You should change the title. He’s agreeing with his crew. He’s more lashing out at showtime or whatever production managers who decided to cut him & his crews’ filming time
On the crew side, we don't want it either. It means we have to rush the fuck out of everything, only to end up with a sub-standard product. The only thing you're left with after turning in something "nice" for the dailies is the thought of what could have been with an extra day, a week. I totally get it. And having a background in a ton of different jobs and industries (not trying to brag, nothing to brag about lol) that kind of "rushitrushitrushit" attitude is everywhere. It sucks when the higher ups or scheduling only looks at the bottom line and not a goddamn thing else. I get it.

As a set decorator it lifted my heart to hear him say he wanted to use the sets because he loved that place. They expect so much for so little. This breakdown is so justified.

Unfortunately there are only a few artists in this world who even have the clout in order to lash out like this. If the dipshit investors who make these dipshit rulings had any say, im sure he'd be fired on the spot for this like they would with any "creative", because theyre worthless scum with no values at a base level, let alone artistic values, but they cant fire lynch or theyll totally burn thanks to his big name.
Lynch is actually well known to be a very attentive and kind person on set, both with his cast and crew (there's a reason why he's collaborated with the same people for 40 years and viceversa). Usually these type of clips are taken from the TP: TR behind the scenes, and really it's just him venting his frustrations with the process more than anything else.
and it's not like these people aren't accustomed to him as a person. if you know somebody for long enough you sympathize with their outrage over shit like this. i think that's a big part of this video.
It's creative professionals, even just professionals in general. We have all been there, and likely too many times. We are hired for the job. "Trusted" by those with the money to make what we said we would. But in the end, given half of what we need in half the time to do it. Then sometimes they thank you by having the balls to say "this is the best you can do?!" It's a fuckin joke sometimes. I feel for the guy. But I also get some solace to know even those at the top of the food chain have to deal with dumb shit like this. Wish it were better, but for now knowing we all aren't alone with getting a shit sandwich is...well, shitty, but relatable at least.

Well, the venturing party coughing up the money. And they rarely see the benefit of an immensely better product. They only see a gamble on a marginal increase in product quality. This is the problem with non-creatives ignoring who they "trust" to make something with their money.
The behind the scenes for ‘The Return’ is so interesting. I admire Lynch a lot but it’s hard to get a gauge on what he’s really like deep down. In spite of smoking, being occasionally ill tempered and hard to understand, most people around him seem to adore him. He’s cagey and abrupt with some then oddly warm with others. He cries watching a comedic scene with Tom Sizemore. He disappears to meditate away from the his work, but arrives to conscientiously micro-manage. Fascinating stuff.

You can't polish something smooth and beautiful without friction. Lynch is frustrated with the process and expresses this. It's nice to see there's real emotion and passion there.
I don't think he's lashing out at the crew. He's clearly lashing out at the way movies are made these days. Tight schedules, everything planned to the last detail. As an artist he just wants room to experiment and be creative and spontaneous. And he's just frustrated that this film (whichever film it was) wasn't allowing him to do that.

It would be weird for a film director not to occasionally get pissed or and angry. I think people just expect everyone to be angels all the time. It's not realistic. In Lynch's defense, he gets angry here, but he doesn't direct the anger at the people around him. He's just irritated and pissed off but he's not being abusive.

Important piece left out is that he mentioned at the beginning “but there’s a lot of scenes at that location without Beverley,” to which they respond “yeah but if we do it in two days we can pay the other actors less.” So this thought of “get it done as quickly/cheaply as possible” (at the expensive of the cast/crew) is what broke the camel’s back and drove him up a wall.
Crazy how Showtime treated him like this but he ended up making the greatest show of that year. David and his crew are exceptional for what they were able to accomplish at the end of it all.

The cold hard reality I think a lot of film fans fail to fully appreciate is just how expensive it is to make a film and how tightly budgeted they are and in turn what that does to the creative process of the filmmakers. Everyone expects a film to be brilliant but few appreciate the massive constraints placed on filmmakers that hinder their ability to achieve their most brilliant ambitions.

It’s why Kubrick had a crew of around 12 -ish and would tie talent up for months and months. The results showed why.
