this is the history we need to preserve for future generations. thank you for this story: brought me to tears. down with the dams, allow the native people to control the waterways that they've managed for centuries or even thousands of years
Thank you to all, and an extra special thank you to Agnes and her family for sharing this day with us. It truly makes me feel like I'm back with my maternal family in rural PA. I would love to attend one locally, especially with my Muckleshoot neighbors. But being Autistic, I always feel like I'm intruding everywhere and don't want to offend. Especially cultures I truly respect and am thoroughly fascinated and constantly enlightened by. Hoping to attend my first Muckleshoot event tomorrow. They have a Fridays at the barn with plant medicine, rock painting, story telling and tie dye. Open to the community so I'm hoping it's the real definition of community as I suspect it is :) Under 10 must be attended by an adult so I think it's a nice space for me and the kiddo :) Hopefully this can maybe lead to me attending a first salmon welcoming some day. I think for me, that would be a wonderful day. Again, thank you so much to all and especially Grandma Agnes. Many hugs to her :)
4:32 1994 MORE FISH IN THE RIVER THAN EVER BEFORE ??? In 1994/ 95 THREE of our dams were still in place. And had been in place for several decades prior. I moved to the Rogue in 1982. SALMON WERE IN MASSIVE ABUNDANCE. Dams were well established by that time. There were more ponds. More fishing. MORE SALMON ! More wildlife. More birds of all kinds. Mire vegitation. More wild edibles. I know this, becuse this is my stomping grounds. I see it with my own eyes daily. Now, Not nearly as many salmon fishermen nowadays on the Rogue. Yet the human population has doubled. So.... Go figure. If there were more fish., there would be more people fishing. Taking out the dams took all of that away. And filled the Rogue River with toxic sediments. The news reporter says restoration of the water-ways is causing fish numbers to increase. What a Hoot ! The numbers are nowhere close to what they were when the damsvwere in place. I KNOW ! I SEE WITH MY OWN EYES! And our forests burn every summer. Our skies are grey and clouded with endless days of choking smoke and stench. Foest management worked. And our region was profitable. Famlies thrived. All of this enviromental expeimentation did not keep Sothern Oregon from turming into the next Californication. This is a beautiful, seductive illusion.
