The term free range is a deceptive, misleading, and unregulated, look for pasture raised when buying eggs. The only thing I disagree with is the nesting box part you don't need 1 nesting box per hen. I have 70 hens that live outside 24/7, they have access to 40 dedicated nest boxes but only lay in 7-8 spots and 3-4 of those spots are not in nesting boxing but other places like at the base of round bales, or a horse feed bucket, or in the goats hay. Each nest will be loaded with eggs, chickens like to lay eggs in the same spot as other chickens, I've seen as many as 3 hens on 1 nest all laying eggs at once even though there are open spots all around them😂. I'd say you can get away with 1 nest per 8 chickens but 1 nest per 4 is probably better
I swear they just lay in the same spot, hoping one of the other hens decides to go broody 😂😂😂... this is also why I'm going to try a trough box system with removable separators with my 12 girls..
I found an egg yesterday in a bunch of rhubarb we have growing by the garage. They were laying on our screen porch occasionally in a pile of hay, stubborn. Never had liked nesting boxes.

I keep mine on grass. 1/2 acre, about. Have 20 in fenced area. With a large covered run for weather problems. And 6x6 hutch. 4 waters. 4 food containers. 4 boxes for medium chicken 🐔 and large wine box for bramhas
So we currently have a total of 14 hens and 1 rooster and night they have a coop of 8x8 with perching areas and nesting boxes. We want to keep getting chicken but don’t know if we can make a bigger coop. They run free in an acre and a half all day long. How many more chickens do you guys think we can get with the same cool
Hi I live in Southern California I buy my eggs from our local farmers market and I've tried looking up the farm where the eggs come from, as I want to support the farmer who truly cares about the chickens . Not much information on the care of the chicken, the farms are any where from an hour plus away from my house. Other then driving out to the farms , does any one have any suggestion on how to make sure i'm supporting farmers who truly care about raising , happy , healthy chickens.
So I’m assuming that this is a good rule of thumb for all chickens, but I was wondering if there was any differences if someone wanted to keep only 6 bantam chickens rather than full sized birds.
Think your math on the nesting boxes is off. Generally, one 1 cubic foot box per 4 birds is plenty. Two 1 cubic foot nesting boxes would be more than enough for 6 birds. They would probably all still lay in only one of the boxes.
Thank you.
