their injustice. However, now when he understand everything, there is literally no more wood to fuel his anger, he accepts everything, accept his undeniable role as a demon and pushes forward

A lot of american politicians went into panic mode because they thought there was an actual declaration of war.
fun fact : The titan war that happened 100 years ago was supposed to have a full volume this year. But the author said it's a lot of work, and he doesn't want to make his whole story incoherent because of a mistake he'll make in the volume about the war 100 years ago. I think we'll have to wait a little longer before we can see this war and King Fritz.
Don't forget the law of the royal blood. Eren can't access the memories and the power of the Founding Titan without royal blood. Eren can't, technically, activate the Rumbling in Marley.
Marley might think he can though, since Bertholdt and Reiner witnessed him turn the titans against them in the season 2 finale.

@@mategido Because you'll end up in the way of the Rumbling, and you'll be attacked and destroyed without any time to defend, before the Rumbling arrive. It's not a good idea to make this on an ennemy territory. And i have to mention they don't even know what will truly happen if they do it. That's why it's clever to not do it in Marley.

When it comes to the conversation between Reiner and Eren, there are several ways that you can interpret it that foreshadows a lot that happens later on in the show, especially when it comes to character motivation that I feel a lot of people easily miss out on the first watch.
At the start, we see Bertolt talking about wanting to be judged, and this applies to Reiner. Reiner feels the guilt of the horrible things he's done on Paradis and once he is back home, he keeps getting rewarded for it, for being a 'hero'. His guilty conscious suffers more from it, when all he really wants is to be punished for the things he has done, things that he knows were wrong. When he sees Eren, he expects Eren to deliver that punishment onto him, but he doesn't. Instead, Eren is compassionate towards him and even shows some sympathy. Reiner, expecting Eren to deliver him some judgement, asks Eren if he is going to kill them all like he said he would, but Eren cringes at his old self and instead just gives Reiner an out almost mockingly, telling him that if he 'did it to save the world, then he didnt really have a choice'. Reiner finally has enough and tells Eren that his true motivations were selfish, where people around him see him as an honorable warrior who fought the island devils, in reality he went so he could be a hero, so he could be admired and be with his parents.
Instead of Eren getting mad and bashing him for it, Eren simply says the same thing again that they 'are the same', and this is what Eren was truly getting at. There are two ways that you can interpret this conversation, one is the literal and the obvious meaning that Eren came here across the sea just like Reiner and pals did, but the more subtle meaning is that Eren and Reiner both had their own motivations for coming here, motivations that were selfish, different from the more righteous reasons than the people around them, and yet they still went through with their plans. This is further supported when Eren says 'dont you get it?' because Reiner truly does not understand what he meant during their conversation. As you watch you'll see exactly what I mean about Eren **
** SPOILER: Eren's motivations are also selfish, and his motivations are not entirely for his friends like he tells everyone around him. His true motivation is to obtain that freedom that he saw in Armins book, that dream he has always had as a kid.
A funny thing that happened when this episode first aired, was that #declarationofwar trended globally...just a few days after that January 6 Capitol insurrection, and caused some panic to those who weren't following the show.
The parallels they paint with Reiner and Eren are so well written, as well as the calmness and understanding Eren shows added with the chaotic situation they paint outside of Reiner and Eren just makes for an amazing build up. Such an incredible episode!
Regarding the question you asked at the end, answering is tricky.
I personally believe that the vast majority of people just want to live decent lives and don't have any interest in going to war against anyone. They get pulled into wars either by people like a certain man who's name begins with P, or out of necessity due to some external factor (like a famine). Then the ones who are attacked are forced to fight back.
WW 1 was the most extreme version of this, a war that nobody wanted (including the leaders) and quite possibly one of the greatest tragedies ever with only losers on all sides.
There is also one line from the anime Youjo Senki that is so damn good, "Everyone wants peace, so they all go to war in order to achieve peace. There can be no greater paradox".
In this case It's people thinking that another nation will become a threat to them so they go to war against it pre-emptively.
But to get back to the specific question you had, the only way an external common enemy would unite people is if it is absolutely impossible to reason or negotiate with in any way whatsoever.
I got an IRL example of this: Space.
The various people who are together on the ISS have to work together regardless of what their countries are doing and what politics are in play on the ground, because space is absolute, lethal, and completely unforgiving (and also impossible to reason with).
If an entity can be reasoned or bargained with, someone will do that. Only when such things become completely impossible will people be forced to unite in the true sense.
However, here's the important part (as I see it). It has to be possible to achieve something by cooperating.
If it's not, then it won't unite people the same way.
Lets say a force of nature comes along (like a tornado). You can't do anyting against it whatsoever, you can only run.
However if you are attacked by an eldritch horror, and you know that its going to kill everyone and everything if you don't defeat it, and you know that running or talking is pontless but fighting it is possible, that's another story.
Of course, everyone involved would need to understand these facts for it to work. Also, even in this scenario there would be scumbags who tried to use the situation to their advantage. Because evil people will always exist (and this is why there will always bee a need for heroes to oppose them).
So to sum up, yes it could probably put an end to war between nations, but not to conflict between individuals.
Marley would have eventually tried to invade and infiltrate the walls to take the Founding Titan even if Eren wasn't around, because military advancements in the world would overwhelm Marley soon (since they've been overly reliant on Titan shifters). Additionally, the island has a valuable resource. Eren obtaining the Founding Titan merely accelerated the events.
I think it's important that there are colossal titants in the walls - the CT has always been coded as a metaphor for the nuclear bomb (a VERY relevant picture in japanese memory as you can imagine). So the millions of CTs waiting dormant to destroy all of humanity on the whim of a single madman is a very poiniant metaphor for the nuclear threat we all live under since the beginning of the cold war.
I love how you actually pause the episode to talk about things that were just said instead of just letting it run to give us your thoughts before they might get lost during the rest of the watch session.

A detail to keep in mind that the manga does explain at this moment but the anime does not tell it: all the fear that Marley's authorities have about Eren is mainly due to what happened in episode 2x12, where Reiner and Berthold were witnesses how Eren was able to use the power of the Coordinate (that is, the Founding Titan) to order pure titans to attack those Marleyan Warriors.
Neither Reiner nor Berthold knew that the pure titan with whom Eren had contact was Dina Fritz, a member of the Eldian royal family, so they assumed that Eren had managed to master all the powers of the Founding Titan, something they immediately told their superiors, which is why which when they confront the Scouts again, Marley not only sends them both again but also reinforces them with the Beast Titan and the Cart Titan.
Nah …Beast titan, cart titan and people from Marley were already there in paradise starting from s2
I think that’s the whole reason why Reiner told that he was the armored titan so suddenly because Marley had enough of time wasting and that is why they send zeke ,pieck and others to finish the job quickly
And when Reiner and berthold saw beast titan they were shocked

@@AM17titan My comment does not negate what you say. It is true that Marley was getting impatient and wanted results, so they temporarily sent the Beast Titan and the Cart Titan, but on missions that we could call reconnaissance.
However, Marley was not at all interested in having witnesses from Paradis of that presence, especially that of the Cart Titan and that of the Marley military personnel who accompanied them.
The first real battle sought by Marley was to order three of his Warriors to await the arrival of the Scouts in the abandoned Shiganshina district, to ambush them and kidnap Eren to obtain the Founding Titan.

i feel like the death of a child to a radical who has an enemy to point at will almost always default to blaming that enemy so they can shield themselves from the guilt. Sometimes it clicks and they change but often pain leads to further radicalization. Or alternatively Bertolt's father couldn't change his beliefs openly without possibly execution so while he may have changed he had to keep up a front to not be accused of being anti-marley
I think the scaroest thing about this episode is that even though Eren learned the same thing that Reiner did that inside the walls and across the same everyone is the same, Reiner learned this long after attacking Paradis. Eren learned this after being in Marlet for a while and STILL decides to attack Marley even though he knows that there are good people in Marley and kills the innocent civilians in the apartments above when he transforms.
Eren learned the lesson but straight up did not learn anything lmao

I like how in the play all the people representing titans are blindfolded, I guess meaning they are blinded by the memories of past titans.
Reiner (back in season 2): I don't know what right any more. But as a warrior, I will see through the mission to the bitter end!
Eren: I will keep moving forward until my enemies are destroyed!
So viewers know that Reiner chose to continue with his mission even after understanding everything. That he was lied to about Eldians on Paradis Island. That wall Eldians were just people, and took Reiner in as one of them. That destroying the wall and having wall Eldians being eaten by titans was a morally unforgivable act.
What does Eren mean 'we are the same'? Certainly, their circumstances have many parallels. But here, Eren learns that the similarity goes all the way down to choosing to commit terrible acts in full knowledge how unforgivable it is. That's why Eren's handshake with Reiner is really chilling - Eren is thanking Reiner because Reiner didn't leave Eren as the sole evil actor.

This line and this episode makes so much sense in rewatch after finishing the final episode

I just watched yesterday Letters from Iwo Jima that you recommended (thanks a lot for the recommendation, I loved the movie even though it is hard to watch), then I proceeded to read a bunch of stuff about it because I wanted to know how many survived, died etc. Then I seen some stuff about Japanese culture at time, I think reading about it helped me understand how parents of warriors in SnK would feel proud and shit, I mean of course it is mostly cognitive dissonance denial and sunken cost falacy, but culture would play a huge role there thinking that there is honor and greatness and fucked up shit.
Yeah, LtIJ is really hard to stomach but a brilliant movie =( It gives a lot of insight into Japanese culture, though I think (grenade scene for exapmle).
When you talked about a person that the whole world hates, I thought of the painter, as you like to call him. But then I thought, that is only because history is written by the winners; why doesn't the whole world hate other entities that are historically known for committing atrocities, like the ones against the indigenous people of America for example.. so why does everyone "hate" the painter specifically..? There are atrocities committed today against certain peoples, they're immensely documented and plainly happening in front of the whole world's eyes, yet there's debate about them and not everybody "hates" the entities involved in said crimes... Are we sure that if the devil appeared, everyone will stand against it?
Because I was born into this world is eren's words if we are going by who said it first in episodes. It was his mothers words to him as well
Masterpiece episode
The difference between the Colossal titan shifter and the colossal titans in the walls is that the shifter was towering over the wall titans. Plus, we see from the one exposed wall titan that they are actually a bit shorter that the actual wall, so the difference in size is even greater. There's also the fact that titan shifters in general are just smarter and more in control of their powers.
the colossal titan inside the walls ( wall titans ) and the normal colossal titan transformed by armin and berthold are of the SAME HEIGHT
its just that the wall titan's foot is INSIDE THE GROUND
theres a whole explanation to this in S1 EP25 AFTER CREDITS where a miner actually found out about this but military police killed him before he could make public
while armin and berthold can control the colossal shifter on their own will
on the other hand the wall titans cant be controlled and they are mindless just like pure titans and can be controlled only by the FOUNDING TITAN (eren has the power but he cant activate since he needs the key which is zeke who has ROYAL BLOOD)

24:05 it's less of eren putting himself up as the bad guy and more like eren now sees that by series of cascading shitty events, regardless of his intentions or inner thoughts, he is currently in the position of the bad guy...and as he said he feels like he has no choice but to keep moving forward, until he's defeated (destroyed) his enemies

I'd love to hear your opinion on some of the songs of the AOT soundtrack like Vogel Im Käfig or the first song in the attack on titan suite since they are in German and you might have insight about the meaning that isn't in the translation :)
It is very misunderstood and may ppl get distracted from what Willy Tibur is doing here. He is saying what is convenient for him of the truth. Eren is not of Royal blood. Though this means he is not bound by the anti war vow, he cannot fully access the founding titan's power, the rumbling/collosals within the walls unless he touches a titan of royal blood. Simultaniously Marley had been at war with other nations because they lost other titans, and to Paradis in that sense. They had become the bullies of the world like Eldians did in the past. So to divert the hate from them and erase the only valid contender to ther military and world monopoly (Paradis) and access their resources, his speech was geared towards this. Izayama (the mangaka) showed a brilliant example of politics, political campaigns and propaganda. Which at its core is story branding. So Marleyans as well as the Tiburs which are Eldians who are truly the enemy, have been geared towards hating Paradis, which now are peaceful and know nothing of it and their ancestors are LONG gone. All so they can keep their power and influence. Very disgustingly real and human.

I always find it unfair to consider that everyone hates the devil, because I like to think of him as a hero who dared to say no to the ultimate power knowing that he can't win but chose to forever represent people's freewill and be blamed for everyone's else wrong doing, of course it's all a myth but still very interesting
Yeah, depends on what you understand "god" as. Depending on that, lucifer has a poitn sometimes. Though I think that is also where the difference between lucifer (fallen angel rebelling) and the devil (pure "evil") stems from. =)

Some of these might be Porco's family. (I can't remember how they looked like in the episode 4x02.)
I can't see Zeke's grandparents here. And none of them looks like Pieck's father to me.
Perhaps some of these might be the family members of _previous_ warriors -- those who had been eaten 11 years before by Reiner, Bertholdt, Annie, Pieck and Marcel.
Man, you're not totally dumb... far from it.
I have to say, you're one among very few reactors who better grasp the plot, and the deep psychology behind it, on their first view of this show.
