The joy in life comes from discovery, the wisdom in life comes from refinement. The hardest part for me in this hobby is figuring out the distinction between liking/loving a particular watch vs. wanting to own that watch.

I've learnt the very hard way that buying pieces to fill the crave isn't the way. It forces me to go back to the ones I really want anyway.

Absolutely true, I had the same experience.
It's better to wait 1-2 years, save up some more money, and then get the watch you truly want instead of settling for alternatives.

100%. I trimmed down my collection by 4, and got myself a BB58. Bang it on the jubilee and it's a winner.
I still want the BB Chrono, Pro and 58 GMT long term. But I'll wait on the former two until the movements are slimmed down.

Thank you for using my suggestion for a whole show! I agree with all of you on pretty much everything you mentioned. Thomas said something great that is what I’m now following, that I collected in waves, lots of watches at first but now switching to the desire that it’s better to have a 3-5 watch collection to actually spent time and bond with the watches. So while many affordable watches was good to start and get me into the hobby, fewer better quality watches is where I’m ending up. I used to buy cheaper pre-owned watches, sell them and move on to experience more watches/brands. While I didn’t lose much money (or even made some money) it’s the eBay fees that kill 15% of any sale revenue. That’s the part that has really driven me away from buying/selling anymore.

Buying many seems impractical to me as it typically increase the Total Cost of Ownership (primarily maintenance cost) and Diminishing Returns (fetching less and less resale value to fund that new watch) over long term for a collector. Trying not to be influenced by marketing and social media, I now exercise discipline and aim only to splurge on that one special piece once a while when situation permits. Wish me luck! 😅

I (try to) do the same every 2-3 years. I’ve only bought brand new as well, this way I never have to have them serviced. Although I see the Speedy I have now stay for a longer term.

As to maintenance cost, if you’ve purchased your watch within the last 15 years you do Not need to service at any set intervals especially if the watch is not worn everyday and is part of a larger rotation. Newer watches use synthetic oils that do not gunk up, degrade, or evaporate like older mineral oils. Periodically check them on a timegrapher and if the amplitude is between 230-315, small beat error, not running too fast or too slow then there is absolutely No reason to submit the watch to an intervention that may ultimately introduce issues that were not originally present.

To be honest, I splurge a bit on very affordable watches that are constantly being rotated (flipped) at the same time I curate a core collection that is relatively stable.

Everyone agrees that you should save up, but it’s a hobby driven by passion and curiosity. All saving and no splurging can kill the joy of watches.

For me I have 9 watches in my collection but I’ve been a watch enthusiast for 40 years.. 4 are vintage that I bought new or had as gifts from parents 1 is a toy moonswatch snoopy and and the other 4 are what I would say are my main collection… 1 Tudor 2 omegas and a breitling… I’m very happy with the diversity of my collection and maybe there will be 1 more some day … I’ve only ever sold 2 and that was a Rolex gmt master 2 tone on jubilee from 2003 and a Tudor GMT Pepsi .. maybe I’m just not a gmt guy

I've sold watches and regretted it. Now, it's going to cost me three times the cost to purchase the same watch but newer. Rule of thumb, don't sell if you really like the watch even if you don't wear it as much.

Guilty! I’m one of those Santos 2823 buyers who messaged Daan 😂
Knew of the watch before I saw him posting and always liked it. However, his constant posting made me pull the trigger.
I think the 2823 looks better in steel. It’s too big and chunky in two tone. The Carree 2961 looks better in two tone. Would love to add one of those as well.

Had the Cartier Santos Galbée 2823 and sold it for the Cartier Santos Galbée 2319. Which is a little smaller, better proportions, and doesn't have that horrible four o'clock date. I just couldn't get over the four o'clock date on the 2823. Once you see it, You can't unsee it.

Firstly, splurging to me means you are spending a larger amount of money. My tactic is that I started curating my 20-piece set quite rigourously, and now I save up to sometimes splurge on an upgrade. For instance, slot number 20 is reserved for a Reverso. Most of us straddle the middle ground in one way or another.
Regarding Thomas Grand Seiko: of course you can sell it. Circumstances, decisions, and opinions all change. I think that sticking to a decision you now regard as bad is ultimately not very intelligent.

Save up for the ultimate grail watch. We all realise through the way of the long watch journey and approach the inevitable life phase of narrowing down to that one grail watch.

Love the new 222, next to the cash would be the question, when/where would and could i wear it. Even do i love it, it should also fits your life. So spend up to the point you see yourself using the watch.

I have 3 planet ocean ultra deep.
... i had the never ending urge to buy 1 more... now i have variations i feel complete for a while anyway.
Everyone has their sweet spot where they feel comfortable on the number in their collection.
I will keep these for two years id say then move them on for something newer.
    For me they are perfect.
    Enjoy everyone and happy hunting.❤

Splurge on many expensive ones. Sell. Repeat.

Splurge on many - find the sizes/style you like - sell most (View the loss as an educational cost).. and then buy the ones you really want.

Great discussion. I think it comes down to the individual: how badly do they really want that 1 grail? If that’s the only watch they’re really interested in, maybe just save and look at their smartphone until they have the money? Do they have the time and patience to sell other watches? And what if they aren’t good at taking care of their watches and beat them up so badly they aren’t worth anything?

For years I only had 2-3 watches, then I had one watch for about 7-8 years (an Oris). I I bought a Seiko Cocktail Time and then it snowballed. Along the way I've bought the icons, but also bought a lot of other stuff along the way. There are watches I haven't worn in 6 months or more so now I feel the need to downsize. So this year's goal is to halve the collection.

if we are trying to find some shred of fiscally responsible spending choices in watch collecting...we will be here for a month of Sundays without arriving at any logical conclusion. Splurge on whatever deeply touches your emotions and never look back. Even if that means your children may have to fend for themselves in the realm of hunting and gathering for sustenance.

I think there’s different seasons in your journey. I think of it as being a disciplined purchaser versus a spontaneous purchaser. Both can be very rewarding.
The concept of collecting is highly overrated. One person will say you need to have these different categories of watches. I never wear a shirt and a tie, but I might consider using a dress watch casually? Anyway, buy what you love and don’t be too hard on yourselves.
He who can be patient and disciplined will be rewarded with something you cannot obtain otherwise. The self control is the way a person can have something more special and they would otherwise be able to own.

@@chaosad4508 Maybe, but its a fact that he helped thousands get into the watch hobby, in the last decade, before watch youtubers were fashionable. Before most would buy one good watch, he educated us to buy a whole collection of them, thanks to him the Swiss watch industry sold many more watches.

Nobody should be splurging for aliexpress watches or watches made by ego maniacs like TGV
