i had a gap of 55 years. I came back to myself through painting a few years ago and took a break last year when my vision deteriorated. I will return to the studio in October after my final cataract surgery. I find such joy and passion pushing paint around. It is such a large part of my spiritual practice and provides a space for me to work out ideas and issues in my world. I am very grateful for paint.

This stream made me teary haha. Ive always wanted to try art as a little kid but my family just didnt have the resources to buy me the materials or even enroll me to those summer art workshops. Ive always just put myself as an admirer of art because I didnt have the experience and the practice so ive only started trying last year because of the pandemic.
I'm 23 now, working, earning my own money, able to finally splurge on art mediums and materials I want to try. Took me so long but im finally here. And god, why did i even think that 22 is too old or too late. Thank you art prof for accompanying me in this new journey :)

My take on this, is that if someone under 30 can excel at their art in just 10-15 years, then I still have plenty of time to practice my art to a high standard. The issue is that older artists often don’t have the same rewards offered & freedom to chase every opportunity, be that due to family /work commitments, or health etc.
I’m 64 & finally started learning painting online in the mid 2010s. I’d always drawn & knew I had aptitude, just no training or time to pursue.

Pushing 40, didn't do any art from the ages of 18 to 35, left finance to write and art. I sometimes wish it hadn't taken so long to reach this point, but knowing myself, I would have been phenomenally stressed out trying to earn a living from art at a younger age and I would have had a hard time finding my own voice while trying to ignore what was 'popular' or commercial. And honestly, it's only in my 30s that I've been able to begin to synthesise my life experience into creative work.

I could have written this, except I haven’t left my career yet. Maybe someday. You aren’t alone. ❤️

I retired from my corporate job at 64 and began painting full-time. Now, at 69 I feel I am getting into my skills and am looking forward to what I can do in the future. BUT I am aware that I'm not going to have a 40-year or maybe even a 20 -year career. For this reason, I paint in soft pastel as I feel I can get more done in a finite time❤

Relieved to hear Clara say she’s past worrying about these things. I wonder how much some of the lists are generated by the amount of pUblic relations and self marketing those who make the lists versus people who are focused on the list. “Networking magic” is a spot on description.

I'm so glad I found this channel, I've been watching your videos while working and it's inspiring! I'm a 32 year old mom who spent my 20s getting my health stable. It means a lot to hear about artists who didn't even start their careers until their 40s! 💖

I took the scenic route for sure. I feel like as an adult the depth of who I am now contributes to my passion for art.

A lady in the RISD admissions office once told me “You can either take the direct route or the scenic route” when I showed some hesitancy about applying because I wasn’t sure if I could afford it. That was almost 10 years ago and I’m still not sure if I regret putting art on hold to solidify a nursing career but this stream makes me optimistic. I put art on hold to pursue a career that could finance it and though it took a little longer- well a lot longer than I expected lol I’m hopeful that I could still be very successful when I finally do return to my art.

Same here though. My friends who are in the same age as me are already making a living out of their art and they are still in high school which is making me pressured to sell my art but if I think about it, it makes me think if my art is good enough and is worth selling for or not.

Watching this in 2024. Went back to making art after a stroke in 2022. I will be 60 in a few months and the way I see it is things happen when they happen and we should not put a deadline on accomplishments.
Can we not have a Forbes list of successful artists who started late in life?
Truth be told I just want to create stuff.

The love of creating is the only important thing to hang onto, and you don't need to be any prerequisite age for that! -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist
