    There is no city like London, from it's history to it's architecture. Privileged to be born and bred here and watching this channel just reminds me why I love it so much

    0:34 All the sightlines!
    Thank you, Vicki, for taking the trouble to go out there and show us a couple of them.

    I'm fully behind these laws - they look after London's iconic views!

      MrCube17 alas the view in Richmond has been spoils after a foreign Chinese development in Stratford, I don't know how anyone didn't see the planning permission sneaking it's way through the radar, bloody foreign investors

    +Geofftech will you get access to abandoned platforms at any stage through London underground or will they not allow it?

    Don't think it was on the map, but if you walk along the south side of the dock between Canary Wharf Tube and heron Quays DLR yo can see St Paul's from there - or at least, you could last time I was there, which was several years ago now.

    Apparently there isn't much science about how the sightlines were drawn up:
    www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2015/dec/11/city-of-london-skyline-of-tomorrow-interactive
    "These rigid rules first appeared in the 1930s, when the surveyor of St Paul’s came up with a precise grid of heights around the cathedral to safeguard the panorama from the South Bank. “We’ve been able to calculate where he took his views from, and most of them end up outside pubs,” says Rees."

    And now the Richmond Park sightline has been broken by a giant building outside the protected zone! So much for planners and law makers.

    • @Londonistvids
      @Londonistvids  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      What! who broke the Richmond Park sightline?

    • @batman51
      @batman51 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      See you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/stop-destruction-of-historic-st-paul-s-view. Planning area outside of sightline control area - usual council cockup.

      As a young guy looking to one day own a home, I can´t believe that such stringent planning regulations exist in a city that has seen house prices jump 516% in 20 years:

    Why does the view of St Paul's from far away need to be protected. If tourists want to see St Paul's, just actually go there in central london. I couldn't care less about some ancient cathedral.

    I used to be able to see St. Paul's from my bedroom window. The house was situated around 200 yards North of White Hart Lane, just on the Wood Green side of the border with Tottenham, and across the road from the border with Edmonton. Alexandra Palace was just visible to my right, around 1.5 miles away.
