Question. Do concept artists at AAA companies still paint and draw for character concepts? I'm asking because I've been in deep study with digital painting and sketching. Taking several drawing, digital painting, etc classes online the past year and a half. I wanted to know if I should start learning more 3d like Z-brush, Blender, Daz studio etc. I'm interested in characters and creatures.
The process has certainly evolved over the time. Especially since the time photobashing / kitbashing has been introduced into the world of digital art. To increase efficiency and productivity and also realism in character (or any) concepts in general would definintely require you take the a photo/3d route. With that being said. Yes ! From what I have seen. Many artists do use photos/3d assets in their concepts to enhance realism and quicken up the workflow. But at the same do overpaint/sketch as well. I tend to do that a lot too. As you can see in my videos. So please continue learning digital painting and sketching as it is a great skill to learn even in modern times but also try incorporating a bit of 3d / photos into your workflow as it will greatly help in increase the efficieny of the work and will take the realism up a notch. Hope that answer helped. 🙏
