Winston-Salem got Wake Forest College the same way Durham got Trinity College: TOBACCO MONEY. The difference being that the Duke Family renamed Trinity College to Duke University whereas the Reynolds Family kept the Wake Forest name.
Orlov is only 2 years older than Skjei. And tbh Pesce was locking down the 2nd line for a long time but the last 2 years he's been shaky (and injury prone). Canes maybe could've figured out a Skjei extension last year but honestly not that big a deal. To your point about Guentzel though, I don't know why they put their eggs in that basket. Meanwhile Nashville lands both Stamkos and Marchessault...
Agree with Giglio on the Canes screwing up the defensive group by bringing in Burns/Orlov and losing Pesce/Skjei as a result. Always thought the Orlov move was odd, when the Canes had bigger needs up front and that money could've been better spent to fix goal scoring.
All the doom and gloom over the Canes is overblown, in my opinion. Will they take a step back this year? Sure. But the crop of FAs wasn't great, not worth breaking the bank over and getting yourself into a ton of cap issues later in the future. So put a band-aid on it for now with low-risk deals and see where that takes you this year.
