Thinking of getting a flowhive in hopes of my local bee keeper's idea of moving a large hive in my garden within this hive

How long should it take to start seeing brood on the foundation-less frames?

If you wanted to harvest royal jelly you could go about the same way you would queen rearing but once the large queen cell is filled with royal jelly instead of allowing it to be capped you would harvest the jelly. I've never done it myself but I would assume you would be sacrificing queens in the process. Although more research should be done on the matter.

This video is very educational for me. I am hoping that I am able to get a swarm soon. Question from me; Do I only use the brood box in the first few weeks with the new swarm?

    • @FlowHive
      @FlowHive  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Etienne, Good luck with your swarm! Yes, just the brood box until the bees build it out. Once the whole brood box is built out and there is a carpet of bees on the top then it's time to pot the super on! :) If you have any questions please let us know - Sam

He's so peaceful sounding... he's probably got some FlowBud somewhere.

Have you had a problem with them drawing out too much drone comb? Thank you.

Yeah, they didn't answer this, probably because you're right and it results it heaps of drone comb and a smaller colony. Sure, it's "natural" but it's not a good way of helping bees to make honey... they need to use around 4 pounds of honey to make 1 pound of comb. That's honey lost, and extra work for the bees, I reckon.

How long does it usually take for bees to form cone from introduction to adding flow top?. Just started

Hi Lee, it depends on time of year, health of colony and access to forage. In spring it can take about a month to 6 weeks?

      Hey Arron,
Thanks for your question - how exciting you're just starting!
Our brood frames come foundationless but you do have the option of setting them up with wire and wax foundation if you like - we don't supply these but beekeeping supplies stores do.
You want to transfer your bees into just the brood box first and let them well and truly establish by drawing out all the comb and filling the whole box nice and strong before adding the super.
See this page on brood frame set ups, and then the one about adding your super further down the track:

      support.honeyflow.com/how-do-i-add-the-flow-super-to-my-brood-box/
It's highly recommended to join your local beekeeping club to learn as you get started, as well as what is best to do in your specific climate and region.

why do you only use 8 frames in stead of the 10 frames I always hear about

8 frames are much easier/lighter to handle than 10 frame box.

I think you're making life very hard from your bees, starting them off in foundationless frames. Doesn't this limit their ability to build their numbers quickly, and result in their spending more effort making comb than the honey which we're looking for? I also want to ask the same question as others.... doesn't it also result in a lot of useless drone brood?
Maybe you could answer some of the questions you're being asked, too.

Cedar personally uses no foundation, as it allows the bees to build their own natural structure with different cell sizes for the different types of bees. One of the fantastic things about beekeeping is that there are many ways of doing things, so we advise that you research this aspect of beekeeping to see what resonates with you. - Isobella.
