We tested five ways to find hidden cameras in hotels and house rentals

  • Have you ever wondered if you're being watched?
    It's a feeling that's creeping in for more travelers, as stories of hidden cameras - in hotel rooms, house rentals, cruise ships, even airplane bathrooms - continue to make headlines.
    Spycams were once the stuff of international espionage, with secret agents given cameras resembling pocket watches, matchbooks - even tubes of lipstick.
    Pieter Tjia, founder of Singapore tech company OMG Solutions, said that cameras have become smaller and harder to see in the past three years - often hidden in everyday objects such as calculators, diffusers, and water bottles.
    But how hard is it to find these cameras? And do devices designed to locate hidden cameras really work?

      one method, which I use, is to have an old cheap camcorder with night vision. This will allow you to see the IR being emitted from cameras capable of night vision. This works unless you have an emitter that is seperate from the camera, but if you find an emitter than you know that there are cameras around.

      The thing about paying a ransomer, lets the ransomer know that you've got money and are willing to pay. You might end up getting more inquiries of money, or even your data sold to other people looking for targets to pressure.
      If the ransomer/scammer does follow through on their threat.. They'll be committing more serious crimes, take away their leverage as well as provoke more reason from you to retaliate, so in most cases.. Someone like that would likely just make threats and be careful of actually following through.

    One thing that you can do is turn off all the lights and look for the dim glow of infrared LEDs which many cameras use for night vision. You can also open the camera app on your phone and watch the screen while you point it around (in the dark); your phone’s camera can be more sensitive to infrared than your eyes. You should try it with both the front and rear cameras since they could vary in sensitivity.

    • @RRKS

      Works a lot better if you remove the IR filter in/on/behind the cameras lens. Just use a real cheap camera you don't want to use for photography. Although it's quite interesting if your remove the cameras IR blocking filter and screw, onto the lens, an IR pass filter. A modified web camera connected to a phone or tablet is my preferred option.

We couldn't see anything but I stuffed hand towels in the opening. Next day at breakfast, which was a large table and food shared with other guests, a young couple arrived late to eat. The owner made a big deal out of offering them a large hot plate of food from the kitchen, saying 'after last night I'm sure you're both hungry!' We thought this was a really weird comment, all the rest of us were hungry too. When we checked out the guy was cold and reserved with us...disappointed?? Change clothing under the covers of bed sheeting, or use a mate to hold up the sheets as a makeshift privacy curtain.
    ALSO: Do the same when you log in to apps/accounts on your phone!!

    The best way to find a hidden camera is to use a non-linear junction detector, the tool-of-choice for Technical Surveillance Cuntermeasure Technicians. Left out here is that these cameras need the energy and either a connection or the card to be taken out what makes it harder to use them than in this setting

    Hm. Watching this video reminds me of a time when I was working over and after lockdown doing bicycle delivery and for some reason there was this Chinese guy who used to hang out with a few of the other guys I used to work with who started to follow me around and hanging around on his own looking for me when the other guys weren't even there, and he had no reason to even be in my city since he lived in another city. His behaviour went from being a random guy hanging out with the other guys, to acting like he had singled me out and was trying to stalk me. At one point he told me he wanted to give me a lift in his car, which was a Mercedez to show off and I made the mistake to accept. I told him I had a boyfriend already in the expectation he would understand that I was taken and that he could just let me ride in his car just out of curiousity as a mate and nothing else. Then when he had me in private in the car, he told me how I could go and stay in his apartment he rented out in Manchester as an airBRB with my boyfriend, and told me how he had a piano there and how he would like to watch me playing the piano and wanted to film me. Then he just dropped into the conversation how he had cameras in the apartment and how he would like to film me and my boyfriend, jokingly. I didn't say anything and said nothing and didn't take him seriously. But then when he dropped me off I just made a mental note to avoid him after that. Then I left my job and didn't see him again. Thinking about it now, it's making me wonder how come he had so much money to have a grand piano and a Mercedez and why he was joking about 'wanting to film me and my boyfriend'. It's making me think, it's possible he was one of those same kind of Chinese guys filming people covertly in his Airbnb apartment and potentially selling the videos to porno channels or whatever, and that's how he made his money. He didn't seem to do anything else apart from just hang around on street corners doing nothing beyond acting creepy. I'm thinking now, maybe I should have reported him to the police to be investigated, because he even confessed himself with his own words he wanted to film me and my boyfriend in his airbnb, so there's every possible chance he had already done it to other people, and his 'joke' was actually an admission of what he had already in real life. Eek. Some guys are just so gross.😕

    We are past the point where we are carrying “hidden” cameras everywhere we go. Furthermore, the technology of cameras are so sophisticated that you can place them on drones far away enough from being spotted or heard and I’m sure the quality is crystal clear.

    How are these hidden cameras powered and how long can they stay recording?

    • @ha231
      @ha231 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

      It depends. Some may be PoE devices, as in they're IP cams that are hooked directly to a router/switch, which connects them to the network and powers them at the same time.
      That would be how they can livestream footage from these cameras.
      Others, like the other guy said, can be powered by battery and those devices have limited access for the pervert, as battery powered cameras can't effectively livestream due to the limited power source. So they are often motion activated and capture short clips.

    • @LordSaliss
      @LordSaliss 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +25

      If you hide one in a clock on the end table in a hotel room it can use the power the clock itself has from the wall and never have power issues. If you hide one in a smoke detector these are often powered by line voltage now so again they will last forever, and also have a battery backup if the main power ever goes out so they keep recording. Ceiling fan mounted cameras can also often be powered from the line voltage even if the fan is off since many modern ones have full time power now. If you hide one in a light fixture in the bathroom you can tie it to the line voltage and that way it only turns on and records when someone turns the bathroom light on, which means no wasted time on footage to go through either.
      If they record to microSD card they have a finite recording, but those cards are getting pretty big so they can probably go a week between checking and retrieving footage now days. If they record to a server somewhere they can record forever until detected or removed. You dont even need to record over a private, hidden wifi network either. There is free radio frequency around the upper 400MHz to low 600MHz range (UHF bands) that you can use for whatever local traffic you want, or many use the old 5.8GHz DECT frequency band. If the camera is fitted with one of these frequency band transmitters it cant be detected by wifi scanners because it isnt on a wifi frequency. Drones started using UHF band transmitters and receivers for communication and video feed, so they have become more common and gotten smaller. That combined with being undetectable by wifi scanners and their much longer range has made them perfect for hidden camera use as well.

    This would have been hard to show but when searching for cameras it's better to do it with the lights off. Lens become more obvious as their reflection becomes easier to see. Also, be wary of any dark protective cover like the ones over digital clock displays and scrutinize them extra closely. Of course, as soon as you find a camera keep looking but contact someone outside of the place you're staying and report it and then have them either come themselves or send someone to verify. Then go stay somewhere else because you can never be sure you found them all.
