The Beekhuizerzand is a drifting sand area located on the North Veluwe near Harderwijk. It has a size of about 200 hectares and is managed by the municipality of Harderwijk.Before 1830, the Beekhuizerzand was part of a large drift sand area. In the period between about 1880 and 1930 this was planted with Scots pine on a large scale, mainly to prevent drifting. It was also put into use as a military training area and opened for recreation from 1963. In 2004, many of the flying pines were cut down and the top layer of soil was removed, turning it into a true drifting sand area where the drifting sand has become free again. The area is grazed by sheep.
The Beekhuizerzand is characterized by differences in altitude and is home to lichens and the sand lizard that are characteristic of this type of environment.
