I live so far away in time and space from the concerns of Dostoevsky, but because of you I learned something of him today. I live in a flat world of scrubby bushes, featureless and silent, with only an occasional distant weird structure rising up, somebody's idea of a hurricane proof house, as ugly as may be necessary. Yet I feel connected in some way to his suffering. Daily trials have taught me patience, even though I still have much to learn. I picture Dostoevsky in his apartment in SpB writing feverishly in cold damp conditions. In your video it looks idyllic but for the writer facing his imminent death I'm sure it was anything but. But Dostoevsky was doing what he needed to do, even as the life drained out of him. So he kept writing and the world of words has been transformed by his effort. My day started horribly. A sailboat with its tall metal mast and poor seamanship struck the power-lines that bring the modern convenience of "electricity" from the mainland. I'm sure it made a wonderful display of sparks on their boat but all I heard (and felt) was a loud explosion as a nearby transformer blew out, casting us 150-years into the past for the next 2 1/4 hours! Finding the path to overcoming our expectations is a daily struggle and requires you to forgive failures as you go, and that's hard. I've learned that lesson. Sometimes good comes from disaster, because it allows us to appreciate how wonderful our normal daily life is. Tonight in about two hours I get to stand on Niles Channel Road and watch the sun set over the sea. That thought is swirling in my head and for those too sensible to pay attention to my words I hope you too, have a suitable balm. Yes, I had plans for today, but we can't always achieve what we expected to. So let us commit to seizing the day, not necessarily by doing big things, but by being aware of the day as it flows by even and especially in the small things. It's the best I can offer as sunset approaches.

@@RussianwithAnastasia Crime and Punishment (In Greek), The Idiot (in English, I saw also the movie - excellent) The Devils (English), Brothers Karamazov (English -also the movie), White Nights, The Dream of a Ridiculus Man (the best summary of D.'s understanding of the meaning of life), Krotkaja, his Pushkin lecture, and two volumes from his notes, and articles in a Greek edition. Notes from the Underground is next. Even through the translations the text trasported me to the St Petersburg of the 1850s and 60s.

Здравствуйте. Я прочитал роман называется " записки из мертвого дома " на арабском языке. Достоевский -замечательный писатель .Я тоже прочитал о женах декабристов.
Читал не все к сожалению, но это значит есть стимул на будущее. Я живу под Питером и часто бываю в городе. Все хочу там побывать, да никак не соберусь. Времени нет. Спасибо. Благодаря вам совершил виртуальную экскурсию. Смотришь на его квартиру и представляешь ее как место действия одного из его романов.

Hi Anastasia, i have a question. From your experience do you think russian is easier to learn for a romanian speaker than say, an english speaker? (or is there basically no difference?)
Since romanian has quite a few slavic words and other slavic influences. just curious what your thoughts are on that. thanks
I think there is no difference. 🙂 The language is easier to learn for those who have motivation and discipline to study and practice it regularly. 🤗

Checkov is much more similar to Tolstoy than he is to Dostoevsky if that is of interest. Dostoevsky is a more wild and dramatic writer. Crime and Punishment is as good a place as any to begin with if reading Dostoevsky.

Almost everything by Dostoevsky is well worth reading.To recommend something a little different, a book by a living Russian Victor Pelevin called The Clay Machine Gun I think is great. It is also translated as Buddha’s Little Finger but us the same book.
