Special concretes - Self Compacting Concrete - Design principles, mix designs, concrete properties

The lecture opens with the discussion on workability tests for Self Compacting Concrete (SCC) followed by testing for segregation potential. The on-site all acceptance test prevalent in Japan for testing flowability, segregation and passing ability of SCC is discussed in detail. The SCC classifications based on the results obtained in various tests are also addressed, followed by the effect of flaky and elongated aggregates in SCC properties. The lecture also discusses various steps in designing a self compacting concrete. The discussion includes several tests to be conducted during the design. The development of a ternary packing diagram for aggregates and the influence of aggregate packing density on SCC properties are discussed in detail. The lecture also focusses on the rheological characterization of superplasticizers for SCC.
