After watching this review and reading the seemingly minimal information on this smoker, I chose this over the Pitboss Series 5, and the Pitboss Brunswick. I felt this one seems to be of a better build and overall appearance. Picked up at a local Home Depot This is when I discovered this was a heavy unit, Got home, and put it together. I am not a handyman so I was leary when trying to put it together. Well, it took me about 90 minutes or so, I must admit it was awesome that all the screw holes lined up perfectly. No need to McGever the build. Ony issue and I may check today, but it seemed they did not mention installing the rails for the drip pan. Was able to do this at the very end as there was room to complete this from the bottom. So once completed I would have to say the build quality was excellent. When you push it on the castors it had a very solid feel . Well, I was in the garage and decide it was time to turn it on, set up wifi, and to do the first burn. Plugged an extension cord off a surge protector and hit the power button. No power! Before I could use my special occasion words, I decided to pug the extension cord directly into the wall to the 1400. As I plugged it in I heard a wonderful chime from the machine, It was up and running. I downloaded the app and the connection was pretty much instantaneous and no issues. WEnt to prime and I think it took about 4 or 5 "prime cycles" to hear the pellets coming into the burn pot. I then did a 30-minute burn at 300. I did notice a little too much smoke coming out the door so I will adjust the latch today. I know in the video one of the cons was the lack of a cover designed for this unit. I have secured 4 covers made for the Pitboss and I have heard they should work. I will be testing each of them today and returning the others. But I would like a branded one. So far based on the design, build quality, and such I believe this is a solid build and a good purchase. Also, a unique feature this has is the ability to automatically place the smoker to "warm" mode once the internal temp. matches the requested temp. There was a post made somewhere where the content creator indicated his burn pit stopped working. I saw this the night before purchasing mine.I normally do not buy warranties, but I opted to purchase the 2-year extended warranty. I hoped this helped in your research on choosing a smoker.
Thanks for the comment! I’ve got my replacement model today. And I did a live stream for assembly. Please check it out. Please like and subscribe! Plenty of cooks coming!
I've been watching this for the last couple of days. You're the first person I've found that has given an actual report on this smoker. I went to Home Depot yesterday and they had one sitting on the floor set up. I like the fact that the controls are up top and easy to get to. I agree with you about the pellet hopper. Instead of thinner for more chamber space perhaps shorter so the clean out door would be higher off the ground. I like how they have little nubs to ensure the heat deflector placement. I agree with you on the number of probes. You give us four ports give us four probes. Also the cover issue is a sore spot with me. I walked further down the aisle at Home Depot and found an after market cover that would work. The other thing I saw that I liked was where they put the internal cabinet temp probe up on the left side. Easier to get to for keeping it clean for more accurate temp readings. The thing that concerned me on first inspection was the gasket seal on the door. It looked pretty thin. I'll be interested in your follow ups on the smoker as to smoke leakage. As far as leaving the pellets in the hopper, Ican honestly say I've never had a problem. I'm currently running a Pit Boss series 3 Copperhead and never had a problem. The lid on the hopper is designed to channel water away from the hopper and secondly I keep the smoker covered with its all weather cover. I live in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. I live in an apartment and my smoker sits on my patio 24/7. Wind, rain, snow no matter sun, cloudy or fog has never affected that smoker in three years. It reminds me of the old Timex watch. She takes a licken and keeps on ticken. The big reasons I'm looking at this Nexgrill is price point and that controller. What I can't find, yet, are stainless mesh racks, the same exact size as the grill racks for when I do jerky. I have six that fit my Series with brackets for two more. Amazon has them out of stock right now and have been for some time. My last batch was 5.3 pounds raw sliced beef. Six racks full. I'm going to subscribe as I want to see you do more with this new grill. Before In forget, you mentioned lining the grease pan with foil. More importantly, do not forget to line the water pan. Sorry for the long chat.
Oh no need to be sorry! And yes, thank you for the hint about the water pan! I have it lined with foil also. Thank you for the sub! Any tips you want to say please do in the comments! People like you are the reason I made this review to get information out there about the 1400! Welcome to the channel and see you around the grill!
Great video! I went to home depot to buy this, but changed my mind once i started reading the reviews. Was going to buy a traeger & spend 3x as much but decided to wait to do more homework. You really messed me up with the "I gotta ask my wife if i can buy/smoke a brisket" lol. Busting balls! Your a good man, go get you a brisket and smoke that thing in your new smoker!!
@@BosBackyardBBQ Yea i felt like an idiot once i saw you gave up on it! That sucks cause it really does seem like a good unit! Thx for all your info man!
Im sorry you have issues with this smoker. Ive had absolutely zero issues with mine, and have been slaying ribs in it. Gonna try beer can chicken in it next weekend.
Mine had an issue where the fire pit failed. But I’m going to exchange it for the exact same model. I just got it about a week ago so I’m not going to give up on it.
I got one of these and ran it for the first time today. It ran fifty degrees below the set temperature and the temperature probes gave me inaccurate readings too. The only reason I knew it was running cool was sticking an oven thermometer in it. All my tri-tip came out super rare. It may be just teething problems but I am disappointed with it so far.
I am having the same issues with my last 2 cooks, going fine then randomly start slowly dropping temp. I’m changing pellets for one more chance before it’s return time as well.
Just dropped you a sub since I know you from the group. Always down to support a friend. Also, start with a chuck roast to work your way to brisket... it's a good way to get used to the stall and estimate cook times. Another thing that worries me is the fact that the burn pot is open on the sides, and that bottom is also the grease drip tray... that screams chamber fire risk to me. Keep us posted on how it does though.
I’ve had temp issues myself the first time but after I put more than 40 lbs of pellets in it seems to hold within 5°. maybe it’s somehow drawing more air through the auger with less pellets? but I haven’t had a problem since.
@@BosBackyardBBQI hope so. I’ve haven’t had it very long but I’ll try different things to either confirm or disprove my experience so far. the only other thing I can think of that might make a difference is the amount of food I had in it. first time was 2 pounds of drumsticks. everything else after was 7lbs pork butt and a few racks of ribs or somewhere around that much.
Was cooking a pizza on the "HIGH" setting. Fee minutes into the cook > got a ER3 code indicating the temp got over 500 (which is setting for the smoker side got over 575. Is this a human error perhaps or a faulty controller panel not to turn off. If was odd because the app was showing the temp to be 125 and the. Within a minute or two the temp flipped up to 480.
@@BosBackyardBBQ So far I did a pork tenderloin and some chicken legs and thighs. Works much better than my Masterbuilt Electric smoker. Will try a pork butt this weekend.
I've run into the same issue with the 790 , unit lost temp and shut down twice on 16 hour cook. Smoke also coming out of the bottom . Thanks for the video , thought it was just me
The temps varied greatly. As low as 180 to as high as 500 and then throwing a error code. Then doing a shut down, after cooking for three hours. If someone has the model and it works for them, I’m very happy that it is.
I’ve had many issues with this. Pellets stop feeding into the auger. The Slope isn’t designed right. I had to use rotisserie motor and rod in the pellet hopper to keep them feeding
My problem is that purchasing this pellet smoker confirmed what others have said about pellet smokers. Doesn't have an acceptable smoke penetration or flavor to the meat. Meat produced on it tastes like something cooked in a kitchen oven and artificial smoke flavoring added.@@BosBackyardBBQ

So true! I’m studying up on the subject and watching Smoke’s videos and others to learn all that I can!
How does one clean out the ash pot? I'm researching between this and the Pit Boss Pro 1077, both at the $500 price point.

It says it bakes. How do I bake turkey legs in it?
