Tommy Bond, the famous "Butch" of the "Our Gang" and "Little Rascals" shorts, discusses his life and career in this rare half-hour TV interview with cable host Skip E Lowe.
I was shocked to learn that offscreen, Tommy "Butch" Bond and Sidney "Woim" Kibrick were actually nice kids and Carl "Alfalfa" Switzer was the hellraiser.
I heard that Sidney Kibrick who played Butch's sidekick "The Woim " is still alive as of December 2020. Really loved the Our Gang series when I was a kid. RIP Mr. Tommy Bond.
Had the pleasure of meeting Tommy right around when this video was shot. A very genuine, kind hearted person. It was a huge thrill to meet him. I remember thinking afterwards “wow, I met a little rascal!”. To this day it remains one of the biggest thrills of my life.
It's on youtube now. So many great "homemade" documentaries and goofy stuff like Mr. Beast and a zillion teachers showing how to do stuff. Hollywood gave it up but humans didn't.
Nice person. I met him at Kobey's Swap Meet in San Diego, Ca back in 2004. He had his own space selling Our Gang memorabilia. His location was close to the entrance.
This may help many have a better understanding of why Mr. Bond had such a positive viewpoint on life, and remarks he made about "Doing to others, as you would have them do to you" and a few other comments from the bible. Around 1998 Tommy Bond visited my church. He spent his retirement years after his show business career speaking at churches about being a "Born Again Christian" He put his faith first, and it was amazing the many famous roles he turn down due to his moral stand. Regardless of your beliefs of is God real, or not, Mr Bond appears to have lived an enjoyable, fulfilled life standing firm on his belief system.
I am so glad these interviews exist...Skip chose people who otherwise have been forgotten...it is like hearing from an old friend you haven't seen in years......However, what it annoying is Skip asks a question, the guest gets maybe one sentence out, and Skip cuts him off and changes the subject....but still, God bless you Skip, rest in peace!
Shirley Temples mom took her to audition for the The little Rascals and she got turned down because of previous acting experience, and like he said Hal Roach was looking for unknown average kids.
Definitely. What an awkward situation to be in. Don't get me wrong -- I'm really grateful that this interview exists, but it's pretty embarrassing to watch.... Interviewing is a skill most people don't have.
Right. But what I do like about Skip is his passion for the subject. It's infectious and not phony. He's just not prepared. Almost every interview I've seen, he gets something wrong. I guess that's why he was on cable access and not on a "real" channel.
This must be an interview from around 1993, because Tommy says that Spanky had just died. I watched "The Five Little Peppers" and he was a Pepper. Good movies.
Tommy spent his time working behind the camera for a TV station in Fresno, California. He was a United States Navy veteran who served in World War II. He passed away in 2005 a few weeks after his 80th birthday.
I ran into Tommy somewhere in Florida about 20 years ago, and our conversation went on for probably about an hour. This guy had plenty to say and found humor in EVERYTHING. He was a great storyteller; too bad this interviewer kept cutting him off. I guess this is from the early days of cable TV when anybody could get a show on the air simply by asking for it. Anyway, Tommy and I had some similar interests , so we exchanged info. About a week later, I was surprised to get in the mail a signed photo from Tommy of his football scene with Babe Hardy in "Blockheads," one of my favorite Laurel & Hardy films. We never did keep in touch, but I have very fond memories of the guy. Too bad that Steven "Spiegel" film was such a mess, huh?
Skip is an iconic interviewer. He’s who Martin Short based Jiminy Glick. This was a wonderful discovery with “Butch” as the guest. He seemed an incredibly lovable person.
I remember him when he used to go to the swap meet & autographs for like five bucks years and years ago and my mom asked him when he was done at the signing if you wanted to go to Red Lobster next door he jumped on that I got five of his autographs and different pictures he lived in Imperial Beach San Diego who's really a nice guy
Woim is still alive. Sidney Kibrick is 94 and still underappreciated for his angst ridden sidekickery. Most memorable is when Butch and Woim stole Buckwheats marbles and mushed tomatoes in their faces. Buckwheat and Porkys sought justice from the "Sekret Revengers Club"
Little Tommy Bond sings "Just Friends" for the class in this Little Rascals (or is it Our Gang?) clip: th-cam.com/video/aTWbm4ZJ8C4/w-d-xo.html A priceless performance indeed.
The part where Tommy is talking is really cool. The part with the other guy who won't stop talking or interrupting not as cool. Johnny Carson, Dina Shore, Merv Griffin, Mike Douglas, all spoiled us with their ability to get great answers and never step on the guest's comments.
Butch's rendition of JUST FRIENDS is one of my favorite great performances of all time!!! Meanwhile what a classy, intelligent guy he seems to be, especially faced with this clueless interviewer who doesn't seem to know thing #1 about Tommy or Our Gang.
Why does the interviewer remind me of Jiminy Glick?.."Lucky! I like that word!"....lucky is an unfamiliar term for you? What really got me was when he said they were showing a clip of the rascals and all I saw was Bond looking about 18 or 19 LOL...I feel like Tommy walked away from this interview wondering "who the hell got this guy?"
is this who "jiminiy Glick" was based on? because the way he talks, and how he is interviewing, and moving...and how they film it, and the set.. it looks like this is where that character came from.
Gee Whizz I would have loved to meet him but this guy who seems to know very little about who his amazing guest is gets to meet and (try) to interview him. And not a Little Rascals clip! Didn't even know Steven Spielberg
thank goodness Tommy could carry the interview because this guy was AWEFUL
Yeah I agree he sounds like a used car salesman.
Really.
He seriously needed to do research.. he can’t tell which kid was “Butch” and thought Jackie Coogan was a little rascal.. what a doof 🤦♀️
“Steven Spiegel” 😆😂🤣
I know! Tommy mentions Jacky Cooper and ding dong asks about Jackie Coogan.
Tommy Bond was a genius-mensch. A man of intelligence but with incredible humility. These people are incredibly rare.
From a great era of 📺
RIP Butch. You will never be forgotten.
No Foolin. We all loved Butch
And how!
I was shocked to learn that offscreen, Tommy "Butch" Bond and Sidney "Woim" Kibrick were actually nice kids and Carl "Alfalfa" Switzer was the hellraiser.
Mr. Bond was very gracious to Mr. Lowe, who was clueless with every "probing" question! 🤣
I heard that Sidney Kibrick who played Butch's sidekick "The Woim " is still alive as of December 2020. Really loved the Our Gang series when I was a kid. RIP Mr. Tommy Bond.
Yeah he’s 92 and kickin

Tommy played a bully, but he wasn't one in real life. That's what made him special.
Alfalfa was the bully in real life Tommy Bond seem like a great guy RIP
I met Tommy a few years before he died in San Diego, an amazing man. I told him he was a living legend. This clip pretty much proved it.
gombet yes meet hem in swapmet San Diego
@@joelvelasquez5889 - May the wonderful Tommy Bond rest in peace.
The interviewer's knowledge is ridiculous.
It was completely absent.
Facts
STFU! You wouldn't even be here watching this archive if it wasn't for Skip. Ungrateful piece of Sh**
Agree. Who doesn't know from a picture which was Spanky, Alfalfa, and Butch. If you're not familiar with the Rascals, do your homework.
It’s hard to focus on the amazing Tommy while he’s being interview by Jiminy Glick
I can't believe how poorly prepared this interviewer is.
he is a cock hungry old man.
Yeah I agree! This interviewer sucks at his job.
This guy has no freaking clue...and he can't get anything right even after Tommy clarified 2 or 3 times.
3 minutes in....... couldn't agree more.
Poor Skip, obviously didn't watch the Little Rascals. Great to see Tommy Bond though.
Tommy Bond, you are fantastic! Loved you as Butch, always my favorite! And from Dallas - that's awesome!
You know.... Tommy was right! Creativity, and imagination in Hollywood is GONE. It’s sad!
Tommy Bond did an excellent job as 'Butch' the bully. Interesting stories of his time with Our Gang.
This may help many have a better understanding of why Mr. Bond had such a positive viewpoint on life, and remarks he made about "Doing to others, as you would have them do to you" and a few other comments from the bible.

Though they were enemies on screen, Tommy was a good friend to Carl "Alfalfa" Switzer. When Carl felt upset and troubled, Tommy would calm him down.
Shirley Temples mom took her to audition for the The little Rascals and she got turned down because of previous acting experience, and like he said Hal Roach was looking for unknown average kids.
Skip reminds me of Martin Short doing jiminy Glitch
Martin Short based the character on him.
johnbamburg Oh I do see the similarities 👏🏻
Hahah
@@JSB1882 when I first heard his voice that's immediately what came to mind. Did short ever admit to that?
Indeed
What a great guy ! RIP Mr. Bond....
He was a great guy. And glad he was able to lead a good life as he grew up.
Did you know the original actor of spin is still alive

One of my favorite scenes was Tommy singing "we're just friends " before he was Butch
"Mush and milk" my favorite episode

OMG! I think this interviewer is the seed idea for Jiminy Glick. 😮😅
What a nice man, Tommy Bond is. I like skip but he really should do more research before his interviews.
Definitely. What an awkward situation to be in. Don't get me wrong -- I'm really grateful that this interview exists, but it's pretty embarrassing to watch.... Interviewing is a skill most people don't have.

Skip was known for making constant mistakes! Lol
Skip just does`t give a shit lol!!!!
M. M. My favorite movie Tommy Bond was on is The Five Little Peppers movies
Mr. Bond, what a nice man...rare in Hollywood.
This is one of the most unprepared interviewers I’ve ever seen.
At least he had hair.
Skip had to be the inspiration for Jiminy Glick
Tommy Bond was almost too good as the Bully.
This must be an interview from around 1993, because Tommy says that Spanky had just died.
I watched "The Five Little Peppers" and he was a Pepper. Good movies.
Your darn right it's Butch.
Thank you Tommy for carrying this interview with professionalism, because the interviewer didn't.
Martin Short acknowledged he based his unctuous, often bumbling Jiminy Glick character partly on Mr. Lowe.
25:01 The kid that Tommy Bond didn't recognize was Leonard who could wiggle his ears but he didn't say much (Leonard Landy).
Tommy Bond was a nice man - but Skip E!!! Can a guy get more stuff wrong?!
Tommy spent his time working behind the camera for a TV station in Fresno, California. He was a United States Navy veteran who served in World War II.
He passed away in 2005 a few weeks after his 80th birthday.
Great clip. Thanks so much.
The interviewer reminds me of Jiminy Glick!!!! 😂
Yup. I think this is the guy who inspired Marin Short to do the character

Dude is obviously not a rascals fan
Glad to hear they got an amicable settlement.
Butch should have straighten "Skip" ( who the hell has a name like Skip" ) suits the interviewer to a tee . He skipped the research on his guest!!!!
Mr. Bond, our country is rotting from within!
Skip points to buckwheat... This is you right? 🤣
😅
RIP Tommy.
Skip E was the biggest joke. It’s a shame since he interviewed some legends
Gotta find the book Tommy wrote!!
This interview was apparently taped in 1993, based on the comment that Spanky had just recently passed over.
And they talk about them making a new Little Rascals movie. The Little Rascals movie came out in 1994.
Butch was the voice of Owl Jolsin in the cartoon "I Love to Singa".
Really? ...wow , I used to love that cartoon.😂
Just friends! Is the greatest child rendition of a song ever filmed! R.I.P Tommy!
Skip is an iconic interviewer. He’s who Martin Short based Jiminy Glick. This was a wonderful discovery with “Butch” as the guest. He seemed an incredibly lovable person.
“I like that word lucky” Skip you Kook
Butch being interviewed by Zack Galifianakis
A rare Hollywood class-act.
Good to learn about the financial agreement !

He had a small roll in the Laurel & Hardy movie " Block Heads " as the kid with the football !! :)
I just saw this and I thought the talk show host wasn't good at all
Tommy Bond was great however great.🇺🇲📺🇺🇲
The part where Tommy is talking is really cool. The part with the other guy who won't stop talking or interrupting not as cool. Johnny Carson, Dina Shore, Merv Griffin, Mike Douglas, all spoiled us with their ability to get great answers and never step on the guest's comments.
Wow. The interviewer didn’t do his homework at all. He didn’t know Tommy Bond at all.
This interviewer was obviously not a fan of little rascals. He knew nothing.
The first time I saw Jiminy Glick, I knew who the character was based on.
The real life jiminy glick
Tommy, as noted elsewhere, comes across beautifully, but the"host" is magnificently inept, nearly a scoundrel.
Butch was one of my favorite Little Rascal.
Butch's rendition of JUST FRIENDS is one of my favorite great performances of all time!!! Meanwhile what a classy, intelligent guy he seems to be, especially faced with this clueless interviewer who doesn't seem to know thing #1 about Tommy or Our Gang.
I Love to Singa
Reminds me kinda Brian Dennehy
Tommy Bond The First Jimmy Olsen.
He had a political talk show in Ventura California in early 90’s
The"Superman"movie serials were actually released in 1948 and 1950.
some must have been filmed in 47
I think Martin Short based his character Jiminy Glick on Skip E. Lowe.
The man at 14:45 talking to tommy bond i believe was the wizard, in the wizard of oz.
Spanky was from Dallas also.
No royalties, it figures!

This interviewer didn't do his homework. It's seems as though he doesn't know much about Our Gang, he didn't even know that they started in 1922.
Was he the first on screen bully ?
No
Tommy was right. America has become Rome. What a great man!
This has to be! what Jiminy Glick is based on

So this is where Jiminy Glick, came from.
is this who "jiminiy Glick" was based on? because the way he talks, and how he is interviewing, and moving...and how they film it, and the set.. it looks like this is where that character came from.

1993
