could be tuning could be cord problem or amp

it depends if you are playing on an electric or acoustic. Muddled seems like you have too many low frequencies for your liking.
Either change where you are picking; (closer to the bridge will you give more treble than bass).
Change your pickup position to the bridge if you are on electric.
Or just slap some compression and or eq on it.
